Bulls vs Reds: Super Rugby live scores, blog

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

The Bulls and Reds will attempt to get their Super Rugby campaigns back on track when they clash at Loftus Versveld at 2.05 AEDT Sunday. Both teams are coming off defeats, with the Bulls losing to weeks ago to the Blues, and the Reds surrendering a 17-point lead in losing to the Sharks.

The Reds will have their backs against the wall from the get go, with being forced to field their fourth choice flyhalf, as well as being without Digby Ioane, arguably the best wing in the world, who starts to serve a five-week suspension for a spear tackle last weekend.

The tussle between Francois Hougaard and Will Genia is as mouthwatering as it gets. These two must be the two best scrumhalves on the planet, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

The pack that is able to provide the better foundation and go forward ball will probably go a long way towards settling this particular duel.

The Bulls have said in the media this week that they plan to get into the faces of the Reds, and will try and dominate with the typical Bulls structured, conservative approach backed up by aggressive defence.

Morne Steyn will not have an offset with the boot like he did against the Blues in a hurry again.

The Reds will attempt to run at the Bulls at every opportunity, but will come up short. The Bulls to win convincingly by about 10 points.

Was last week an aberration for Ewen McKenzie’s men? Find out from 2.05am AEDT as we cover the match with live scores and a blog and if you’re watching, give us a shout in the space below.

granville ;agree with you and DEEZ i thought selections and tactics were flawed. yes GENIA is playing poorly his defence is static and selfish imo .in horwills defence it must be difficult when the vice captain is putting in less than a rookie.and some forwards are out of form or out of their depth. this is not about injuries anymore than other teams but more about selectional tactics and coaching commitment in the players.

Didn't see the Brumbies game so can't comment. However, it's about time they started to perform!

Lance is a damn good 10. Don't understand why he didn't start and have a specialist centre at 13. I guess we will never know now with that ankle injury. Davies has to go. Don't understand his appeal. Fast but so incredibly useless in the contact - attack and defence. Always been the case. Taps, Shipperley, Hanson are stepping up. Can't really say that of anybody else. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

CATTLEDOG,this was a 8 try rout and if you watched the game you would agree the reds were fortunate the bulls didnt finish off 4 more in the first half.so forget kaplan and the tmo and focus on your mate taylor whose defence has leaked 15 tries in 5 games. and in reply the reds have scored 7 tries..So forget also the TMO and zero in on the perth game with the force. the brumbies showed what a good coach and culture can achieve ;didnt they look well drilled and disciplined against highlanders.the reds defenders looked like boys amongst men and the selection shoddy.

agree with Horwill's performance both as a player and as a leader, he's way behind the locks position in the Wallabies, i think at the moment Pyle, Jones, Carter, Dogulass, Sharpe and Mumm are infront. Genia is having a shocking season, the pack was just pathetic couldnt even man up........

Ah not the best eh! Towel was chucked in after 70 minutes. Another bad injury it looked like to Lance. Jeez. S. Faingaa had a nightmare 20 minutes and poor old Murphy exposed but apart from that no real meltdowns.

Sadly have to agree. Forwards got manhandled - seemed to be going into tackles high, then getting driven back in the two-man tackles. After this started happening on a regular basis, some more tactical kicking to play field position was probably warranted, but they persisted on trying to run it and without the forward parity kept turning over ball. Very disappointed in a few guys I normally like, such as Robinson, Higginbotham (until the last 20 min) and Schatz. One guy I thought did step (to add to your list of Shipperley and Frisby) was Jono Lance - only Red to tackle effectively throughout. Was very sad to see him go down - I won't be surprised if he's out for the season with that ankle. Other point I'll add is that I was particularly disappointed by Horwill - aside from being a non-factor around the field for most of the game, I have to place blame with him as captain for letting his troops give up the ghost. Really sad to see the team fall apart like the old Reds of 07/08. Sad day to be a QLDer

It's going to take a fair bit of character to recover from this loss. If they're good enough, they will. Otherwise, look at next season. The Bulls played like a team possessed and I would argue they would have beaten anyone that evening. Nevertheless, the Reds did not man up and although a huge fan of Matty Taylor, he needs to tighten this defence, even with a virtual new back line. Murphy was a disappointment, however, they will need to persist somewhat with him. His options and defence were both poor. Very often, it takes just a small incident or bounce of the ball to change the momentum and the Bulls try before half time was one such incident. Will be interested to hear the reports on the TMO's advice to Kaplan, who was his pedantic self. What should have been a relieving penalty to the Reds coming up to half time, resulted in a try to the Bulls. Whilst Kaplan should have been across this, the TMO's advice I think swayed the decision, which although not incorrect by law, should have included the advice that the player played the ball a second time, which is illegal. That said, I doubt it would have made a huge difference, but we'll never know. Just need to have the TMO's understand the value of the technology they have available. A difficult task in Perth for the Reds this week. A third loss on the trot may well prove disastrous and no doubt the Force will be baying for their blood. It's time for the senior players to stand up and be counted...along with some more judicious selections from a man we have come to respect for this dark art alone! Can't afford Link to get a dose of the 'Dingos' :)

I said before the season started that the Tahs would top the Aussie conference, and nothing I have seen has made me change my mind. Brumbies are playing so well, but I think injuries at the back end of the season will cruel them. The Reds are gone, you simply don't get 60 points put on you, and come back to win the comp. The return of Quade and Digby will be too late. As for the Crusaders, I know they always start slowly, but they struggled to put away a brave Cheetahs team, that old Saders team would have put 50points on. Chiefs versus Bulls final? I am a Stormers Fan, but I think the Bulls will smash us this weekend. The Bulls are looking angry.

OJ ask the same question to Pat Lam with his team bristling with ABs. No doubt Reds were smashed though.

katzilla;it starts with illdiscipline in durban after ioanes stupid tackle cost them the game and culminates in abyssmal defence in pretoria with faulty selections and combinations, coupled with strange tactics.the young players like shipperley and frisby are standing up;why didnt frisby start after great game against sharks and have genia at ten.the so called stars in the reds have a lot to say apparently in the running of the team but havent fronted this season.

Well that was a painful game to watch. I couldn't work out if the Bulls were playing really well or if the Reds were just poor and decided it was probably both. Murphy looked way out of his depth. Lance and Tapuai were the best for the Reds and Lance has been added to the injury ward. I have no idea why McKenzie started with Faingaa and Daley when Slipper and Hanson had been playing so much better - Faingaa lost possession in 3 of his runs before getting replaced / injured after 30 mins. Schatz and Higginbotham were okay but need to do more, they need to step up with the Reds playing so poorly. The Force will do them in Perth I reckon, they're so low on confidence.

Reds will be very lucky if they haven't endured the biggest hiding of the super rugby season. How does it even happen to a defending champion team?
