Nicky Carle needs support at Sydney FC

By Rodimus / Roar Rookie

Nicky Carle – the man is an enigma on the football pitch. He can do wonders for a club team. But he’s never been able to transfer it to the national team.

I’m not fussed really. Some players are like that. My concern is that he leads Sydney FC to glory this season.

Sydney FC were lacking quality while he was injured last season. As the new season approaches, Carle can hit the ground running. He can lead from the front, orchestrating fine passing moves and goalscoring moments.

The thing with FC is, they don’t have a few more qualities like Carle. No one who can support him or take the burden from him for a moment.

That’s where FC will struggle this season. For a successful FC season, there will need to be at least two players (preferably a striker and another midfielder, a certain Harry Kewell perhaps?) to help Carle.

Sydney need to be successful this season. The team need to lift their performances and need to dominate the opposition. They need to help Carle and lift themselves to his level.

It’s the only way they’ll have a chance at winning silverware this season.

great comments griffo. That is all Carle ever needed. Was full support from a national coach. Holman got it through 3 years of embarrassingly awful play from him then he finally came good. Imagine how good kicky would have been if he had of had the support he deserved.

"Nicky Carle – the man is an enigma on the football pitch. He can do wonders for a club team. But he’s never been able to transfer it to the national team." He's never had the chance!!!!! Every chance he's had is with like 20 minutes to go, and they expect him to pull somehting amazing out of the bag. The only game he's ever started for the socceroos was against South Africa in London and he was man-of-the-match. Since then he's never gotten another chance. It's a disgrace

Thanks for the comments. IMO, Antonis isn't ready yet physically for a starting place. He needs to muscle up a bit I think. Mikela is a good striker, better than Cazarine. Not so sure if Kisel can deliver the goods now that he is well into his 30s but I could be wrong. Petratos is the one to watch at Sydney this season. Hopefully he can build on his impressive beginnings at the tail end of last season. On another note, I think Kofi Danning was underutilised severly since his return from knee reconstruction (although in saying so how you hold up after returning from a major surgery depends on your mental state). He has the talent to play at this level but I don't think Lavicka knew where to play him. I think he'll flourish at Brisbane Roar this season.

Holman wasn't maligned for no reason - early 2010WC qualifying he had poor first touch and drifed in and out of games. He was inconsistent but had Pim's unwavering support which gives you the confidence to keep trying and improving - which he did near the end of qualifying and hasn't looked back since the World Cup. Carle needed a national coach to have that same level of support a few years ago but didn't. Went abroad to prove himself and seemed to make bad club choices and stubbornly nut it out under Warnock, all of which didn't help Carle at all. Injury didn't help Carle last year and like Stu Maisilik I don't think Lavicka's system of play will help Carle greatly this year. Stay injury free and then lift his game a bit, Carle will help SFC but ultimately Carle will need to look at another HAL club end of season - Roar, Jets or AUFC at least.

Agree 100% with agga78. Sydney are my pick for the spoon this season. The playing list at every other club is stronger in every department, and Lavicka is a dull donkey of a coach. Watching Sydney play last year was like eating wet cardboard for breakfast. The only hope for this season is that Petratos and Antonis step up and make a difference. Let's be honest - any team that starts a player as limited as McFlynn is in trouble from the moment the ball is kicked. And Carle - well, in this team he's wasted. I pity the Sydney fans. I doubt Lavicka will last the season. We urgently need a strong Sydney team. How they appointed Lavicka again is beyond belief. I can't see any hope for the club while he is in charge. And don't quote the double at me - that was a season marked by poor quality football. They were dull as ditchwater then too and won by being the best of a very bad bunch.

"NC is a show-pony that can't sustain a performance over the long run" There, I've got that off my chest. If he was any good he'd have made it into a quality team by now. Coaches don't rate him highly, only SFC do.

I think if all the players step up and play well Sydney will have a great year and can make the finals but they also have a chance to have a very poor year.

Carle will need to be the Johnny Warren medalist to get this rabble of a Sydney squad into the finals, it is clearly the worst Sydney squad in 6 years, full of disgarded A league players like Jamie lol Coyne, Reddy, Beauchamp, Jamieson, Ryall or very average players like McFlynn and Morisyiou. Look around the league Adelaide have brought in quality all over the park, Perth has recruited well, Heart look really potent up front now, Victory have 3 excellent signings so far (need a defender(s) Brisbane will still be very strong, CCM as well, The Jets are decent aswell, leaving Sydney and Wellington as the worst squads in the league,. Sydney need a Postacoglu type to come in and clear out the entire squad and start again, we need Sydney to be strong, play a exciting brand of football, bring in the bling back, if Adelaide can sign 4-5 quality players Sydney should be able too bring in double that.

Nicky will always be the player who said that when he came back from Europe, that Newcastle would be the first club that would get the opportunity to sign him. He was loved by fans in Newcastle and he let us down when he signed for Sydney. For that, I hope he has a miserable year. Judas!

Not a Carle fan. Far too inconsistent for mine. Flashes of brilliance from time to time - but he makes Carlos Hernandez look consistent. Great potential - little delivery.

I am struggling for other names to give them, Keat! Sky Blues makes them sound too much like Coventry, for me. Other suggestions welcome.

Mid, I wonder how many of us would have included Holman like you have if we were asked to choose before the world cup.

At those who call Sydney by the name "FC". You are aware that every A-League club is a "FC". By dropping the word Sydney and only use "FC" you have giving Sydney a worse nickname then that of the likes of "Roar", "Glory", "Victory" etc.

Nick Carle the player who invented the word "Polarisation". For me the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Nicky is a tasty sauce put on top of the pudding. Once youve licked it off pretty ordinary pudding underneath.

Agree with Fuss. Nicky is just a great player to watch. At Newcastle in 06/07 he was mesmerising, and even last season at times he showed some glimpses of great football. As Titus says, the big fillup for Sydney this season is the return of Kisel. He is capable of making everyone around him play better. However, the most important squad member for FC this season may well be their captain, Terry McFlynn. With Musialak gone they will rely on him a lot to win possession and break up the opposition midfield. I'd imagine Moriyasu will play alongside him. They've recruited experienced defenders in Coyne and Beauchamp. They've also recruited a defender straight out of the Eredivisie, which is impressive. All in all you'd think Sydney fans would be cautiously optimistic about the new season, but a lot will depend on how well the defensive players work together.

Nicky, will have a big year this year, if he remains free from injury.... he is a class above most in the A-League... Whether he has ever been good enough to replace Timmy, Harry & Bret in the midfield is a mute point ... me thinks not ...
