Channel Ten gets serious about F1

By The Radical / Roar Rookie

Network Ten has showed the first signs that it is finally taking Formula One seriously, with the news that coverage will be simulcast live on their main channel in prime time, for the Bahrain Grand Prix on April 22.

This move has been a long time coming, with ratings strong in recent years on Ten’s secondary digital channel ONE HD.

It also means that those without access to digital television can now enjoy Formula One at the same time.

On the back of a healthy 1.4 million viewers tuning into last weekend’s season opening Australian Grand Prix, it is nice to know that Ten don’t care simply for the local event.

Their next move will be to eradicate the despised commercial breaks, often occurring in the middle of a race defining moment, but for now at least, the news that the network is brave enough to place the number one motorsport in the world on their primary channel is a step in the right direction.

We can now look forward to the analysis from V8 Supercar and Carrera Cup driver Craig Baird and motorcycle racer Daryl Beattie alongside Greg Rust at this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix.

EDITOR’S NOTE: On advice from Network Ten, The Roar would like to clarify that for European races during the 2012 Formula One season, races will be shown on Ten, but not on ONEHD, and will be broadcast on delay into Adelaide and Perth markets from 9.30pm local time. All qualifying will remain live on ONEHD, nationwide.

Thanks for the tip I WILL watch the race the next day just to see it in high def! Australian TV companies do not understand how bad their standard definition programs look on modern TV's

After all the hype of when they started 1 HD about sport in HD. I bought a large screen HDTV to enjoy HD motor racing as it looks so much better than SD. Now they are showing the main races of Motogp and F1 on channel 10 SD and some movie on the HD channel , makes me feel like i have gone back 10 years, looks crap in comparison to HD. I struggle to watch anything in SD these days as it looks so bad. I'm not going to wait for the following day to see it on the HD channel. This is a major step backwards and they have lost me as i only wan't it in HD and will find other sources.

Bottom line is F1 and MotoGP look crap on SD. This is a big FAIL by Channel 10. Live HD broadcast for all Australian states. Is this too much to ask for? Apparantley so according to the 'Home of Motorsport'

They are broadcasting Canadian, Abu Dhabi, USA rounds of Moto GP or F1 will be LIVE on TEN and probably simulcast on ONE for WA,SA,NT viewers and F1 Qualifying on TEN will be delayed and possibly LIVE for those Rounds of Canadian/Abu Dhabi/Texas which is good that they still broadcast Rounds on Delay on TEN

Well done TEN for actually listening to your viewers while other networks won't do it so I am giving TEN credit for doing that but I am still wondering what will happen to the Qualifying on TEN. They should still air Canadian GP LIVE on TEN as well as USA Rounds Races LIVE as well on TEN by being it Simulcast to ONE. TEN has got viewers back in a better position to compete with other Networks now all we need is to get Eastern States to get TEN to shot the Race in HD instead of been on ONE. The big question what's happening for Non-European Rounds for AEST is it going to be LIVE or Delayed? or TEN is going to air News in favour of F1 or Moto GP

I cannot believe that channel ten have now shafted Perth viewers and won't be showing f1 races live. You just lost your Perth audience!

I agree Pete, we are also F1 fans living in Perth and can't believe the rubbish coverage here (having moved from Christchurch recently) The constant advertisements and awful commentary make for a painful two hours. Was very disappointed to read this mornings TV listing and see that unless I want to try and stay awake until midnight to see the end I'll be recording it and hoping that I don't hear the result before I get a chance to watch it!! I would rather have it on pay TV!!! I was of the impression that for a small fee for a top box anyone could get HD channels if they don't have an HD TV??? Come on Channel 10 lets give those of us that aren't AFL fans some decent programme time!!!

I live in Perth as well and it angers that as far as the east is concerned we don't matter or seem to exist yet Daniel Ricciardo, a West Aussie, has a seat with Torro Rosso. I thought HD was the way of the future? I thought it was to compete against Foxtel? I agree with William (April 17 2012 @ 2:10pm) because with analogue going I thought the word would be that if you want to see it, buy the HD box so you can? I thought One was the sport channel where you can watch live sport. Channel 10 needs to come clean and tell us all the real reason for the change. I suspect if Ten and One had the AFL coverage we wouldn't be seeing One becoming a sister station to 7mate.

There is a situation where F1 or MotoGP is not on at 9.30 so that means it will go LIVE to ONE or do we still have to put up with a 2 hour delay for MotoGP and F1 this is for Germany MotoGP and British GP which MotoGP is on at 7pm AWST and 8pm AWST for F1. I hope by that time it will be all shafted to ONE for LIVE Races instead of putting up with 2 hour delay. They better be careful once the Tour De France comes to SBS which is going to dominate TEN and come 2nd in the Ratings as we have seen it all before because of Cadel Evans

"Channel Ten gets serious about F1"? That would be one of the least-accurate headlines I've seen in a while (and I'm including rags like the Herald Sun and the Daily Telegraph). Ten have shat on F1 fans from a great height. It is ludicrous that in 2012 we are unable to enjoy the F1 in HD. It's outrageous that viewers who do not live in the eastern states can't even see it live in FTA. Anyone who recently bought the F1 live-timing app is going to be rightly p!ssed off at this. I am so annoyed by this that I am sufficiently motivated to boycott any company which advertises with Ten during the F1 broadcast. I will also look at cancelling this household's insurance policies with Shannons.

Channel 10 getting serious about F1??? HAH. For us West Aussies we get a lower quality broadcast that starts AFTER the race has finished! And 'petefromperth' this is what they posted on their Facebook page: "Ten Sport We are wanting to bring F1 to the widest audience possible, which is why it is on Ten. This allows all Australians to access the Formula One coverage in a consistent time slot every Sunday night. Sorry, guys. This is locked in. 2 hours ago · Like" I certainly hope it is NOT locked in, or they at least keep it live on ONE in all regions.

That sums it up beautifully; keep the pressure up on Ch 10 and who knows they may see sense eventually - they are already saying they understand the situation and are "working on it". More action less talk please TV executives.

ONE has been doing a great job. That was the whole idea of having a secondary channel - so that people who want to see these events LIVE can and those who want to watch regular shows can. Secondary channel doesn't mean second rate. Why should the west be excluded from LIVE F1 races - especially as one of our own Daniel Ricciardo is racing? It's great that Channel Ten are making F1 a focus but I thought they already had by making available to ALL of Australia LIVE on ONE. Please Channel TEN change it back so everyone can be happy.

I have found some other news regards about MotoGP and F1 is that ONE will show Moto3 and Moto2 Race Day LIVE throughout this year. Can TEN match it by broadcasting Moto2 and Moto3 straight after LIVE Coverage of MotoGP

ONE's coverage of the FIM MotoGP will still be shown LIVE and Exclusively for Qualifying Sessions while SBS has confirmed that FA Cup Final will be LIVE Nationally. We got to see European Rounds LIVE at 7.30PM while this is even more disaster its on at 9.30PM why not try Bahrain F1 LIVE Nationally and see how that works if it doesn't get up to their expectations it should be shown at 9.30PM with ONE broadcasting Race Day LIVE with TEN overlapping at 9.30PM of Pre-Race till 0000 End of Race with Post Race Interviews to follow it

ONE is still going to broadcast Live Qualifying of MotoGP and Formula One. I wonder if Moto2 and Moto3 will still be shown Live on ONE. Does this still include the Australasia Coverage of being at 930PM with no Race on ONE or is this only for European Rounds as ONE has been doing since R1-R3. What is the point of having it on TEN when in 2yrs time there will no Analogue so why change it now. The Race should be shown Live on TEN (AEST) with Live Coverage on ONE for AWST and ACST for both Race Day and Qualifying Sessions.
