Wallabies' World Cup exit pulls TV ratings

The All Blacks 20-6 World Cup defeat of the Wallabies has proved a ratings winner in Australia, scoring 1.788 million viewers on free-to-air TV on Channel Nine and receiving a record audience on pay television for a combined nationwide television audience of 3.234 million people

The average total people metro audience on Nine was 1.788 million, according to OzTam, with 710,000 watching in Sydney, 376,000 in Melbourne, 409,000 in Brisbane, 141,000 in Adelaide and 152,000 in Perth.

The semi-final was the top rating free-to-air program on Sunday.

On Fox Sports, the semi-final attracted a national subscription TV audience of 701,000, according to OzTam. This is the highest rating show in Australian pay TV history, taking over from the 2011 Super Rugby final, which saw 531,000 viewers tune in.

The third most-watched program in pay TV history was the Australia-South Africa 2011 World Cup quarter-final with 468,000 viewers.

The free-to-air TV semi-final audience builds on from the Springbok-Wallaby quarter-final, which was watched by 807,000 on Nine.

Regionally the trans-Tasman clash also attracted strong numbers with 727,000 tuning to watch the host nation progress to next Sunday’s final against France.

On Saturday the World Cup semi clash between Wales and Frances was watched by 809,000 viewers on Nine, receiving 316,000 in Sydney, 157,000 in Melbourne, 194,000 in Brisbane, 49,000 in Adelaide and 95,000 in Perth.

On Fox Sports the same game received a national pay TV audience of 360,000.
