West Indies vs Australia 3rd Test, Day 2: Live scores, commentary

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

Australia will look to resume from a difficult 7/212 on the first day in the third Test match against West Indies at Dominica. Join us for live scores and commentary from 1.00am AEST.

On a track that spun and bounced disconcertingly for the Australian batsmen, Shane Shillingford almost bowled through from one end and made life difficult for the opponents.

Some of the battles that Shillingford had against the Australian batsmen were eerily familiar to their plays against Harbhajan Singh in that famous 2001 series.

Ricky Ponting looked out of sorts against spin then and a decade on, there was a sense of a cat on a hot tin roof about him. Unsurprisingly enough, he gloved one off Shillingford to a fielder close-in.

So did Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey. In fact, Hussey’s reaction to his dismissal was telling for a game that is only one day old – an off-spinner from Shillingford bounced off his gloves and he wrung his hands in pain after he knew he was caught!

Shillingford ended on 4/77 in 34 overs with the unbeaten eighth wicket stand between Matthew Wade and Mitchell Starc being a saviour.

Still, on a track that has so much bounce in it, a score of 250 in the first innings may not be an under-par score. Australia will obviously aim for much more.

West Indies will not want the opponents to get to beyond 250 though, and the keen tussle between the bat and the ball should continue in the first session. It is the West Indian first innings that could be a crucial factor in the game.

We will bring you the coverage throughout this third Test match of the series between West Indies and Australia from Barbados and hope to receive your opinions as the action unfolds from 1.00am AEST.

End of the day's play then and Australia are miles ahead at this stage. With only two days gone, Australia were propped up to 328 in their first innings thanks to a superb Matthew Wade century. He was helped on his way by Mitchell Starc and Ben Hilfehaus. The wagging tail helped Australia to a score which was around 100 more than what West Indies would have wanted them to be restricted to. Then, West Indies got to 1/62 before collapsing to the spin of Nathan Lyon. Warner also took a wicket as West Indies end the day on 8/165. They have saved the follow-on but to save the game, they may need a miracle. That's it from me, I will be back tomorrow with the third day's play.

Four! Four to Rampaul and he is trying to turn on the heat for the West Indian side, late in the day. Cut away through the covers off the bowing of Hilfy gets him a four. 8/164. In case you are wondering this stand is already worth 44.

A couple of runs off the Hilfenhaus over and a couple of overs to go now. 8/159 in 63.

Cowan's off the field...that was a mighty blow.

Clarke continues to bowl and that is some really poor stuff. He has bowled a couple so short that they have been easily pulled away for runs. And then he pitches one right to the bat, full-toss, in such a manner that Rampaul sweeps it hard into the short-leg! Cowan's down and out for the count, his hand needs attention...

Four! They have suddenly had an injection of IPL into their blood, lofted the ball over the bowler for another boundary, this time by Rampaul. 8/150 in 60.

Four! Short again and Chanderpaul cuts it away to the boundary yet again! He has moved on to 31, 52 short of 10k runs in Tests... ...this is Michael Clarke bowling by the way now.

Warner does get some turn and almost has a wicket, an lbw appeal negated, reviewed and found hitting the bat first. And then a couple of boundaries to up the tempo, first Rampaul pulls a short one away to the fence and Chanders cuts Lyon away to the fence as well. West Indies have saved the follow-on but are miles away from the Aussie total. Six overs still to be bowled. We are doing overtime here. 8/139

It is Dave Warner coming on now. He took the wicket of Darren Bravo in the first over he bowled this innings.

A maiden from Starc to Chanderpaul, who believes in not shielding the lower-order, but playing out the way he always plays. 18 off 76 balls for him!

OUT! Bowled him! First-ball duck for the star of the bowling, Shillingford's gone to Starc and West Indies are eight down. At 8/120, they are still nine away from saving the follow-on.

OUT! Gone, run-out! Sammy's lost his wicket to a run-out and that is number seven for Australia. So if the pitch wasn't doing its job, the West Indian batsmen are throwing it away! This time it is a silly run-out, drives a full-toss and goes for a single that was never there. Direct hit sees the batsman short! 7/120. Can they do what Australia did after they had lost seven.

Maiden from Lyon to Chanders, who has now faced 63 balls for his 15.

Sammy gets a couple to his name and moves on to nine in that Starc over. It is a surprise he has not gone bang-bang so far. On this pitch, it makes more sense to play your natural game.

Something from Chanders, guides it through third-man for three. That is a risky shot with so much turn on this pitch! 6/115.

Mitchell Starc comes in and sends down a maiden. 17 overs still to be bowled. 6/110.

At drinks in the final session, West Indies have crawled up to 6/110, with Chanderpaul batting 10 from 54 balls. Three wickets for Lyon.

Lyon now has three wickets to his name. And in that semi-finals, Barcelona have wasted an opportunity to go 3-1 up. Messi's missed a penalty! Can the West Indies do the unbelievable too?
