Memo Broncos fans: Lockyer is just another footballer

For a very large percentage of rugby league supporters living here in Queensland, Friday night football is largely a pain in the you know what.

Just using my circle of friends and work colleagues and associates as a guide, I would have to say that only about 10 per cent of league fans in this part of the country actually support the Broncos.

That’s why, when we have to put up with them being shoved down our throats at 7:30pm Friday night, 18 times a season as we do, then I believe we have the right to be a little miffed to hear that the Broncos supporters are up in arms because their last game of the season will be on a Friday night.

They want the game against Manly, the last of the regular season, moved to the Sunday afternoon. Why is this so? They’ve laughed at the rest of the comp all year because their game each week is shown in the prime-time spot.

Why the sudden change of heart now?

It’s Darren Lockyer’s last home game before he retires and the Broncos faithful believes that merits a change to Channel 9’s scheduling.

“It’s Darren’s last game” (boo hoo).

“He deserves to get a big send off from a Sunday afternoon crowd” (whinge whinge).

“Channel 9 and the NRL should listen to what the fans want” (whine whine).

“Oh, the humanity!” (nah just kidding. Just thought I’d throw that one in).

And so on and so on and so on.

Well I’ve got a message for the Broncos supporters from the rest of the rugby league world: suck it up, cupcakes.

We, the rest of the rugby league world, don’t care. We’ve had to endure your constant whinging and whining for 23 years now.

In true ‘we’re always hard done by’ Queensland fashion, the Broncos have found yet another reason to cry foul and unroll the ‘why us?’ flag.

Hard done by? Geesh! If anything, they shouldn’t be complaining about the NRL, they should be grovelling at its feet.

In 1988 after they came into the comp, they were given a guarantee that Brisbane would remain a one-team city for five years.

But with the exception of three failed years from the Crushers, they still have single-club status in a city of more than two million people.

That alone should be enough for them, it would be for most clubs. But is it? No, they still want more!

Now they want the game’s biggest sponsor to kowtow to their wishes and move its biggest-rating game of the weekend to another timeslot because one of the Broncos players is retiring.

Well, I’m sorry to have to tell you this Broncos but Darren Lockyer is just another footballer, and just like the hundred thousand-odd others who have played the game before him he is not bigger than the game itself.

As great a footballer as he is and was, and I’ll grant you he’s probably in the top ten, he’s still not a god. All your petitions and rantings and ravings in the Courier Mail are not going to change Channel 9’s stance on this one.

Ratings equals advertising revenue and advertising revenue means more cash that can be spent sponsoring the game. Which pleases the rest of us no end as well because it means more money for every club.

You see, it’s not always just about the Broncos!

Broncos are amazing. 6 premiershis mate. And Lockeyer is a genius. You hear it every week because it;s true. You will never be half the player and man Lockeyer is.

I'm not questioning the quality of the footballers, just the player payments, crowds, ground amenities, training facilities etc. Compare the two GF crowds that year and the players payments. THat's why so many Qlders headed south and who can blame them. My argument is the hypocrisy of taking the Sydney clubs' money and then turning on them. It's kind of like rapping someone and then blame the victim.

I just had a look at the profiles for Bob Linder and Mal Mengina. The page for the 1984 series said they played for the Western Suburbs Magpies, so I assumed they must have headed south for that season. After thinking about it again I decided to have a look at their profiles because II could have sworn they played in the BRL. Good thing I did! They both played for the Southern Suburbs Magpies in the BRL in 1984. So that's 14 players from the BRL and 4 from the NSWRFL in the 1984 Queensland team.

"If it wasn’t for the NSWRL then great players such as Big Artie, Kevin Yow Yea et al would have run around in a competition which could be considered no better than “park football” for all their football careers" The 1984 QLD origin team had 12 players from the BRL and 6 from the NSWRL. Two-thirds of the players were contracted with BRL clubs. Ended up winning the series 2-1. If the BRL was a park football competition then what does that make the NSWRL? How could NSW lose to a Queensland team that selected two-thirds of its players from a "park football" competition? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_State_of_Origin_series#Queensland

"record crowd was just less than 20 000 in " You got that from Wikipedia, didn't ya? I've seen footage of BRL grand finals from the 1980's. Seen them on the ABC during the halftime break for the Queensland Cup match of the round and on Youtube. Lang Park looks like it was sold out for every grand final that I've seen. 33210 attended the origin match at Lang Park in 1980. If the BRL grand finals that were played during the 80's were sold out then that makes a mockery of your figure.

Thank u Ian. As much as I respect what Qgirl says, lets be honest here. If it wasn't for the NSWRL then great players such as Big Artie, Kevin Yow Yea et al would have run around in a competition which could be considered no better than "park football" for all their football careers. It was OK for them to go to Sydney clubs and take the cash, then go back home and "bag" them. Classic example...... Trevor Gillmeister. WHAT A GRUB! He took Easts and Penrith's money then dumps on both clubs because they're not from Queensland.......... Hey!... While I'm at it, how about Meninga, Belcher, Jackson, Boustead, Shearer, Vautin, Walters and the rest......? FFS. .......... GLASS HOUSES Queenslanders......... at least Cameron Smith and Billy Slater have gone to a club that ISN'T in NSW....... And of course there's always Greg Inglis........ OH YEAH, that's right..... he's a New South Welshman...... You lot in Qld just somehow seemed to brainwash him. I'm so proud I'm a New South Welshman. We may not have won SOO over the last 6 years but at least I can live with myself.... Then again, Queenslanders can also, because they don't have a conscious

Brisbane had a much smaller population in the 1960's. There weren't as many Queenslanders leaving the BRL for the NSWRFL during the 60's and 70's as there were during the 80's. Crowds for the BRL were good until 1988. The year the Broncos entered the NSWRFL.

Qgirl, you can lie to the caucus and you can lie to the press, but never ever ever lie to yourself. Arthur Beetson, who I hope you'll agree was a pretty good Queensland league player, moved from Redcliffe in the BRL to Balmain in 1965. It wasnt the 1980s, the horse left a long, long time before that. Bluntly, the BRL always was a second rate competition. Its record crowd was just less than 20 000 in the 1961 grand final between Northern Suburbs and Fortitude Valley. In that year 1961in Sydney , there was a crowd of call it 21 000 for the final between Manly-Warringah and Balmain. This was the lowest-attended final in the series, with crowds of 41 000, 48 000 and a Grand Final crowd of 61 000. When your grand final has a third as many paying punters come through the gate, your good players will always leave for a payday in another competition.

Sorry Boydy, but I have no sympathy for NSW rugby league supporters. They're getting what they deserved for allowing the snakey NSWRFL to use the differing laws in QLD and NSW during the 1980's to send the BRL out of business. The BRL couldn't compete with the NSRFL during the 80's because the Leagues clubs in QLD were prohibited from collecting revenue through gambling. The NSWRFL clubs could collect revenue from gambling. The extra revenue that the NSWRFL clubs acquired through gambling allowed the NSWRFL to poach the best players from the BRL. The NSWRFL then put the final nail in the coffin by introducing the Broncos. So, as far as I see it, the teams from the old NSWRFL are getting what they deserve for playing with the devil. If they had have played fair and NOT exploited the polarised laws in QLD and NSW then there would be no Broncos for them to worry about. Serves them right for being malevolent and greedy.

I take it all back....... It IS all about the Broncos..... Each of you who accused me of unprofessional Bronco bashing should now feel quiet embarrassed. I was right wasn't I? And a classic example of the Broncos always getting their own way is the following: The Wests Tigers V Dragons game this weekend was originally planned by Wests to be played this Sunday afternoon. As this game was to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the famous St George - Wests 1961 Grand Final Wests booked the Sydney Cricket Ground. Preparations were made, over a 1,000 school children assembled for a big pre-game and half-time celebrations and a motorcade honouring some of the greatest names in rugby league history, Peter Dimond, Keith Holman, Arthur Summons, Kel O'Shea, Noel Kelly, Eddie Lumsden, Reg Gasnier, Johnny King, Brian Clay,Johnny Raper, Norm Provan, & Kevin Ryan. What an afternoon this was to be. But was it? NO. Ch9 steps in and says to the league, "We want this game played on the Friday night" The NRL (staunch as always, NOT!), backs down and accepts 9's "request" (read, DEMAND), leaving the game and all it's history & tradition looking very forlorn, as usual. But one bloke and a team whose been around for less than a quarter of a century can achieve what one of the original rugby league clubs and the most successful and famous cannot just beggars belief. Everyone associated with making both of these decisions should be ashamed of themselves. Let's face it, if Channel 9 wasn't a Platinum Sponsor of the Broncos would they be risking the lost advertising revenue that goes with playing this game in front of a modest average Sunday afternoon audience of 180k viewers as apposed to their regular 360K Friday night average. In fact there's every chance that that figure may even be down on usual numbers as that particular Sunday is also Father's Day. I know the Bronco supporters will have reasons why the inconsistencies but the reality is, I was wrong. Lockyer IS obviously the only footballer ever who is bigger than the game and it IS always all about the Broncos!

hmm mabye but not the bombers, since they're looking like broncos 2 electric boogaloo (run by arrogant business men who think they're bigger then the nrl), and since the team has no real history. would rather see the reserection of one of the old brisbane premiorship clubs or bringing one of the queensland cup sides into top grade (my preference is souths-logan taps into logan ipswich corador and would get support from western subburbs supporters).

"It will be a cowboy warriors grand final this year, you probably cant see that also." I"m a Cowboys fan, so I hope so. The battle of the two sides who entered in 1995. Would be even better if it was Cowboys vs Broncos, with the Cowboys giving them a hiding! "Lose some weight porky. Your guts is all over my big screen." ROTFLMAO! "i have no idea what that above comment was about…can someone help me???" Who cares? It's funny and that's all that matters!

"What the people of this lovely city seriously need is a second team to cheers for." I was born and bred in Brisbane, and I agree entirely with your statement. Another team in Brisbane will poach juniors away from the Broncos, but it will help them off the field.
