A-League All Stars game is a great idea

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

Lyall Gorman is currently kite-flying an A-League All Stars match as a season opener. One of the reasons this is a winning idea is the advantage football has over the AFL and NRL is an overseas player base.

Give or take a few, Australia currently has about 200 players overseas. We also have 43 from overseas playing in the A-League, not counting Kiwis players. Currently each club can have five overseas players.

Lyall wants to start the season with a starting match that is the signal that the season starts the week after.

His idea at this stage, is that the best overseas players playing in the A-League will take on the A-League’s best in a match. The match will be played in a centre that does not have an A-League team i.e. Canberra, Coffs Harbour or some other such venue.

He sees it as a ratings winner, the A-League Socceroos versus the A-League’s best overseas talent.

Lyall further argues it would give the Australia coach a good look at many fringe Socceroos. He believes that both the A-League coach and the All Stars coach should be coaching in the A-League.

The marketing is clever as it would highlight how much talent there is in the league and maybe some of the Euro snobs will watch.

Who would not go to see Kewell and Emerton versus Broich and Hernandez?

Wow, it would also highlight the best players in the league for fans and supporters.

I like the idea as it has an enormous appeal from every angle I can think of. Clubs, the players union and the players would need to agree.

The thought of a season-ending injury would weigh heavily on the minds of club administrators.

However, the water cooler talk about who should the coaches be, who should play in the game, and where to play it would be excellent for the game and provide some media during the AFLand NRL final series.

I hope this match does take place and the clubs and players can agree that this is a brilliant idea.

Anyone know if SFC had a membership stand out the front of the ground? Seemed a great opportunity to get some extra fans on board

Fussball friend. Why stop there? Man.Utd 1968 European cup champions team Best,Law,Charlton et al sell out games all around Australia. 37,000 at Brisbane Exhibition ground Utd winning 7-0 against Qld and a little side tale. After the game Qld left back gave up the game stating the game he played was light years away from the game Best played. Johnny Snaith was true to his word, he never played again. Your article was well put,get the opposition plus our best team and the grounds will fill. jb

Wow fuss great stories and memories, loved the facts like the start telling which goal end etc very good . Your father a football tragic to like yourself a football tragic. The late great Johnny Warren would be proud of you Fuss. Did you by the way see any of the olyroos matches in 91 i think when a young kevin muscat coached the Olyroos , and did you get a chance to go to any of the olympic games matches at the MCG in 2000 when Viduka form memory captained the team. They played tally at the MCG and lost i think 1-0 or it was a 0-0 draw..The hillsbrough tragedy if that was today with live tv and the internet everyone would hear about it in 5 minutes. . Isreal i think have played in three confederations because of the obvious issues of political problems.

@ Johnno Nice to know you've actually attended a LIVE football match! I have been to every WCQ played in Melbourne since August 1977, when I attended my first National Team match - a 0-1 loss to Iran at Olympic Park and Dave Harding missed a penalty at the south end goals. So, Iran were the opponent when I first fell in love with the NT and yes, the same opponent would torment me 20 years later across the railway tracks, at the MCG. I've been to a few WCQs in Sydney. One infamous w/e a mate and I left Melbourne at midnight on Friday and drove the 10 hours non-stop up the Hume to Sydney to watch us play Israel in 1989 on the Sunday (and a big Saturday night in Sydney). It just happened this was the same w/e as the Hillsborough tragedy and, before the era of mobile phones, my mother, who is the complete OPPOSITE of a football tragic was in shock when she heard the news story about Hillsborough on the Sunday morning, thinking it was the game we were attending! Thankfully, my dad is a football tragic and eased her mind. Anyway, Charlie Yankos slipped, Israel scored and, even thought Trimmers gave us hope right at the end, another World Cup campaign was over. We hopped in the car for the 10 hour journey back to Melbourne and work on Monday morning! So, yeah ... I've been to a few NT matches - and shed a few tears - in the past 34 years!

If I recall correctly, Ronaldo, playing for Inter at the time, was only allowed to play one game for Brazil. In the end he didn't play any and in the Melbourne game people who had bought tickets were refunded their money. It Was a bit of a debacle. I did go to the World All star game at Homebush, I think it was to open the stadium if I recall. I remember the World All star team barely finding enough players to field a team !! The game was as boring as they come though. I did see Taibo West in Central Sydney the next day though and as he was playing for Inter at the time thought it was pretty cool.

Fussball i almost attened zero of these matches and zero of any football matches, but weirdly i did attend the world all stars klinsman's all star in 1999 at stadium Australia. I will say homebush stadium australia . Was a boring match. I could not get tickets to the 2005 socerrpos world cup qualifier . Did you fuss go to the MCG in 2001 or in 1997 to watch the soccer's qualifiers for world cup. And today i had lazy day on the couch so did miss the NSW state league grand final between 2 historic old NSL clubs. but they got 10,000 to the match so good turn out. Sydney olympic won. i read there grass roots plan on the are Facebook site it looked so good. ANd the olympic and sydney united logos are good to. Wish i went today would of been good. But fuss you fail to mention the controversy surrounding both the Brazil and the man united matches in sydney, where in the man united one apparently form memory david buckram sensationally pulled out.

1. Aust 3 - 2 World Stars, 12 June 1999, Stadium Australia Attendance: 88k 2. Australia 0 - 2 Man United, 15 July 1999, MCG Attendance: 60k 3. Australia 0 - 2 Brasil, 14 November 1999, Stadium Australia Attendance: 50k 4. Australia 2- 2 Brasil, 17 November 1999, MCG Attendance: 71k (Australia were 2-0 up and then 2-1 up with 4 minutes to play) Not bad crowds for practice matches ... Johnno calls the matches a flop, but, based on Johnno's prior posts I'm almost certain Johnno didn't attend any of the matches and is, therefore, forming an opinion based on hearsay and no direct facts. And the 71k people in Melbourne - yes, I was one of them - can say "we saw Ronaldinho score for Brasil before he emerged as a superstar".

Man united will be a disaster for an exhibition match. Remmeber i think was 1999 and all that problems with David Beckham coming out and he didn't come out. And from memory Dwight yorke or it could of been another Man united player caused usurious injury to Simon Colosimo not good. Also the brazil exhibition match to was a flop form memory. It was either the Man united or the brazil match it was a total flop because fo the no shows ins tar players apparently they had to form memory refund the tickets or let the gates open for free. SO we should not take the risk of ding these all star matches again because of the problems of the past.

I thought about an All-star game to kick off the season against a big overseas club ala what MLS does. Say Man Utd v A-league XI, However, the move to October negates that. The A-league game wouldn't draw that well. People want to see "stars" and star teams. Anyway All star games are really about the schmoozing of sponsors and the like and the game plays second fiddle. Australians don't do that thing really well.

There aren't enough Socceroos matches to pass around. I think many people would jump at the chance to see high level football being played in their city, even if it is only an exhibition match.
