To me, if Brad is successful, it looks like he could work in well with Mick Byrnes long term plan. Certainly the Reds are likely to be the fittest Aus Super Rugby side if Brad pushes them as he pushed himself. They definitely won’t be showing up to Wallaby camp requiring basic fitness training. Good luck to him, I might even be tempted to come down off the range to Brissie to watch a game!

Thorn to be wild as new Reds coach

No I don’t think your clutching at all Fionn, I too have been thinking that there is something about the way Hodge runs that reminds me of Strling – and that’s no bad thing!!

Why the number on Israel Folau’s back doesn’t matter

Harry, I know I’m late to the party on this one but thanks for a brilliant read. So often these days I come here, read the articles and leave. This, like much of your work is truly noteworthy. Well done!

A Saffa ramble

I thought Simmons was ok apart from his ridiculous play when Cowan crossed. If we have Simmons, Horwill & Higgers as jumpers then we should be able to play Hodgo & Hooper 6&7. Maybe it would help Fardy find his mojo coming off the bench against tiring opponents for a couple of tests.

Go 10, I’ll even promise to watch ‘Australia’s next top singing model chef’ if it will make this happen. Unlike many rugby lovers my budget just doesn’t stretch to Foxtel.

Network Ten wants Super Rugby

Digger, I feel your pain. Saturday night I was stuck in a dinner party with quasi intellectuals. Every time my phone snuck out under the table to check the Reb’s game, a sharp elbow to the ribs followed. Of course that wasn’t as painful as checking the score!

Hurricanes and weddings don't mix

Anecdotally, I have an uncle who played soccer at a high level in Wales as a young man in the late ’40s and early ’50’s. You don’t have to be Einstein to work out what happens when a waterlogged leather ball connects with to your scone at speed. As a result he suffered from terrible migraines and other head problems for the rest of his life post soccer.

Headache looming for Aussie rugby codes

I too have had thoughts on this subject andI wonder if it has anything to do with a lack of physical activity in general. It is well documented in the health literature that all of us, kids especially are becoming more sedentary. Young guys today just haven’t hardened their bodies to the same extent as previous generations by the time they reach 1st class cricket.

For example: Harold Larwood (bodyline) was a mine pit worker, he had worked physically hard from the age of fourteen, so by the time he reached 1st class cricket muscle, bone and sinew were hardened to withstand the rigours of bowling. Then, as Doozle suggests above, natural selection had probably already culled a few through the rigours of hard living.

Perhaps we should be getting all our young talent doing more physical work (not just gym) to help ‘work harden’ them. How this would be managed would be the challenge:)

Could protection of young bowlers actually be hurting them?

RK, go the gold pants (flares), thin the hair out add some removable freckles/flaking skin and you’ll be the complete ‘Gold Member’ 🙂

Wallabies team named to play Lions in Third Test

Hi Chivas,

I agree with you on a number of things:
You’re right KPM is one contributor, my poor attempt to be diplomatic 😉
I agree also that West Aussies don’t care much for League (just like the other southern states), so it is a shame that a stronger side wasn’t named, but diminishing your chances to beat an under strength Tah’s outfit, when it’s likely the Lions would win convincingly anyway, it’s not good percentage rugby (now they better beat the Tahs 🙂 ). I do agree too that fans are rightfully upset, particularly if you’ve bought tickets expecting the full show.

As for peeing from Victoria, well while I love my home state I’ve been living in QLD for the past couple of years, but can’t change the handle. It gets a little overbearing up here at this time of year 😉

SPIRO's Lions Diary: Foley does Australian rugby a disservice

Sorry KPM we will have to agree to disagree:
1. No it’s not cowardly, it’s pragmatic.
2. If you think Foley is the only decision maker, then you are still guilty of your own prejudicial view of the man.
3. The ARU are well known for their poor approach to the Force. Many of the same administrators at NSW and Aust. level that you regularly take aim at would love to see the Force (and Foley) gone. The West Aussie’s have just shown their contempt for the East Coast admin.
4. Good manager’s (of any organisation) recognise their own weaknesses and hire assistants that will complement them. Meehan and Foley apparently have a good history together. I’d say they work with each other, not as you say with Foley as the puppet. Again, I say put your own prejudice aside and look at the situation from another angle.
5. Think of the game this way. Would Manchester U, field their strongest team in a friendly against the Socceroo’s if they were about to play Man City or another top FA team 4 days later…. No. If that’s the case, I’m still with Foley.

SPIRO's Lions Diary: Foley does Australian rugby a disservice

I Love this plan, this is something that I would part with my hard earned for. Does anyone have the SANZAR hotline number 🙂

SPIRO's Lions Diary: Foley does Australian rugby a disservice

Sorry, but am I the only one who is on Foley’s side here. A few points:
1. Give the Lions too many strong hit outs and they will be match hardened with established combinations, while the Wallabies will have been through a couple of weeks of drills. Advantage Lions.
2. I have to disagree with those that cast the blame completely at Foley. If the ARU and the board of the Force had a problem with fielding a second string side, I reckon they would have lent on Foley.
3. The Lions game is a nothing game for the Force. Of the money that the ARU will make for this tour the majority of it will be given to the East Coast teams. It has been well bemoaned on this site the pittance $$ and poor concessions that have hampered the Force’s development. If I was in the Force’s shoes I’d be thumbing my nose at the ARU on this one.
4. It amazes me that certain Roarer’s will accuse everyone who has a problem with Robbie Deans that they are anti Deans and they have a bias that means their opinions are not valued. Yet when it comes to Michael Foley, the same pro Deans contributor/s think that Foley is the World’s worst Rugby coach and that it is Steve Meehan only who is leading to the Force’s better showing this year. HELLO can’t you remember what the Waratah’s management has been like for the past decade. Every coach in that time has coached a similar style of Football, had problems with an interfering board and have had player selection and game plan thrust upon them from on high. Why is it that someone like Ewan McKenzie can develop from a boring forward orientated coach into an expansive coach, but when Michael Foley moves into an environment that allows him to develop similarly, it is all somebody else. Remove your own bias please!
5. Finally while the Force aren’t playing for a finals berth, they could conceivably get two wins in their final two games, leapfrog the Rebels and no longer be a bottom 3 side. Pride is what is at stake here, team pride, not just Foley’s

How Gallen wasn’t sent off is beyond me, ref must be afraid he won’t be able to get out of the stadium if he cards a Blue.

Wallabies Scott Higginbotham ruled out of Lions Tour, rugby for 2013

Gotta say it’s been a long time since I watched a football match, really glad I stumbled onto SBS tonight, thrilling stuff. Well played to the Socceroos….so close. I’ll definitely tune in for the next match. Cheers for the commentary 🙂

Japan vs Socceroos: 2014 World Cup Qualifier live scores, blog

I agree with the drop kick idea and have thought for sometime that this is something that could be borrowed from…..AFL (ie: removal of place kick). But the following would be included in my suggestion:

Outside the 22 and it’s a drop kick only, 3 points for a goal and if missed, whether the ball goes dead or not the infringing team drop kicks from their goal line handing possession straight back to the attacking team.

Inside the 22 place kick with time limit

Scrap the penalty goal please!

AAC: the man for this moment

Always was, always will be an outside centre, it just took Connolly/Deans 6 years to figure it out. I’ll always remember being at the 2010 test in Melbourne, the AB’s were giving us a right touch up (again), but it was AAC who managed to add some respectability to what was an otherwise ordinary display. Others see a pedestrian player at best and a has been who never had it at worst, I see a guy who has been one of the Wallabies most reliable players through a very lean period (against the AB’s)

AAC: the man for this moment

J2, My thoughts on this have changed a few times, but maybe it’s as simple as that over the past couple of years the Reb’s have tightened up most aspects of their game and this season they have been in the game more often than not. Perhaps as the team and coach continue to develop, the restart will be the next aspect of their game to shore up. If they do this, then it seems to me they will start to win more than they lose. (Oh, and trade a couple of back rowers for a couple of good props 🙂 )

Rebels score Super win over Stormers

Yep, I could live with that team. Shame I haven’t been paying attention lately, otherwise I might have had a vote…

Your Wallabies XV unveiled!

Yep, AFL balls are definitely leather only, each ball is still closed (final few stitches) by hand as well apparently.

Force heartbreak in rugby loss to Chiefs

My guess for Insider this week is Wil himself or David Pockock. Either way it’s great to get this alternate view than what is usually written in the media.

If what Insider says is true about holding WG back or landing on him to disrupt his game and reduce his influence, perhaps it’s in the Wallabie’s interests to develop a tagger’role for one of the loose forwards (or locks) to ensure that this sort of play is reduced.
