Super Rugby '11: crowds on the up

By kovana / Roar Pro

So now we have come to the end of the 2011 Super rugby season and I think it’s time to have a look back at the crowds for this season.

Keep in mind that it will be hard to compare this season with previous seasons.

This is due to the fact we have an extra team, different conference match set ups, each team doesnt play every other team and also the extra playoff matches in the Finals

I must thank the Chiefs, Blues, Lions, Bulls and Cheetahs Admin staff who all helped in compiling the final crowd totals.

Note: I also disregarded the round 2 match between the hurricanes and Crusaders as it was cancelled.

At the end of the Super Rugby 2011 Pool Rounds.

Total Crowds = 2,405,002
Total matches = 119
Average = 20,210

At end of Playoffs and finals:

Total Crowds = 2,577,711 (an increase of 40.3%!)
Total Matches = 124

Average = 20,788

Also a short list of Crowd Averages for each team.

Blues – 17,301
Saders – 15,010
Canes – 10,143
Chiefs – 7,766
Hlands – 9,413

Waratah – 20,493
Brumbies – 13,110
Force – 16,201
Rebels – 17,141
Reds – 33,600

Lions – 22,351
Stormer – 41,850
Bulls – 32,105
Sharks – 29,140
Cheetah – 20,187

Fellas, I wrote an article outlining what IMO is the best way forward for SANZAR and Pacific rugby. It solves many of the issues highlighted above, and I can see it keeping NZ, SA, Aus, Japan/Agrys plus possibly the pacific islands involved and happy. http://www.theroar.com.au/2011/07/17/the-solution-to-the-sanzar-and-pacific-rugby-puzzle/

Hey Kovana - enjoyed the article as always. I was going to do something similar but was let down for lack of match crowd stats for the following games. Dont suppose you could be a gent a provide them? Naturally I wll credit accordingly. As short of phoning the unions themselves I havent been able to get any further info and so I know how hard it is Cheetahs 1 20 25 4 SA Lions Chiefs 1 13 16 4 NZ Blues Cheetahs 2 47 50 5 NZ Canes Cheetahs 5 47 36 0 OZ Brumbies Canes 1 11 17 4 NZ Blues Chiefs 4 20 7 0 NZ Highlanders Sharks 5 34 16 0 OZ Brumbies Chiefs 4 30 23 1 SA Stormers Bulls 5 47 10 0 OZ Rebels Cheetahs 4 33 20 0 NZ Saders Cheetahs 5 41 21 0 OZ Rebels Bulls 5 32 21 0 SA Cheetahs Bulls 4 23 17 1 OZ Tahs Cheetahs 1 18 23 4 SA Sharks Chiefs 2 18 18 2 NZ Canes Chiefs 0 11 19 4 OZ Reds Cheetahs 1 34 44 5 SA Stormers and awesome win against the Wallabies last night - look forward to seeing the Boks and Samoa do battle in the RWC

Why would you kiwis want to break up the strongest provincial competition in the world, so you could play tiddlywinks on suburban grounds in NZ? Rugby is an international game and, from an Australian perspective where we deal with competition from AFL and League, it is what makes union great and sets it apart! If Melbourne isnt sick of AFL, why is NZ tired of rugby? Strange...

At a 40 dollar ticket, a star player needs to sell 25,000 seats to make 1 million a season (simplified I know). That is 1300 people per match. This doesn't include sponsorship dollars for the club and TV rights for the comp when one of the best players in the world is playing for you. Just saying, that losing a star player for the entire club season would not save millions of dollars per season. SR should not capitulate to Europe - It is the best comp in the world, let's try to keep it that way.

I trust your tongue was firmly planted in your cheek as you typed this Emric. Sport is about competition and international sport (including S15) is about international competition. If NZ want to be the big fish in a little pond so be it, but if Rugby is to survive, let alone prosper, it needs to be both international and competitive.

Certainly WA is not a Rugby state, but it has rapidly growing grade and junior comps.

Johnno It wouldn't surprise me in the least if over time new conferences in both North and South America are introduced as well as possibly an Asian conference. You'll have your SH Champions League just not the way you think it should happen and thank god for that.

You could hardly recognise the venue watching it as a day game on the TV. I think I have only seen the Waikato Stadium full for one Chiefs game. The rest have been near empty even derby games

The stadium with the Speedway track is FMG stadium in Manawatu. Just watched them take on Hawkes Bay in the ITM. Not a bad game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena_Manawatu

My opinion is anything could happen after 2015 when the sanzar tv DEAL ENDS at end of 2015 season.
