Wallabies' World Cup exit pulls TV ratings

By The Roar / Editor

The All Blacks 20-6 World Cup defeat of the Wallabies has proved a ratings winner in Australia, scoring 1.788 million viewers on free-to-air TV on Channel Nine and receiving a record audience on pay television for a combined nationwide television audience of 3.234 million people

The average total people metro audience on Nine was 1.788 million, according to OzTam, with 710,000 watching in Sydney, 376,000 in Melbourne, 409,000 in Brisbane, 141,000 in Adelaide and 152,000 in Perth.

The semi-final was the top rating free-to-air program on Sunday.

On Fox Sports, the semi-final attracted a national subscription TV audience of 701,000, according to OzTam. This is the highest rating show in Australian pay TV history, taking over from the 2011 Super Rugby final, which saw 531,000 viewers tune in.

The third most-watched program in pay TV history was the Australia-South Africa 2011 World Cup quarter-final with 468,000 viewers.

The free-to-air TV semi-final audience builds on from the Springbok-Wallaby quarter-final, which was watched by 807,000 on Nine.

Regionally the trans-Tasman clash also attracted strong numbers with 727,000 tuning to watch the host nation progress to next Sunday’s final against France.

On Saturday the World Cup semi clash between Wales and Frances was watched by 809,000 viewers on Nine, receiving 316,000 in Sydney, 157,000 in Melbourne, 194,000 in Brisbane, 49,000 in Adelaide and 95,000 in Perth.

Can I include NZ's ratings in our viewership figures? If the NRL can do it can I (the crazy rugby fan) do it to prove my sport is bigger than the AFL?

It shows the FIFA WC is more popular/bigger than the IRB WC, not that the Socceroos are bigger than the Wallabies.

kovana, just to see how league compares to Rugby internationally - the Aust/NZ league game got 221k in NZ compared to over 2 million for the Rugby, so you can see how much more most kiwis are into the Rugby.

What it does show is the match really counts the Wallabies are Australia's 2nd biggest national team, Socceroos would be number 1.

Okay.. From what i have gathered... These great TV ratings mean... Nothing. They had great Ratings in 2003... Now how about the local Rugby scene.. WHich is most important.. How about participation levels? TV ratings are great and all, but they most likely dont represent the true place of the sport in the sporting landscape.

Renegade said | Today | Report comment 1.78M – that’s poor…..sunday primetime i was expecting over 3 million at the very least. It’s funny how a world event is being compared to the domestic grand final – even then over 2mil watched GF and it was only shown live in 3 cities at a less viewer friendly time. That’s a massive fail. http://www.theroar.com.au/2011/10/17/new-zealand-will-still-win-the-four-nations/ What a massive chip on his shoulder.

there was a huge audience there for the rugby last night and there will be more come semi final time in 2015 and even more in 2019. im not sure if any of those who watched the 42-6 dropping of the kiwis will want a repeat of that.
