Melbourne Victory have sacked coach Mehmet Durakovic just a day before their home A-League clash with Newcastle Jets.
At a press conference this morning, club chairman Anthony Di Pietro and managing director Richard Wilson confirmed the axing and announced Kevin Muscat will step in a caretaker coach for Saturday’s game against the Jets.
The Victory board lost faith in Durakovic after a spluttering start which has yielded just three wins along with six draws and five losses.
After three successive losses, the team has failed to gel and is languishing in eighth spot on the 10-team ladder despite a star-studded line-up including the acquisition of Harry Kewell.
Durakovic, the former youth team coach, was only appointed full-time in June after a stint as caretaker following the sacking of long-time coach Ernie Merrick in March.
Under Durakovic, the Victory have only been competitive against the lower-ranked sides and struggled against the pace-setting teams.

possible replacements: Ange Postecoglou, Graham Arnold, Paul Okon, Frank Farina or even Gianfranco Zola

Re a local coach, I have thought likewise about Eddie Krncevic. I am one of the old Carlton SC supporters (all 32 of us!) who watched the urbane Krncevic sweep in and rapidly build a squad that contained some of the biggest future-names in Aussie football; Grella, Colosimo, Bresciano and of course a young skinny fly-away named Archie Thompson. He damn near won the championship in that first season and the team played some beautiful football but somehow he fell off the radar not long after that. Not sure if he is up to it but he definitely looks better in a suit that poor old Mehm.

Farina would be a good match, he has domestic success in the NSL and I thought did an O.K job with The Roar especially in building young talent. He is also known for his people skills. He coped allot of flack as national coach but if you look at our 2006 and 2010 world cup campaigns, they were largely based upon the team that Farina built and developed in the early 2000's.

Now the board only needs to sack itself. It's has managed to turn the most stable club in the league into a rabble they have sacked 2 managers and 2 football operations managers in 12 months .. Meanwhile nice little article in the hun today on Merrick -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Would love to know what old Fussy thinks of all this; and where is he by the by? Maybe he got hit by the (Heartless) Bus. So whilst the choice of the next coach rests purely in the realm of the wildly speculative, my personal choice would be one Terry Venables. Apart from the fact he's getting a bit long in the tooth, he is a guy that would grab major headlines here and overseas, knows a bit about Aussie footballers, is a proven coaching winner at the highest level and I would think in his mind, has a big chunk of unfinished business down under. And apart from the RESPECT he would get in the dressing room, he would be the ideal guy to set up the Victory Football Department, spend a couple of years knocking the (very) rough edges off assistant KM before retiring gracefully with a Championship and a GF under his belt. If it's going to be an English coach, there's not many others you'd want.

I just love the way Swansea play, they remind me of Brisbane Roar! Hard to believe that it's a British club with a British Manager, considering they have a Dutch/Catalan style of football.

Is this the "Terry Butcher" coach that MV had to have? OMG, British kick and run here we come !!!!!! HEART will be looking better every day if this one comes true. Brendan Rodgers of Swansea or Roberto Martinez of Wigan better choices.

If we're going for an o/s coach it should be someone with some kind of proven track record and not someone like Lavicka or Coolen. Let's not get a foreign coach merely for the sake of it, in other words. Personally I wouldn't mind a local coach as long as it's one who preaches attacking football and/or tactical astuteness - how about this: Eddie Krncevic or Ian Dobson. That both are yet to coach in the A-League, seven years on from Season 1, is an aberration bordering on criminal!

my inside mail is saying that Dowie has the job... just sorting out details now. there will be a few naysayers complaining about a british coach, but it's a good appointment IMO.

Probably safe til April but if performances don't improve who knows, there are already a few calls for youth coach Ian Crook to step in as at least interim coach.

Where would we be without the publicity machine called Melbourne Victory?

Graham Arnold was pilloried in the football press when he was National team coach..what has changed?? only the context in which he is the manager. FF could be a perfect fit for MVC. I don't see it, but that's why I'm not involved at that level perhaps.
