Live Cricket Blog: Gunfight at The Premadasa Corral

By Vinay Verma / Roar Guru

The R.Premadasa International Stadium is a graveyard for bowlers. In 1997-98, Sri Lanka racked up the world’s highest Test total, scoring 952 for 6 declared against India. The highest partnership in Test cricket of 576 for the second wicket was established by Jayasuriya and Mahanama.

The toss is crucial.

Since 2000, the team calling correctly has won 25 out of the 35 decided matches. Win the toss and bat first. Batting under lights has proved a bogey and tonight may be no different.

This World Cup shows that the cricketing landscape is like the Wild West and the ICC is trying to be like Wyatt Earp. Cricket administrators think you can just sink another oil well into cricket’s heart and the money will keep flowing.

The BCCI is behaving like the oil rich monarchs that give all its citizens a bonus of $3,000 to keep them compliant. Boards like Cricket Australia and the South African board are happy to share in the tripartite largesse.

The questions remain: how much of the extra revenue actually goes to the thousands of clubs that run the game for no pay?

The question of the Sheffield Shield remains a vexed potato.

The Centre of Excellence in Brisbane may not be living up to its name. Our coaches may be sending mixed signals to our young players.

Nothing happens in isolation but a lot is happening that may isolate Test and one-day cricket.

The rights for this 2011 WC were sold for two billion dollars to ESPN and it is hoped the bulk of this revenue will go to those that need it most. Countries like Afghanistan, Nepal, Ireland and Zimbabwe.

However, there must be caveats to the money and the disbursement must be subject to accountability. It would not make sense if it ended up in Mugabe’s pocket.

This World Cup is important and may go some way to restoring cricket’s credibility. Tendulkar is Indian cricket’s integrity pulse and the BCCI retains some respectability through his eminence.

Cricket in the sub-continent could do without expert comments from the likes of Mohammed Azzurudhin and Salman Butt. That these two are employed in any capacity with cricket is blight on the game.

It is inevitable that leeches will attach themselves to a World Cup that should be a celebration of all that is good in cricket. Ireland with their stirring victory over England has given meaning to the revolution and may they conquer more Goliaths.

Cricket has become elitist and is in danger of becoming irrelevant if it does not change tack. It cannot be run as a monopoly for the three or four.

It must be more inclusive and caring of those not so fortunate.

So join me at 7.30pm tonight and I look forward to discussing all of the above and sharing the game as it evolves.

It should be an interesting evening so make sure you put your party hats on and see if we cannot knock these pesky Sri Lankans off their favourite perch.

Johnson was bowling reasonably well I thought. They were playing him 'respectfully' though. Such a shame that the game was a washout, I was eagerly waiting to watch the Aussies playing the spin bowlers. It could have gotten very messy but it would have been a great test for them.

jamesb and lopati. It was just starting to get interesting and maybe Australia did dodge a bullet. I think SL will feel the same way because in clarke and Ponting Aust. have two good players of spin. In fact the best players of spin apart from P and C are Tendulkar,Gambhir,A B De Villiers and Bell. SL could be playing some of these in a quarter or semi. Krezja had a ready made pitch yesterday and apart from one over he struggled. He turns the ball but his line is wrong. He needs to study the lines Murali and harbhajan bowl. shouldn't be that hard to get the line right. Are our spinners just a little bit slow between the ears?

1:00am still raining, takes an hour and a half to take covers off, cut off point is 2:49am 99% Likely match abandoned

Leaves the game against Pakistan as a possible risk for [no loss] bragging rights. All too easy for Aus.

if the rain does stop it would take an hour or so to get the ground ready for play. That was at midnight Australia eastern time, and its still raining. 2:49am Australian time is the cut off point, if the match is abandoned or not as to allow Australia to bat 20 overs which would constitute a match. I think play will be abandoned and I get the feeling perhaps Australia has dodged a bullet. Chasing a total of 250 with 3 spinners in operation would have been a tough task for Australias middle order. So if match is abandoned Australia would have a soft start to the world cup. Easy wins against Zimbabwe, New Zealand and blockbuster matches coming up against Canada and Kenya.

sean,I was looking forward to australia chasing around 250. would have been interesting to see how they handled a three pronged spin attack. i think too much is being made of their form against Zimbabwe. it was the first match nd Price bowled well. As it was they won comfortably and then destroyed NZ. I don't think they will play as the rain is still coming down and the ground cannot recover in time.

Shame about the rain. Looks like it might have saved Sri Lanka from a humiliating defeat though :)

11.40PM Light rain is still falling and if it stops in the next half hour it could take another hour or two to start. To have a result there must be a minimum of 20 overs and the cutoff time for that is 2.30AM AEST. If that happens australia will have to score 154 in 20 overs to win. Looks more likely they will split the points .

It does look heavy and it is till raining. if it is a draw and they split points then Australia will want to beat pakistan to finish top of the group. Unless Pakistan lose to NZ. It is pobable.

Just heard on the Sky commentary, it would be a draw, 1 point each.

Thanks - if match abandoned do they replay or award a draw. If abandoned no change to the RR?

lopati Colombo will get a shower but it may be passing. I believe it is Duckworth Lewis. Will check it thru the evening. SL is starting to get on top of Krezja here and this partnership is threatening. SL 3 for 146 in the 33rd and RR is 4.45. I think Ponting will be turning to Johnson or Tait as soon as the 34th over is done. the harder ball will help. As we speak the rain comes down

I hope those clouds aren't bringing any rain. Hate to see a duckworth-lewis revised target, either rain should stay away or the match abandoned. btw, wht's the world cup rule here, re-schedule or draw?
