Samoans scare Boks in Auckland at RWC

By Jim Morton / Roar Guru

Samoa has shaken, stirred and exposed chinks in South Africa’s armour but the Springboks still emerged unbeaten from the World Cup’s pool of death on Friday night.

A hard-fought 13-5 victory at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium locked up top spot – and a likely quarter-final against the Wallabies – for South Africa.

The Springboks survived a second-half Samoan onslaught by repelling the relentless Polynesians who dominated play after trailing 13-0 at half-time.

Barring Fiji springing a 40-point upset of Wales on Sunday, the result means Samoa must pack their bags but they will know they scared the life out of the defending champions.

The highly-physical Samoans succeeded in finding defensive weakness in the Springboks midfield armour, doing Australia a favour ahead of the probable cut-throat heavyweight clash in Wellington on Sunday week.

South Africa controlled the match in the first half but they lost try-scoring winger Bryan Habana (thigh) and all their tournament momentum after the break.

Samoan No.8 George Stowers burrowed over after a slick backline scrum move in the 50th minute, and then the underdogs continued to pressure and pierce the Boks defensive line.

They were missing tackles, losing bread-and-butter lineouts and when the pressure was applied sharpshooter Morne Steyn muffed his first goal kick in 14 attempts.

Meanwhile, inside centre Eliota Fuimaono Sapolu was making a mockery of the Boks midfield defence.

Samoa’s best chance came with 12 minutes to go but electric winger David Lemi, starting his first match of the tournament, was brought down with a brilliant try-saver by young fullback Pat Lambie.

The possible upset was virtually killed off 60 seconds later when fullback Paul Williams was controversially sent off for a scuffle and push on Heinrich Brussow.

The drama continued when Boks captain John Smit, who had just come off the bench, was yellow-carded for a professional foul in his record-equalling World Cup appearance.

“It was very tough,” said stand-in skipper Victor Matfield.

“The first half we played all right but in the second half we went to sleep and the Samoans came out with a lot of heart.”

Only an Italy upset over Ireland on Sunday will allow the Wallabies, who play Russia on Saturday, to top pool C and avoid South Africa in the quarter-finals.

It won’t just be the Australians barracking for Italy with Boks flanker Schalk Burger admitting he was hoping to avoid the Wallabies.

“We’ll be rooting for the Italians to beat Ireland,” Burger said.

“But, either way, we have come through a tough pool, which has us well prepared.”

Australia, the Tri-Nations champions, do have the wood over the Springboks in the past two seasons with five wins from their last six encounters.

South Africa coach Peter de Villiers described the difficult North Harbour clash a perfect warm-up for the knockout stages.

“It was a great preparation for us, it’s just great to come through it,” de Villiers said.

Totally agree. I said it at the last WC. Their game against England was a joke. Every 50/50 went England's way. This time round, its no better.

I agree with your point Tim but it kinda losses its shine when you confused 'Minnows' with 'Minor'. Pim called it correctly on the spelling of 'Minnows'..

Angus talk about a lack of respect for samoa and pacific island teams . I think you like the iRB and the UK rugby union teams. i can't wait over the next 25 years when the big nations of the world USA, and Russia get better, and canada, brazil Argenina, the pacific islands nations they will not have to take any nonsense form the IRB. With US media moguls and the amount of money USA ,,russia, have and china they are developing, they will be able to form there own breakaway rugby administration like super league , and the media networks which run all sports, the us media networks eg Newscorp, ted turner, NBC will not take any nonsense form the IRB about issues like scheduling, and they will help the pacific islands team and give them a fair go. i think Angus you are happy with how the iRB have ran and officiated this world cup and you are a fan of UKL rugby teams(england, wales, irleand) Shame on you for liking the IRB and these backwards northern hemphisphere unions, and not supporting the pacific island teams, the players who are genitally the most superior for contacts sports(just look how many american samoans are in the NFL per head of population). And look at the contributions to the Australia and all blacks rugby teams stacked with players of Polynesain genetics. Show some respect to such talented human race only i wish they had even larger population. Look at how much talent they are now contributing to rugby league the pacific islanders Angus. There for they deserve more bargaining power at the IRB boardroom starting with fair scheduling at world cups Angus.

I never said he had no right to question I question his attitude after he got his reply. A classic remark by Owens tells you how he felt about Schwalger was ‘ I won't make a good hooker and you won't make a good Ref’. It is not the right thing for a ref to say but if Schwalger could not see that the ref was not taking a shine to his attitude then he is not a competent captain. Look at his reaction to the double movement against the Welsh, again he showed distain for authority and he got it wrong. Oh and just one more thing, I know more about rugby than you think, I respect the game of Rugby and the players that continue to play it with respect. It not just a career for the player but it’s a Culture and respecting referees is part of that culture. I have played the game and have followed it and read Rugby Law book a few times and am aware of the most of the laws and the various interpretations. I try keep up with Law changes. I sometimes hate referees more than most people but I respect that they have a role to play in the game. Maybe Schwalger and you should try do the same.

PIM first of all you can't spell MINOR, You dont know the difference between a SOLID PUNCH and a OPEN HAND PUSH seeing it was replayed over and over again... its a wonder why your blind eyes couldnt even see him faking it (dive) If it wasnt for the polynesian players in the RWC, it would be boring to watch and less entertaining!! Go follow netball cause you'll get to see what you call a SOLID PUNCH in almost every game!! BTW, if Paul Williams would have hit him with a Samoan Punch, he would have met his maker!

I'm thinking you probably know nothing about rugby let alone even played the game. A captain has every right to question the referee during the game in regards to the calls he's made exspecially when there 50/50 calls. In this case the Samoans were hard done by the poor refering by Nigel Owens who were for not the help of assistant referee's, every call he made would of gone to the South African side. And for captain Schwalger to put up with this for 80minutes in my books he's the best Captain in the RWC2011 mate.

Pim talk about a biased European centric based comment. You have no issues with the unfair draw that helps the strong european teams, and south afirca and australia which as a lot of european players descent. You have no issues with the unfair draws that helps the euro nations (england, scotland, wales), and unfairly oges against teams like samoa and tonga, who do not get as much tv ratings pim coz they have smaller populations. How can the rugby world cup be deemed a fair scheduled sports tournament. I think you like the iRB and because you like the iRB policies you should be ashamed of yourself for being a fan of the IRB. I bet you pim you like FIFA as well.

I am amazed at all the "poor little Samoans" bit. It is good to support minnows but if minnows choose to play the man and not the ball they must suffer the consequences. Love the one comment that Brussow took a 'soccer dive' I suppose Williams holding Brussow by his balls and not letteing go & then to crown it all giving him a solid punch in the face because Brussow dared to push him.Anyway thank heaven the Samoans are going home- what a bunch of ill disciplined players.Maybe when they start playing rugby (like the Tongans today) they deserve to be there

Gerhard as well south africa had so much luck. burgers miracle tackle was just the laws of physics could of gone either way if the samoan body movement turned. Also the paul williams sending off was a soccer dive from Henirch brussow. The double movement call. out africa like the lions series have had so much luck. The welsh beat them but for the stupid touch judges who could not seek the goal went over.

Samoa had all the pressure this match i would back Samoa if the situation was equal. Samoa had more days rest Samoa had to deny south africa bonus point in other words win by 8 and not concede 4 trues South africa did not have to deal with that mental burden they imply had to just turn up and win or lose. Welsh referee for match like this massive conflict of interest Ref far to hard on Samoa at set pieces. That double movement was appalling decision Paul Williams should not of been sent off Henrich Brussow soccer dived Samoa has been cheapened and duded by the iRB draw especially Wales match 4 days as opposed to 7 days for wales simply because wales has a big population and draws in bigger tv ratings. It makes the world cup lose credibility and legitimacy as teamster not on even schedules unlike the FIFA world cup, and this is FIFA we are talking about not the most morally good group in the World and even they can have a fair draw. Maybe the IRB are worse than FIFA. And the IRB voting system is so stacked with northern hemphisephere uk unions having more votes than say samoa or tonga or fiji it is a joke or argentina or italy. So much for democracy. Frans Steyn out of World cup great news for wallabies and all teams. He is a massive loss almost as bad as NZ losing Dan Carter. Great goalkicking range, great tactical kicking, big storng, good passer, big mathc player big loss for South Africa.

why was a Welshman reffing a game in which the Welsh had so much at stake? What were the tournament organisers thinking?

So what do you expect him to do? Stand by and smile as the IRB and it's officials doctor the World cup to suit the broadcasters and the sponsers bank balances??. Good on him for showing his disgust at least now it has been brought out into the open for discussion instead of everything along with the smaller nations being swept under the rug. This tournament is becoming farcical and it's the smaller nations standing up for themselves and speaking out that will hopefully eventually lead to change. There is no doubt whatsoever that the bigger more powerfull nations get the rub of the green in every situation, if you disagree then you obviously dont watch rugby with two eyes open. Im an All Blacks supporter and even i get annoyed when i see our team getting all the fifty fifty calls when we play minnow nations.

Cross-cultural misunderstanding of facial gestures, Angus. Check out the books on it. When Samoans first came to NZ in numbers there were problems until there was some cultural education about non-verbal cues etc. Perhaps that is an excuse for the ref. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Frans Steyn is a big loss for the Boks. They're got more than adequate cover in JdV, but Steyn was playing well in this tournament. Ah well, no more 60m penalties. We can all sigh a breath of relief.
