An open letter to Channel Nine

By Ghost Crayfish / Roar Pro

Dear Channel Nine, I write to you as one of many frustrated rugby league fans. Please hear me out.

This letter is not about the infuriatingly poor quality of your NRL commentary team, nor is it focussed on the laughably tired format and tone of your Footy Show.

I don’t even intend to complain about your match sheduling that only seems to pay attention to 10, at best, of the 16 clubs. I will not focus on your pathetic, deplorable coverage of rugby league (at NRL, State of Origin and international levels) outside of New South Wales and Queensland.

Your conduct in that regard, particularly, is a heinous farce for which I hope the NRL punishes you dearly when broadcast rights are soon negotiated. However, as promised, this letter will leave that alone.

So what is the point of this letter, you ask? Moving past the grievances all sensible-minded rugby league fans have with your network, I can now move on to my current gripe: your coverage of the English Super League.

It has bs been bugging me for years, the question that floats into my mind at the most inoportune moments. Why did you buy the rights, only to broadcast the games in the post-midnight hours of Sunday and Monday nights?

While it’s clear from much of your programming decision-making in general that your executives are quite clueless when it comes to understanding how society functions, or what concerns most ordinary intelligent people, I’d have thought that it obvious that no one will be watching delayed sporting telecasts in these hours.

While the cocaine-infused lifestyles of your best and brightest programmers might suggest otherwise, I can confidently guarantee that the majority of working Australians are, in fact, asleep at these times.

If you could explain yourself, providing an answer to the question which has so long haunted me, I would be eternally grateful. I am tired of this vexing riddle constantly drifting into my thoughts!

I have devoted years to this conundrum – losing women, friends and the respect of my work colleagues in the process – but still I am none the wiser. Despite the advice I once heard in a martial arts film about how a warrior must “understand their enemy” before engaging in battle, I write now to concede that I have no idea how you operate.

What goes through your mind, Channel Nine? Your network now has three channels, including Gem and Go. Is this really the best you can do?

I hope you will enlighten me, though after years of disappointment at your hands, I won’t hold my breath.

Yours, resigned to failure,

Ghost Crayfish

Fair dinkum. Just turned the NRL coverage off. What is with the Sonny Bill Williams RUBBISH on the nine coverage.Bulldogs v Roosters. Absolute rubbish. I am going to put pen to paper next week. Idiotic. When was the game EVER be about the individual. ? Plus, a half ordinary footballer ? I have switched to the AFL, have the NRL bosses and channel nine lost their marbles ?

If by simply responding to comments that a code is not getting decent coverage in Sydney and vice versa in Melbourne is supposed to be angst.,then Jaceman you have changed the definition of the word.I make no apologies, and stand firmly behind my observations. In actual fact the three teams had players spread over other NRL cubs, the Storm were recipients in the main of Red's players.60 players did not go to the Storm. . Why do you continue to bring the Vichy subject up,fishing expedition? or usual trolling exercise? guilt? Or you can get away with it ? I am incapable of visiting the Age and herald sun websites re Storm stories and rl stories in general . I also visited Melbourne on a few occasions,on sales seminars.

Funny I thought I agreed with you that the Swans got good coverage when they started. If you look at the Hun in 1998 and you live in Sydney so I doubt you saw it it was realtively high level of Storm stuff for the level of following it had...Its 12 years ago and they folded 3 teams to make the Storm plus Broncos gave Lazarus, they ahve won 3 titles , how long can you keep up the angst - not as long as Vichy I hope...

As the saying goes very interesting. In today's D.T. now advising ch10 reviewing their budgets and working on securing all 8 matches each week(NRL).Until recently they were indicating only high rating monday or friday, now they want the lot. That should put the cat among the Tv pigeons. It would appear to support my view ,which was ridiculed by the flag wavers ch10 was leaving, its powder dry for an NRL grab.Additionally because the station was pursuing a youth policy, that IMO rl would be a nice fit. Imagine a 9th match beamed from Perth on sunday evening. Bring it on babee I now wait til this pans out,but ch9 might finally be on the receiving end of Tv viewing karma. You use it ,or you lose it.ch9 had a dreadful habit of abusing it.

Jaceman. The day you look for positives on rl threads,is the day I will give up red meat. And we argue it is 9 Melbourne not 9 Sydney. Your point is refuted as the WCC involving Leeds and manly will now be shown live on Gem due to fan protests not on delay. Which suggests to me programming and head honchos in these stations do have control.

Jaceman Your point only reinforces my publicity view. Barry Round and co dancing around the Opera House. And when the Sl war was in full swing the SMH quite literally danced to the tune of that club. The club has been getting plenty of media coverage ever since.Edelsten, swanettes,Willessee, crowds compared to rl Plugger,Hall Hall, the fat lipped bloke with the long hair Capper, the old guy behind the posts who is an institution, the mascot, the new club at Maroubra and the woman raving about the code, the Buddhist guy who is spreading the word,Barrass, the last coach who married a Yank and is spreading the word on the West Coast of USA.Could fill a library with the stories.. Good on the code ,but please don't pretend the Sydney media ignores FHS. Now GWS has taken up the baton with Neil Cordy in the D.T. The Storm would have killed to get half the publicity in the Melbourne print media. You guys are quite happy to rip into News re part owning the NRL and providing the coverage, yet you make excuses for the early days of the Swans. News is out than goodness,so lets see how they perform for rugby league.

Jaceman I'd suggest the loss of access to a product that delivers consistent ratings (even with competition) should be motivation enough. Even this weekend's World Club Challenge is going out live "across the country" on GEM (Saturday morning 7am). Would this have happened outside of a impending negotiating period? As reported in the Daily Telegraph this morning; Gallop said. "If you're running a network and there's the possibility of getting your hands on over 30 weeks of high-rating cross-demographic content, you would be mad not to be interested." This would have to be the first time in recent years we've seen Gallop get on the front foot and "talk up" his product.

Forget about Channel 9... http://lockerz.com/s/184015715 When Channel 10 wants all the games, it's going to be hard for Channel 9 to ensure that they aren't beat by 20% on the rights if they just haven't got the cash to bid for all the games.

It wasnt a negative - it was just a suggestion that Nine has all the cards in which games get on TV in Melbourne and if the NRL has to pay something outside the contract then maybe thats where Nines financial position is at this time..

Swans on front page when they arrived - a big news story I would have thought but true they attended party at Lady Fairfaxes house so therefore got on front page of the owners newspaper...

Jaceman. I unfortunately read your comments ,and that is what I responded to. The fact of the matter is ch9 has financial obligations for the Olympics, regardless of when it was negotiated. Again Gyngell has openly stated they will have to pay a hell of a lot more for the FTA rights. He can't make such an assertion ,if he hasn''t got the money(re your rant " we are nearly broke " ) nor the approval of the financial backers behind the station. Packer owning the station 5 years ago, bears no relevance to how the station ,operates under new owners. Unless ch9 does a ch10 and gets into deep .....,then they have to spend the money for content, such content that gives the return the financiers require. I know you like to historically look for negatives on rl threads ,thus my rant is in response to that.

CC If you had read Booms qn you mightnt have gone off on your usual rant - it was about the premiership opener - GF replay -one game on Melbourne TV!!!! Nine negotiated the Olympics 5 years ago when packer was still part owner http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2007/10/nine-and-foxtel-win-2012-olympics-rights.html

Be careful of what you wish for. It seems like just yesterday when Optus and Foxtel burst into our lounge rooms with the promise of zero advertisements - a provision of uninterrupted news, sports, music, movies, documentaries, and cartoons, for a monthly subscription fee of around $50 for every single channel. There are only two genres that remain which are free of advertisements - live sport, and movies that can be hired for a dollar at the local video shop from "the new to weekly" shelf. Take FTA out of the equation and it won't be long before Fox start slipping in the ads. Then you'll be back to square one - and paying for something that used to be free.

The same broke Tv station, that paid for the Olympics. Desperate measures. Sometimes one has to spend money to make money. In fact the code will get the bids from 9 and Fox,and they have 90 days, then ch7 and 10 will throw in their dollars worth. This time 3 FTA stations last time one. You know what happens to flies on the wall. I am not concerned about what happens during negoatiations, just the outcome. But we must be pleased you are showing concern.

Jaceman. News it out of the picture who will be the whipping boy now ,Master(usually outnumbered 3 to 1 on the offsiders)s is treated at times as being a little senile, but C Wilson and P Smith will continue to throw their ignorant rl comments around, for the scraping masses.Figures.

RedB Spare me days..If you believe that you know little of what happened in the years 82 to 2000 in the Sydney media. Cop out LOL,when i spelt out exactly why there was antagonism re Folau and Hunt, red rag to a bull. There was nowhere near the angst toward the Swans, where Sydney have accepted and at times applauded their efforts.they didn't grab high profile rl players. The very first day of their arrival front page of the SMH. You need to spend time researching the Sydney media since 1982,it appears you may learn something.ATM you are grasping at straws and reinforcing the view that the cheerleaders from down south live in a bubble, with blinkers.. I treat the ten times the amount with the humour with which it deserves. .

jaceman. They may or may not be interested ,we don't know. You work in the media, and I know a couple of people who do likewise. They are in no better position to nominate what the code /stations will do,than I am able to so do. What we do know,ch9 is desperate to retain their top rating product, and if they retain it they will have paid for it market value.Same applies to Fox. Gallop is stating a position to ch9 and has doen likewise with Foxtel, this is wherewe are ,don't take us for granted and sharpen the pencil.Gallop will not be the only one involved in negotiations, others such as,Grant,Pemberton,Elliot and Sutcliffe will also be on the negotiation committee. And News Ltd will not be in that team. Is Gallop supposed to remain silent? I have been involved in marketing, never undersell your product. This board is hardly my sole source,in fact miniscule by comparision of all representative viewpoints on the matter of rl on channel 9.It reeks of comments in rl magazines, radio talkback, even regional papers when I visit and spectators at games. They are hardly my friends, letter writers to papers or talkback. In fact I suggest i know you better than them LOL.. Packer is not there now .If you wish to live in the past, and use that as your debating basis, you are treading on eggshells. The station is owned by various institutional financial backers.Different owners, different requirements.

I assume the NRL will broach the subject with Nine who will say what are you going to give me in return (because we are nearly broke and the contract doesnt specify us showing it) to which the NRL will say nothing or some contra deal and it might be shown. Love to be a fly on the wall...
