Why Ange is the best option for Melbourne Victory

By Daniel Quinn / Roar Pro

After Melbourne Victory decided not to offer interim coach Jim Magilton the full-time position, the biggest coaching job in the A-League is now available. If Brisbane Roar’s Ange Postecoglou is not on the top of the list, he should be.

Ange is the perfect candidate. Not only is Postecoglou Melbourne-bred, after moving to the Victorian capital aged five from Greece, he is also a legend in Melbourne football. The 46-year-old has won two NSL titles as a player and two as coach all with South Melbourne. He is the only man to be involved in all four South Melbourne NSL titles.

If the former defender joins Melbourne Victory, he will narrow the gap between A-League and NSL fans. His appointment would bring supporters of South across to the Victory and the A-League, and would also be met with support from the football-loving Melbourne Greek community. Both of these outcomes would definitely be appreciated by FFA.

The former Australia U-20 coach is one of the best, if not the best coach in the country. Aside from boosting the Victory’s crowds, he would give the Melbourne club a great opportunity of returning to the pinnacle of Australian football.

Postecoglou has done a brilliant job at Brisbane, re-shaping the club by changing training regimes, replacing the old with the young and also playing an attractive and successful brand of football.

Victory is arguably the biggest club in the country and they thrive on success which Postecoglou will most likely bring.

The time is right for Ange to come to Melbourne. The majority of the squad are ageing and a number of players are out of contract so the time is now to re-shape.

Matthew Kemp, Billy Celeski, Danny Allsopp, Grant Brebner plus many more have had their time in the A-League and need to move on. Postecoglou would be a perfect coach to move those on and use his immense recruitment skills to re-build the squad.

The signings of Thomas Broich and Mohamed Adnan shows Postecoglou’s eye for recruitment.

While there are other coaches on the market, Ange is the best bet. Graham Arnold is tipped to join Sydney FC and the rumours of Italian legend Gianfranco Zola joining are uncertain.

But you may ask why would Postecoglou leave Brisbane when he has two years left on his current deal?

Postecoglou is reportedly unhappy in Brisbane. According to a former unnamed teammate of Postecoglou, the coach is not happy with the new Indonesian owners.

This is the not the first time Postecoglou has been interested in a Melbourne job. Reportedly before joining Brisbane Roar, Postecoglou was very interested in joining Melbourne Heart, who at the time hadn’t appointed John van ‘t Schip, while Postecoglou was unemployed.

Postecoglou will be interested in leaving Brisbane but one question remains. The new owners are reportedly going to offer Postecoglou a new deal but can they convince their current coach to extend his deal? Bear in mind the Victory are likely to match any wage increase for the former Socceroo.

While a decision is unlikely to be made public soon, considering the A-League finals and possible Champions League campaign, it would not be out of the question to see Ange in the navy blue and white next season.

I'm not sure where this idea came from that Ange was not happy in Brisbane, the facts as I see it is that he is being given exactly what he wants from the Bakries, and his family issues that are complete heresay are the defining factors in everyone's argument on why he's moving to MVFC. Fact: Ange has complete control of footballing operations at BR, and the opportunity to be a footballing ambassador to the other Asian sides the Bakries own. People keep saying 'oh but the prospect of fixing MVFC is so tantalising to someone of Ange's character', it's complete bull to base an argument on that just as it is to say that a sick father and a mildly homesick family are deciding factors. I have a degree in journalism and in my eyes, this story is completely sensationalist and a throwback to the bad old days. Your whole argument is based on he said she said crap that is not sourced and not valid. Congrats though, you managed to spark a whole heap of comments, which was obviously the aim of the article. /thread

Im a South Melbourne fan, if MV signed Ange it wouldnt make a difference to me, why? because im a South fan, nothing to do with Ange ( who i highly respect), nothing to do with ethnicity, i have my team and thats that, im surprised these articiles didnt pop up for Durakovic who is also a South legend. I'd like to see Ange stay in Brisbane, when he returned from Greece neither of the Melbourne clubs were keen on him, Brisbane took the punt on him and i'd like to see him stay there and continue to torment both melbourne clubs....its nothing short of what they deserve, they knew all about Ange and his credentials in the nsl and still didnt take him seriously. If either MV or Heart had any brains they would give someone like Phil Stubbins a chance...he has been around the vic football scene for decades before going to Adelaide as an assistant...or does an interstate team have to take a punt on him as well?? they never learn down here.

I apologize for mentioning about Ange's personal life. People learn everyday, and feedback, whether if it's good or not, helps people learn. So thank you for pointing it out. I was just telling the fans what I have told. Yes the Melbourne Heart part probably didn't need to be in there but I think the part about Ange's father being ill is pretty important to the article, regarding MV coaching gig.

I am not saying every fan is Greek I am saying fans of South who love Ange MAY come across to support both, if they don't already.

When I wrote this I didn't mean to say (Editors fault) that All "Greek" fans will go along to watch a Greek coach. What I meant to say is fans that love Ange from South Melbourne days may come and watch.

Daniel, as an immediate member of Ange's family, I commentd earlier about your publishing of our personal stuff. Obviously, anything deemed detrimental to your 'opinion' is not allowed to be posted. Shame really, because you have thrown objectivity/freedom out the window. You are an embarassment to your 'proffession" and should keep your focus on learning better tradecraft. The fact that Ange's father is ill is nobody's business, and in fact you have caused the family unnecessary and unwanted attention. And as I mentioned earlier, your other personal comment is irrelevant and erroneous. Check your facts.

It is disgraceful journalism to mention Ange's personal affairs, stick to football. He will make his own decision and I hope he stays in Brisbane because I respect what has he has done here, though it is still a work in progress.

The second goal Wellington scored gave me the worst sinking feeling, everything going wrong, we were losing out in the midfield and under attack. Substitution and formation change turned things around, though. So many spurned chances! Everyone certainly got their money's worth. I would really like to think this will push our crowd average up next year.

What drama. The 1st half was extremely mundane but, straight from the 2nd half kick off - the game exploded. When you went 1-2 down, I thought the dream was over for Perth - especially, since Smeltzy was having a shocker. Five terrific goals and the final 75 minutes were edge-of-the-seat tension. I reckon Perth Glory can go all the way and win the Championship ... what a difference to a few months ago when the fans were booing the team off the park. Funny game, football.

Was up at the back and the sea of arms spreading out in front of me was amazing - even Left Side was getting into it and they think that the only appropriate way to enjoy a match is with your arms folded and a frown!

Thanks for the input robster. You're obviously not a fan of the A-League and, for that, I'm very grateful. Now, how about you go off and enjoy whatever insignificant little sport tickles your fancy.

you twit. the 1950s called, they want their soccer-hate attitude returned. Your ignorance over HK and his career is simply the start of the mistakes in your comment.

I would like to know why new football should bother trying to mend bridges with Old Soccer? The few keyboard warriors on here and Facebook are so adamant in their hatred of the A-League, why should any football fan cut them some slack and push our current leaders to introduce anything that benefits OS? I have a hard time feeling anything but contempt for a group of people who mis-represent the past in online propaganda pieces that Chairman Mao would be proud of, but who seem to want to see the downfall not only of my team, but the very league it plays in.

Whats the point in the end? Kewell is a has been and was never an actual good player, or maybe he was for 2 seasons but let it go. He sucks. The A league is the worst thing I've ever seen- clunky play, poor skill, a bunch of amateurs
