Forrest to make way for Clarke in Friday's ODI

By dassy_92 / Roar Rookie

Adopted Queenslander Peter Forrest is expected to make way for returning Allan Border medallist and Australian captain Michael Clarke.

Clarke will likely return from a back injury in Friday’s One Day International against Sri Lanka, leaving Forrest out for this match and the entire finals series.

David Warner, the other batsman who was in the firing line, managed to secure his place through a man of the match performance with the bat against India last Sunday. Forrest only managed a scratchy seven batting at three, before being bowled by Praveen Kumar.

Forrest has been impressive so far in this One Day Series by scoring two half centuries and a century since his debut against India in Adelaide.

However, the form of other batsman, namely Clarke and David Hussey, along with the return of Shane Watson means there is no room for the burly New South Welshman.

One hope for Forrest is for the selectors to leave out all rounder Dan Christian. However there is a feeling that it is still too risky for all rounder and Vice-captain Shane Watson, to bowl a full ten overs and needs Christian’s support.

All is not lost for Forrest, however, with his selection in the Twenty20 and One Day squads for the tour of the West Indies.

Also picked was recently dumped keeper-batsman Brad Haddin.

Haddin is expected to be the second choice of keeper behind Matthew Wade in the shorter formats while maintaining his place in the Test side.

I'm gutted re Uzzie's more recent form. Poor bugger. Would love to see him go to Tas - they seem to have great coaching structure that's bringing out the best in many of their players, plus tough pitch conditions beneficial. Queensland a good option too perhaps. http://www.donnybrookmail.com.au/news/national/national/sport/rivals-set-sights-on-blues-stars/2475977.aspx

Chris Lynn is going to have to score a ton, he's dropped three catches already.

Not sure why they aren't playing Ali McDermott and Boyce these kids along with Cutting are all potential Australian players in the next 3 years.

I hate the fact everyone thinks scoring slowly is terrible. Quiney scored 83 off 240 odd balls for Victoria. Anchors to innings are needed.

Tassie rolled SA for 126. SA lost their last 9 for 43. Ouch. Tom Cooper out 3rd ball. Faulkner and Jackson Bird both 4 fors. Cowan went cheaply and Tassie were 2 for 57 - effectively 3 for 57 with one opener retired hurt - then Punter stroked a casual 130 off 170. Tassie 5 down and now nearly 200 ahead. Tough for SA to come back from there. WA have the Vics 8 for 260. Hogan and Rimmington did the damage with the ball. Vics were 7 for 213 till of course Sids came in. He's 30no and digging another team out of a hole. Bats lower for Vic than he does for Australia! Quiney's 83 their only score of note (and off 245 balls!).

NSW playing Qld in a Shield game right now. Believe it or not Khawaja got to 15 slowly and got out. He isn't helping himself. Maddinson failed. Harris by far the best bowler for Qld. Cutting no wickets and hit around a bit. Hughes got to 73 (then LBW), and with 15 fours! Katich 40 and out. Smith 40 not out, but still batting too high, with Haddin at 6. Nevill playing as a specialist bat at 7, SOK 8 and Coyte 9 I guess. Short a specialist bowler. Smith the 5th bowler, so maybe he'll get a decent bowl. He shouldn't bat any higher than 6 for NSW in the 4-day game. Qld playing Floros and Hopes sharing 4th bowler duties. Cutting, Magoffin and Ryan Harris make it a very decent bowling lineup. Most interest with their batting is on Lynn and Burns.

Can't pick Christian as the third quick. Would like to see the ODI team post t20 WC start to work towards the ODI WC so drop both Husseys and Lee. Watson, Khawaja, S. Marsh, Clarke, Ferguson, Wade, M. Marsh, Cutting, Coulter-Nile, Doherty, McDermott. 12th Faulkner. Not picking test bowlers giving them a break during ODIs.

Dump Warner the guy is over rated and has a poor One Day record in both international and domestic cricket. Watson, Wade, Forrest, Clarke, Hussey, Hussey, Christian, Pattinson, Lee, Doherty, Hilfenhaus. Doesn't look like Clarke is going to be right for Friday anyway so they should call Bailey up to bat at 4.

The one thing Forrest has done is give stability to the batting lineup, instead of being 2 or 3 for not many, he had stopped the rot in 3 out of 5 innings, just that 1 failure against SL which led to a real mess. Can't see the selectors resting Warner after he finally started to look comfortable.

Wade should be allowed to settle at 6/7. If they keep moving him up and down the order his batting will suffer longer term because of it. Post the T20 World Cup I would expect Lee to be close on retirement (he'll be 36 by the start of the 12/13 season), which should open up a spot for a bowling allrounder down the order. Christian will no doubt get his share of games over time, but it would also free up a spot for Forrest. A possible line-up come next season could be - Watson Warner Forrest D. Hussey Clarke M. Hussey (or if he pulls the pin on ODIs - Ferguson/Bailey/M. Marsh) Wade Faulkner/Christian/Coulter-Nile (who knows maybe even M. Johnson) Pattinson McKay/Hilfenhause Doherty/Lyon

Vas I agree that one of our specialist quicks should be replaced by a Faulkner or C-N type of bowling all rounder. Our tail is too long. I don't think getting to 100 off 135 balls cuts it these days. If you get to 100, you should be striking at close to 100 by then. Having said that, I don't think Clarke's a sensation ODI bat either. I just think there's room for only one of Forrest and Clarke in a ODI side. Warner hasn't got going in ODIs yet - they're backing him. I think a player like that needs a bit of faith, however I don't think you can open with a rookie like Wade alongside him. I think he has to open with a more solid option Watto (or Forrest or Clarke), which also gives you a left/right handed pairing. Watto can tear it up when he's on, though.

Never did I think I'd agree with you Kev, but ur spot on here. Forrest should not be dropped. In fact, I would think the changing nature of ODIs would mean he'd be an ideal person to open the batting given that early in the innings, the tactics seem to be about preserving wickets rather than getting off to rollicking starts. Right now though, the man who should make way is either Christian or a fast bowler, which could provide a way to get someone like James Faulkner or Nathan Coulter-Nile (a bowling allrounder) in the side. I still remember the important (and underrated) role Ian Harvey did for us as a bowling allrounder...

I'd take Forrest's 49 off 70 over Dave Warner's 23 off 28 every match.

Forrest faces too many dot balls. I don't think you can have both him and Clarke. One of them to bat at 3, then the Husseys, then Christian I guess. Then Wade.

It's a bit tough on Forrest, an average of 49 with one century and two half centuries after 5 matches. But if the selectors won't rest Warner (and he's a crowd magnet so I doubt they will) he will have to do what everyone else does and wait until the evergreen Hussey brothers get struck down by father time and can no longer compete (I wouldn't expect either to feature in limited overs cricket after the T20 world cup).
