UFC 139: Henderson bests Shogun in epic five round battle

By Sam Cupitt / Roar Guru

There was a reason hardcore fans were especially pumped up for UFC 139’s main event between Dan Henderson and Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua.

It wasn’t because they are two of the premiere light heavyweights in the world or because they are a reminder of the glory days of the Pride Fighting Championships. It is because Dan Henderson and Shogun Rua are fighters. They are fighters in every sense of the word.

In an age of game planning and athletes performing within themselves, Henderson and Shogun remain as two fighters that just throw whatever they have whenever they have to.

Sunday’s main event showed what happens when you pit two fighters of that ilk against each other as Henderson and Shogun fought what many have labelled as the greatest fight in Mixed Martial Arts history.

It began with Henderson showing the power in his right hand that fans have come to know and fellow fighters have come to fear.

For the first two and a half rounds Henderson battered and repeatedly dropped Shogun with it. On more than one occasion Shogun looked finished but no more than in the third round where Henderson landed his best of the night.

The blow forced Shogun to turtle up in a manner similar to his destruction at the hands of Jon Jones earlier this year, but Henderson could not find the finishing blow and seemed to blow out his energy in the process.

Amazingly Shogun turned the situation to his advantage as he spun into a heel hook that more than anything stopped Henderson from punching him in the face.

That was only the beginning of his comeback though as he survived that round to turn it around and stagger his exhausted opponent midway through the fourth round. Henderson could barely manage to defend himself and Shogun capitalised to score a takedown and batter the former Strikeforce and Pride champion from mount.

The fifth round was all Shogun who again secured mount and spent the majority of the final round battering Henderson from that position. There was a case for a 10-8 round in the third and final rounds for either fighters which could have made the scorecards interesting.

However, the judges opted for 10-9 scores throughout resulting in Henderson taking the fight three rounds to two for a unanimous decision.

It was a truly amazing fight that saw both fighters having to go to the hospital afterwards. Henderson may very well have leaped Rashad Evans to be the next in line to challenge for the light heavyweight title but it seems at the moment all anyone wants is another five rounds from these two.

If it wasn’t for that fight, the biggest storyline of the fight most likely would have been the return of vintage Wanderlei Silva, albeit for just thirty seconds of the second round.

UFC newcomer, Cung Le showcased his exceptional “traditional” martial arts background in the first round as he kept the ‘Axe Murderer’ at bay with his flashy arsenal of tricks. He even managed to drop Silva with a kick/spinning back fist combination.

But his 18-month layoff stopped his success from continuing as his fatigue allowed Silva inside and from there the Axe Murderer got his Pride on. The finishing blows were some quickfire punches to a desperate Le on the ground, but it was the nose-crushing knee on the feet that was the clincher.

I’m not sure what to do with Silva following this victory but it is nice to see the Wanderlei of old, even if just for a brief moment.

Urijah Faber secured a much-anticipated third date with UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz as he put a beating on the quietly spoken, Brian Bowles.

Some fans were bemoaning before the fight that Faber has to do less than other fighters to earn a title shot, but I’m going to assume most of those guys aren’t going to complain now as Faber turned in the best performance of his career.

Brian Bowles is no mug but Faber made him look that way. Faber was simply all over Bowles in every department, with his stand-up especially looking the best it ever has as he thumped Bowles with an uppercut and brutalized him on the ground before submitting him with his trademark guillotine.

The rest of the main card saw Martin Kampmann firmly putting an end to Rick Story’s rise with a one sided (even if the judges scored it a split) decision win and Stephan Bonnar switching things up and opting to grind out Kyle Kingsbury on the ground for a comfortable unanimous decision win.

The Shogun/Henderson fight has to be the best fight of 2011,the last fight that was similar was the Griffin/ Bonnar fight.Did any read of the Bleacher Report GSP saying that the Shogun Henderson fight wasn't that good of a fight, what fight was he watching? This is coming from someone who fights defensively and then says that he wanted to knock out/submit his opponent,WHAT A CROCK!!! All his fights ends the same way,They go for all five rounds, and as much as I'm not a Nick Diaz fan I now want Diaz to beat GSP

I've tried to be a Rashad fan but he always seems to keep me at bay though. I also took a guilty pleasure in the fact that he decided to wait for a title shot and ended up seeing his teammate take that title and then the last guy he beat fight for it. Then he tried to bluff Jones into accepting the bout at UFC 140, Jones accepted and then he had to back out. If he gets leapfrogged again, it's on him.

True but if Rashad had to wait again it would be hilarious.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cung Le retires after that. If he doesn't, a fight with Chris Leben would be good fun even if Le's brain will probably get scrambled again. I doubt they'd throw him in with a grappler of any kind.

Agree about Rashad - he deserves a shot at Jones/Machida far more than Henderson does.

I've been following UFC/form the beginning and that was one of the best cards I've ever watched. The Main Event Hendo v Shogun was epic with Hendo looking like he could/would finish the fight at anytime till late in the third, when a bloodied and swollen Shogun who had been beaten from pillar to post and had somehow managed to survive somehow from somewhere started to land blows with purpose. A massive rolling uppercut to Hendersons chin rocked him (still can't believe it didn't KO him) and it was Henderson turn to survive over the last two rounds Shogun had the upper hand and the last round Henderson was completely gassed and Shogun managed to pass guard and mount a number of times somehow Henderson survived. The fight could have been a draw so dominant was Shoguns last round, Henderson was a deserving winner though. While watching the fight you knew it was an instant classic, it was everything the UFC wished there Fox telecast last week could have been. Skill, power, heart and iron bloody will from both champions. I'll watch this fight over and over and the UFC would do well to release it to be aired on free to air asap, this fight is the language that people understand, heart, will and guts everyone understands it when they see it and it how greatness is forged. Wanderlei Silva v Cung Le well who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks Wanderlei was patient, worked to a game plan that in part nullified that explosive kicking and spinning strikes from Cung. Cung had his moments in the first round with a spinning back fist but was unable to capitalize. Cung landed a few very telling techniques but fatigue and Wanndy's smart game plan lead to the inevitable a Wanndy swarm resulting in the stoppage. He's not the Silva of old but he's worth the price of admission on any card. Urijah Faber v Brian Bowles Wow Faber dominated, overpowered Bowles no other way to put it and his G/choke was swift and brutally efficient and usually a favored technique of Bowles it was a fitting way to finish the bout. Martin Kampmann v Rick Story Entertaining fight but Kaupmann was dominant I have no idea what the hell the judges were watching I would have scored it 30-27 you maybe could argue a split round and Story never gave up and did bloody Kampmann but he was out classed. Kampmann has some wicked kicks. Stephan Bonnar v Kyle Kingsbury It was a different type of fight from Bonnar, Kingsbury certainly didn't expect this style of fight and was dominated on the ground and had Bonnar really gone after him with his ground and pound maybe he could have finish the fight early. And for those maybe thinking Bader was on the slide, guys with his kind of power are always one punch for starting and new winning streak and Brilz look massively out sized and classed buy Bader. As great as Henderson was Sugar should get his shot at Jones, now that is a fight I can't wait to see.

hey sam, nice summary, an amazing card yesterday, and truely exceptional main event. i am surprised at the result however, i scored the fight a draw. i thought rua came back super strong in rounds 4 and 5, and was unlucky not to be awarded a 10-8 for the final. he had dominant position for almost 5 minutes and controlled the round superbly. he repeatedly took down henderson and by my view, no way was it only just 10-9. in saying that though, superb fight and henderson probably got his just desserts......even though i wouldnt have complianed if it was drawn. fight of the year IMO. some other mentionables....faber earns a title shot, darth bader stops his losing streak, kampman bounces back after losing a conterversial fight to sanchez....and henderson gets winner of jones v machida (a fight i believe machida can win) it was my first look at cung le after a lot of hype. and i dont think he was that great. any idea who he might have next?
