Broncos deserve to be Friday night regulars

By MG Burbank / Roar Guru

There has been news recently in League circles detailing the collective desire of most club officals to have a fixed schedule in the NRL.

Many of them cited the inherent advantage the Brisbane Broncos receive, on many levels, through the almost constant scheduling of the Brisbane club’s games on a Friday night on Channel Nine.

At this stage the Broncos look set to feature on Friday in every round leading up to the State Of Origin series.

While having a set seven-day break between matches is advantageous in terms of routine, the commercial opportunities afforded to the Broncos through regular national exposure is the element that is creating the most resentment among rival clubs.

Cronulla, who are yet to receive a Friday game and with none in sight, have yet to sign a major sponsor. It’s representatives have some of the loudest voices when it comes to creating a set schedule for the entire season, as happens in the AFL.

Part of that plan would include a supposedly ‘fair’ spread of Friday night games for all clubs. David Gallop and the Independent Commission should not let themselves be intimidated by self-interested voices that disingenuously shriek for ‘fairness’.

I am an advocate for scheduling the entire NRL season in advance. Most major sports do it, and with good reason: it allows clubs to market their games more effectively. It also helps fans, especially those season ticket-holders and members who like to attend multiple games, to plan well in advance.

That said, a set schedule should have absolutely no bearing on which clubs play on a Friday night in front of a national audience.

The idea that the big TV games should be shared evenly is ridiculous. Yes, clubs should receive all the support the NRL can offer, from grants to organizational assistance and of course, their fair share of marketing appropriate for an NRL franchise.

But sport is entertainment, and the fact is that certain clubs simply have a more appealing brand. The vast majority of League fans, in a given NRL season, do not want to see Cronulla on a Friday night. Or any other currently mediocre team with little appeal.

I do believe that Brisbane has an unfair advantage, which is why a second team is needed in that city to provide some kind of competition for the abundance of elite juniors that emerge each year in that part of the country.

But if executives and supporters of Sydney clubs want a fairer competition, if they truly want to compete with Brisbane for national exposure, they have two choices- build an extremely competitive club with a large fan base, or call for further rationalization of Sydney clubs- a prospect most Sydney-based fans abhor.

Those crying foul over selections for TV games are kidding themselves if they think a full set schedule would cure their ills. In this case the ARLC would simply rate teams a year in advance based on the best available information and then allocate the highly-rated teams a majority of the prime slots.

Which is how it should be. Rewarding mediocrity is a recipe for more of that same mediocrity splashed across our television screens on a weekly basis. The NRL must avoid this proposed race to the bottom. The only ‘fair’ thing to do in this situation is to broadcast the best matches to the biggest audiences.

Anything less is detrimental to the health of the game.

Just because you live in brisbane does not mean that the highlight of every Friday night is watching the broncos! I cannot wait until this current unfair system is changed.

A bloke at work the other day told me that for every stadium of Broncos fans you can fill in Brisbane you could fill two that hate them. He was a Brothers fan from way back.

MG Burbank, And the money they get to do this comes from the sponsorships they get from being constantly on TV the only team in League's strongest city. Conveniently, it's also non-cap soft money. If you're interested in strengthening League, a second team in Brisbane is a no-brainer. If you're interested in maximising the success of the Brisbane Broncos Pty Ltd, then they have to remain the only team in Brisbane.

"if the Broncos are the most entertaining, appealing brand, they should get the nod." Entertaining to who? Broncos fans such as yourself? Did it occur to you that watching the Broncos ad nauseum is not entertaining to a Souths fan for example. Or that just maybe a Storm fan might find watching their side to be more "entertaining". This is one of the most ridiculous articles I've read on here for some time and your follow-up comments don't redeem you in any way. Please mods tear up his contract, I believe there's a vacancy of some sort with the Courier Mail.

Why, at this stage of the season, are the Broncos any more of a top 4 certainty than the Cowboys? That's right they're not. Furthermore, why would a second Brisbane team be assured of being a top 4 team? Again, they're not. Yet you argue that the best teams should get Friday night coverage whilst also claiming that Brisbane (be they the Broncos or an expansion team) deserves Friday Nights by default. All the while your article preaches the failings of tampering with the current system as it rewards the best teams. You don't by chance work for Channel 9 do you, rookie.

Do you talk in circles for fun? You're advocate keeping the status quo in one breathe, and in the next you claim that the best performing teams should get preference. The Broncos, topping the table or not, will always get Friday Night games. Souths, Parramatta and St. George will also get their fair share irrespective of performance. Canberra and Cronulla could be leading the table and still not get a look in. That is the current situation and it is certainly not performance based as you suggest.

Are you new at this MG? Because you're coming off like an uninformed one-eyed Queenslander/Broncos fan. If so I am right to take anything you say with a grain of salt. If not, then you should reconsider your day job. The Swans, Waratahs, Sydney FC, and the Kings are all Sydney teams are they not? The Shire being only 45 minutes from the Sydney CBD is part of Sydney also, is it not? Remember "Sydney has too many teams". I know you're a little slow rookie, but one may then suggest that residents of the Shire perhaps support the Swans, Waratahs, Sydney FC, and/or the Kings. Accordingly Cronulla does compete with said teams, yes? Or did you think all Swans, Warratahs, Sydney FC and Kings fans lived in the CBD? perhaps Centennial Park?

Worst article ever on this website. What is your deal MG Burbank? Too many persian rugs or mentally disturbed? In your blog you write things like "I often say that one of the elements we are gifted with as human beings upon entering the world is an acute sense of fairness" and "Rupert Murdoch and the rest of the Robber Barons – spend so much money buying politicians and creating fake “grassroots” movements like the Tea Party is because they understand perfectly the complaints and desires of the vast majority of the population in this country. They know all about the theft that’s taken place because they’re the ones who’ve benefited from it" But you support a News Ltd owned football team that cheats and produces no players of their own? You don't make sense as a person.

Hopefullly in the future they can further stimulate a bit of rugby league growth down in Melbourne considering Melbourne has over 4 million people now. Hopefully they can and this is dreaming have a another team in Melbourne, another 2 teams in Brisbane, another team in Auckland, and one in Perth, Adelaide and Wellington in NZ

Im from Cairns but am finding Friday night footy boring because the Broncos are boring to watch, how many superstars do they have now, Hodges, Thaiday and maybe a few others. Lockyer is gone and they are just not of the same calibre of team they were in the 90s or 00s. It would be great if we had another two teams in QLD just to spread the Friday night footy at 7.30 in QLD around as Titans or Cowboys are never on at 7.30pm Friday nights only the Broncos. A team Ipswich or Toowoomba or Sunshine Coast or even here in Cairns considering we are a 4 hour drive from Townsville and the Cowboys never play any first grade games up here only every now and then trial games.

Fair call about the crowds. The Titans should have gotten far more than they did. Rain or no rain, the prospect of seeing the next match free if the Titans lost was a good incentive to go. I'm a Cowboys fan so I'll always be biased towards them, but I can see why fans didn't turn up. The monsoonal rain that the area had over the week would have made it very difficult for the fans to get to the ground. We need to remember that there's no undercover seating at Dairy Farmers, and fans prefer to sit on the hill than in the stands. No one wants to sit on a hill when there's monsoonal rain turning the ground into mud.

You know your stuff MG Burbank. I've been saying this for years. My plan is to have all the Sydney clubs relegated to the NSW Cup and replaced with 4-5 super clubs: 2 in western Sydney, 1 in the north, 1 in the south and one representing the densely populated inner LGAs. But it cannot happen now because it'll help GWS Giants.

The Cowboys were one of the better teams for the bulk of 2011. They fell away over the last two months, but up until then they were inside the top four. Injury to Johnathon Thurston in SOO 3 derailed their season. For the second year in a row the Cowboys have defeated Brisbane at Lang Park. Not many teams can say they've done that. Put 42 points on Parramatta under monsoonal rain. Have a better squad than the Broncos. But I can understand why the Broncos get more games. The Broncos are the more popular team. The Broncos score bigger TV ratings in south-east Queensland than the Cowboys. North Queensland only has about 300,000 people. That's the main reason the Broncos are televised each Friday while the Cowboys are stuck to Saturday nights. The other reason is the Cowboys' fans travel from vast distances. It's hard for them to do this on a workday.

A good crowd at Lang Park provides a better atmosphere than a match at an 80% empty ANZ stadium.

A second Brisbane team will hurt the Lions and Reds. The NRL shouldn't pass up an opportunity to weaken its competitiors.

The Cowboys have a more complete squad than the Broncos. 1. Matty Bowen vs Josh Hoffman. Bowen is the better attacking player, but a country mile. He proved it during their match at Lang Park in Rnd 2. 2. Ashley Graham vs Gerald Beale Probably even, but the Cowboys have the option of bringing Fai Fai Loa in as cover. Fai Fai Loa is a better attacking player than Graham and Beale. 3. Brent Tate vs Jack Reed Fairly even, although Reed might have the upperhand at the moment, but only by virture of being injury free. Must be remembered that Tate was playing for Australia before his injury. Would Reed make the Australian team if he declared his allegiance to Australia? 4. Kane Linnet vs Justin Hodges Hodges wins this by virture of being the superior attacking player. By some marging too. 5. Antonio Winterstein vs Jharal Yow Yeh Fairly even contest. 6. Johnathon Thurston vs Corey Norman Thurston is the best halfback in the world and a natural five-eighth -- he began his career as at five-eighth. Norman is okay, but he's not an attacking genius like Thurston. 7. Ray Thompson vs Peter Wallace Ray Thomspon wins this battle. He has been the Cowboys' most consistent player all year, has a great kicking game, good vision, a good passing game, takes the line on and is an excellent defender. Wallace isn't much chop, as was evident in the Cowboys vs Broncos game at Lang Park. Thompson has a good chance of playing for Queensland one day. 8. Matthew Scott vs Ben Hannant Scott is the best prop in the world. 9. Aaron Payne vs Andrew McCullough Payne isn't as good as he was in 2005, but he's still creating line breaks. Probably a fairly even match. 10. James Tamou vs Petero Civinoceva Have you seen the metres that Tamou gets everytime he takes a hit-up? It always takes 3 or 4 people to stop him, but he's always wins the play-the-ball so that the Cowboys are on the front foot for the next play. Can offload the ball and puts in some really big hits. Petero is good, but is ageing and not able to change the complexion of a game like Tamou does. 11. Gavin Cooper vs Alex Glenn I'll give this one to Glenn, but only just, because, Cooper has formed a decent partnership with Thurston on the leftside of the field that has yieled the Cowboys many points. 12. Glenn Hall vs Sam Thaiday I'll give this one to Thaiday because he is so dangerous when he plays just inside Hodges. 13. Corey Parker/Ben Te'o vs Dallas Johnson. Fairly even. Bench. Segeyaro has Hunt beat as the interchange dummyhalf. Ashton Sims and Taumalolo create more tackle busts than the Broncos' counterparts. Cowboys still have Tariq Sims to come back. Robert Lui and Michael Morgan can step in at halfback/five-eighth if Thurston and Thompson succumb to injury. Broncos are pretty bare in the halves.

I think the point Pete75 is making is that the Storm stifle their opponent's attack. That makes 50% of the game slow and tedious. If you want to see an exciting brand of football then watch the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls. Their new fullback is a Storm product called Loxley. He links up with the half-back, Fauid, in a way that's similare to Cronk and Slater. Their dummyhalf, Granville, also links up with them. On Sunday I saw them put on 84 points against the CQ Capras. Some pretty good tries were scored the previous week when they played Tweed Heads.

There are a lot of rugby league fans in Brisbane who do not support the Broncos. Those fans aren't members of the Broncos. Nor do they go to many NRL games. Adding a new team into the greater Brisbane area would give these fans an incentive to go to more NRL games [of the new team] and become a ticketed member [of the new team]

MGB "The Broncos have to compete with soccer, AFL, union and anything else the city might throw up. Cronulla, by comparison, does not have a union team, an AFL team, an A-league franchise or pretty much anything else." Is that a serious comment? You're inferring that the Broncos have it harder than Cornulla to draw crowds..?!! Brisbane have the easiest ride of any club in Australia...a one-city team in the middle of League heartland. Forget other codes, Brisbane is primarily a League town and they don't compete with any other NRL clubs...Cronulla have 9 to contend with. Don't get me wrong, the Sharks crowds are terrible (the fact that they had a crowd rise of 14% says nothing other than 2010 was a REALLY appalling year). The Broncos are similar to the WCE in the AFL, having the probable support of 1.5M people in their home state. That's an advantage any club would kill for.
