Victory performance labelled a disgrace

Melbourne Victory youngster Matthew Foschini has slammed the side’s performance in the 0-0 A-League draw against Melbourne Heart, labelling it a disgrace.

Foschini, 21, was one of his side’s better performers in a limp-wristed effort against the Heart at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Only goalkeeper Ante Covic’s marvellous performance between the sticks saved the Victory from defeat.

Boasting a star-studded attack including Socceroos Harry Kewell and Archie Thompson and under rookie coach Mehmet Durakovic, the Victory haven’t found the net in their opening three matches.

And they were a rudderless rabble going forward against the Heart – heaping pressure on all at the club to finally put it together having managed just two draws so far this season.

Foschini didn’t hold back when asked his thoughts of the performance in front of nearly 40,000 fans – most of whom booed the Victory off after the draw.

“As a playing group we cannot accept that kind of performance,” said Foschini.

“We’re the biggest club in Australia and if we’re going to go out there, and give that to our fans, it’s a disgrace to be honest.

“We’re just not gelling, we’re not working hard enough for each other and we’ve got no one to blame but ourselves.

“Every one of us needs to look each other in the eye, and say ‘it’s just not good enough’ or we’re going to continue on a downward spiral.”

Durakovic was far more measured, preaching patience as his team continues to work Kewell – ineffective for a second successive match – into its structure.

The Victory now face a difficult few weeks, with an away trip to Wellington next weekend followed by a visit from competition benchmarks Brisbane Roar the following week.

Maybe so Roger, but I don't think Harry would see it that way and like Robbie would spit the dummy I think. Especially by a manager who has no track record and has only coached MV youth team on his CV.

Durakovic is a rookie coach and I would say the Victory Board may have anticipated this situation occuring to some point when they hired him but having very poor start has heaped pressure on the club from Round 1. Problem is I think Durakovic offers no solution to fix this issue besides "sticking the ball in the back of the net" etc etc You wonder if the club regret not appointing Roy Keane to the role now when he was interested...

Roger, fair enough, I'm sitting back watching, no stats in front of me, and I'm honestly wondering how often the keeper has been tested in the first three games, and all I know is, it ain't a lot.

The saddest part is that we're probably going to lose all those fans and interest, probably won't be long until we get crowds of 13,000 again like last year. Mehmet appears clueless but most words to the media by coaches are complete drivel. He's only had 3 matches, from memory Ange did not get it right in 3 matches, he had half a season, before 2010/11 commenced. I'm not saying that Mehmet is anything like Ange, but he's barely had any time. If i were the MV Board, I'd give him until round 10 to show any signs of improvement or promise, or it's out the door. Archie says that the players are really sharp and nail it in training, but when they come on the field it all goes to rubbish? If this is true then why? Could their training be lacking intensity? Or is it because Mehmet is tactically a dud and has little understanding on how to manage a football team? The biggest trouble is we're having 40,000 people watching, argh!!!! We want to keep those fans not scare them away.

Worst game I've ever seen MV play, and I've been seeing at least 50% of games since 2006.

Right on cat. Jamesb - your summary of the problem (without even seeing the game) is pretty much it. Lots of talent, no teamwork.

I'd say it's a bit harsh to say "barely a shot on goal", but I do agree that our scoring opportunities have been few.

QsAF - it was a mistake to pull Rojas off over Kewell last night. We look most likely down the right hand side with Rojas taking the ball down. He's young, and can run 90 minutes. Not saying he's better than Harry, but I am saying he can run for longer. There is no shame in a 33 y/o player being subbed off at 60-70 minutes.

Good God. That was a TERRIBLE game and a real let-down for the A-League, especially compared to last season's derbies. No goals in the first three games and even Heart have scored? That itself is unacceptable, but Durakovic is proving no improvement on Merrick. Maybe because he's not the one pulling the strings. Both teams' defences did better in this game than their attacks.

Any team with Antonis, Carle & Emerton in the midfield is not average.

jamesb that gets to the heart of the problem (no pun intended). Let me give you some examples to answer the question about Mehm, and I'm sure you've heard this as well. 1. When Harry was first recruited, Mehm was asked directly what kind of role he had in mind for Harry, whether he had special instructions in mind for him. Now fair enough, we don't expect him to reveal all, but his answer was along the lines that Harry was such a great player, he'd know what to do on the day - that's not a good answer, and is sort of what you are getting at with the first part of your post. 2. Last night, Mehm was asked directly about how he intends to lead MV out of this hole, and he repeated ad nauseum that all they had to do was hit the back of the net - a bit like saying we just need to win. But the problem is that the passing is abysmal at the moment, the players don't understand what they are doing, repeatedly passing behind, or into space where there's no one waiting - and the opposition are picking them off with ease.

But we have to be perfectly honest here, some of those saves barely qualify has half-chances.

without seeing the game i get the feeling MV is relying on indivduals to get them over the line, whereas with a team like Roar its a team effort engrossed in Ange's system. i was at the gym the other day, while working out, i was watching a replay of last weeks game adelaide v Victory. From what i saw, MV did nothing, while Adelaide did what they had to do to get a result. You could say it was false hope for Adelaide because a week later they were beaten by a goaless Sydney. so getting back to MV.................... does Mehmet Durakovic have a system in place.?

Hey Middy - for sure that's how I felt last night. But, come on, with the Dream Team we've assembled at Olympic Blvd it won't be long before we're singing this song again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-07_2DWfEmQ :-)

Last night, from memory, Bolton saved: 1 from Archie, 1 from Rojas and 2-3 from JCS. Galekovic I don't think made a save, but that's b/c Susak & McKain put wonderful tackles in at the death. H scuffed a shot from 5m out and Leijer, too, should have scored from 5m out.
