Socceroos put Durban nightmare right

By Davidde Corran / Roar Guru

289 days. That’s how long Australian football had to live with the ghosts of Durban where the Socceroos so meekly capitulated to Germany in their opening game.

Davidde rates our Socceroos with player ratings from the game – and watch the goals

It took marginally less then that for Australia to turn the game on its head after Mario Gomez put the hosts in front after 26 minutes.

First came David Carney, who had endured a torrid time all night up against Andre Schurrle, to equalise for the Socceroos.

Then there was Harry Kewell. The player who always seems to stand tall when Australia needs him, drew a foul from Christian Trasch in the German penalty area.

Luke Wilkshire converted from the spot and put the Socceroos ahead 2-1.

Two goals in three minutes brought a win to go along side some of the country’s best.

Critics will point to Australia’s dire first half where they failed to find their rhythm as they attempted to force themselves onto the game.

But those two goals, which came against the run of play, changed everything.

All of a sudden the Socceroos looked inspired and lifted their intensity.

This morning proved Australia is still a flawed team but one capable of the remarkable. Even more importantly this win is the perfect launching pad for greater things.

The key to the win for the Socceroos: there was more to this international break then simply an international friendly though.

Australia’s Asian Cup campaign is now behind it and attention has turned towards World Cup qualifying which beings in September.

It was appropriate then that the Socceroos took their first step towards 2014 in Brazil against the team who effectively killed off Australia’s World Cup chances last year.

Now with the mistakes of Durban corrected and a raft of promising youngsters starting to emerge, Australia can look forward to its next World Cup qualifying campaign with bright eyes.

Socceroos player ratings:

Mark Schwarzer 7
David Carney 5.5
Lucas Neill 7.5
Sasa Ognenovski 7
Luke Wilkshire 6.5
Matt McKay 7
Carl Valeri 7
Mile Jedinak 6
Brett Emerton 6
Brett Holman 8
Harry Kewell 6.5

I've got to put this question out there, why do we play better in Europe than we do in Asia a more technically fluent team in Europe has anybody thought of that.

Fussball. No game has taken place in relation to England vs Germany recently, not since the World Cup. Everybody would have known about it i would have watched it.You're right.

Josh. Unusual statement you didn't get to see the match but you want a rundown of how strong the German team was ok,Tim Weise replaced Manuel Nuer in goal, Weise keeps for Werder Bremen recently knocked out if the Champs Lge, Phillip Lahm, Khedria,Ozil rested Badstuber don't know, but Podolski, Schweinsteiger, Fredrich and Gomez where playing thier's your spine of the team, and they rushed Klose on late, in my opinion a very strong team as the Germans always are. I hope that helps Josh.

I enjoy you're read's Davidde, I looked at the Headline ,Socceroo's put Durban Nightmare right. I look at things a liitle differently i remember respected English Football Pundit's John Motson and Martin Tyler when Germany tore the English apart in Sth Africa, Quotes at the time by both men where kidding ourselves if we believe'd we where in the match regardless of Lampards goal that wasn't result 4-1, then the German's faced a cocky little team called Argentina, Germany completely outclassed the Argentine's result 4-0 ( ring a bell ). My point being is that how where rating ourselves against nowadays the Argentine's and to a lesser extent England, if we got beat 4-0 in Durban then surely the Argentine's have to execrise some demon's then. Have we become a World Footballing powerhouse in the space of 8 years (PLEASE). It was a great win for the Socceroos and for Australin Football in Monchengladbach and despite the ignorance of the non footballing media it wasn't an under strength German side at all.

I hope the FFA remember that the Socceroos belong to all of Australia, not just those who reside on the Eastern seaboard.. there was a rumour the Serbia game would be at Adelaide Oval....I would love that. Being a SAlian, being able to see the Socceroos without having to fly to Sydney first will be almost a new experience for me:)

One player was being physically contacted, the other wasn't. The first was awarded a penalty, the latter a yellow card. This is hardly as it should be.

art, i'm not sure he even gets much of a run in japan. the last time i looked he was on the bench. rf, i thought about it but as the moderators only let through about a quarter of what i write i think i would just be wasteing my time. da silva, at least devere actually plays. tristan, is davidde french? rf, there is a certain amount of controversy as to whether dark matter exists. i'd like to believe that verbeek never happened. tristan, from my recollection its one or the other, wave or particle, if spiranovic could be both i'd back us in to win the next world cup.

Harry,Messi nobody can do a Klinsmann. Jurgen would have done a triple somersault from that position & ended up in the stand.

The confluence of physics and football is intriguing, floppy. Can I suggest you consider a full article on the subject? Harry Kewell as a decaying nucleus? Pim Verbeek as a black hole?

i thought harry was paying the utmost respect to time honoured german traditions. was really a form of flattery to "do a klinnsman". and to beat a german team with a penalty shld be savoured - it doesnt happen often.

Isn't that the way it is with every country or every team? As far as SAF is concerned ManU players never dive and cheat; only the opponents do such things. Ask Wenger and he'll say the same about his Arsenal team. In relation to the incident that led to H's penalty ... well, the ref was 2 metres away, at ground level, so I reckon he would have a fair idea whether it was a foul or not a foul. And, I thought the ref was excellent all night.

I see there is no discussion of Harry's dive...is it only cheating when it happens to us
