Stephen Kearney: Dead man walking

By Curtis Woodward / Expert

Stephen Kearney’s critics have been sharpening their knives for weeks as the Parramatta Eels continue to crumble. On Friday night, the Eels were horrendous against Canterbury, losing 46-12.

If Kearney’s head wasn’t already on the chopping block, he damn sure is in the kitchen.

Let’s get one thing straight. This is one of the worst Parramatta sides we have ever seen. The Eels are so far behind every other club in the little areas its quite scary.

At times, the players look like they don’t care.

There are a lot of things wrong with the Eels and some of them aren’t Kearney’s fault. But you get the feeling the Parramatta coach has run out of ideas.

Kearney is a dead man walking and he knows it.

“We lack toughness to be able to push through a bit of a setback” he said at the post match press conference.

“I think when teams play against us there’s a bit of carry-over from last year and they think, ‘just hang in there and we’ll get them. They’ll self-destruct’.

“For me that’s as plain as it gets, for sure. We’ve got to toughen up and get through those periods, for sure.”

Under pressure and struggling for answers, Kearney has limited legendary backrower Nathan Hindmarsh’s playing time. This is despite Hindmarsh still giving his guts for the cause.

The skipper has also announced he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the year. Wouldn’t Hindmarsh want to be out there for every last second of every last match?

With the Eels leading after 30 minutes and the Bulldogs offloading at will, Ben Barba saw a gap and hit the turbo boosters.

If it was any other Eel, Barba would have been through and off for the prize. But it wasn’t any normal Eel. It was Hindmarsh. The former International somehow scrambled across, closed the gap and dragged Barba to the ground.

Hindmarsh was then taken from the field and all hell broke lose.

It isn’t all Kearney’s fault. The players are clearly to blame too. But you can’t sack an entire roster.

Hooker Matt Keating, a possible future Parramatta captain, wasn’t happy post match either.

“I don’t know if we are trying too hard” Keating said.

“There seems to be some boys that are trying and some that aren’t. Steve talks every week about doing your job, but we don’t seem to be doing that. We look away for one moment and it burns us.”

Kearney was seen in the sheds pre-game idly doodling on a clipboard. Perhaps he was writing up his résumé.

i would even question his kiwi coching abillity, he obviously had our finet coach hold his hand in the world cup then he consulted with both bennett and bellamy during his fluke win in 2010. since he had our coaches hold his hand he has only won against a weak wales team and got flogged by eng 36-0 which is just an embarrassment to the nrl. so with his performance with the kiwis without our finest coaches and his 7 from 34 wins in nrl and our worst start to a season in 52 years baffles me as to how some ppl dontt see kearney as parra eels main problem, plus everone that plays under this clown seems to lose form, not improve or get worst.

Curtis Ben Roberts is not the problem. Problem 1Sandow talking 20% of your salary cap and playing for Wentworthville is. Problem 2 is signing Hopa. He is a very good player however he is 18 months away. I know what a lot of people are thinking. Why is Hopa on 800k(I think this figure is rubbish but lets say it Sandow plus some) in 2 years a problem. You can't bid for players like Daly Cherry , Foran when they come on the market cause they want big dollars and long terms. Having up to 40% of your cap gone on 2 players with one out of form and the other on a mission is. Problem 3 Finally Kearney why was he signed for such a long period he has no actual experience at coaching at this level. now before all you Kiwi's fire up. Coaching you nations side is not same with none of the challenges week in week out. You don't have to worry about little things like your player lives. What they get paid. Salary caps etc etc. Problem 4 Parramatta believe it or not has some wealthy area's and you know what happens when wealthy smart people start living in your area. Wait for it .... Poker Machine don't ring up the huge amounts they used ! Btw this last one is a bit of a joke....

Not to defend the decisions, but Taylor came into the Head Coach role after Hagan was secured for the following year.

Lasalo has missed several games this season, while several other players Kearney has promoted to the NRL team aren't quite of polynesian heritage (Matt Ryan, Cheyse Blair, Mitch Allgood, Pat O'Hanlon, even that Billy Rogers).

I wonder if the only thing that keeps Roberts in first grade (even after that game he had against West Tigers, when the team gave up on him and literally stopped passing him the ball) while Sandow gets dumped is because he is of the same heritage as the coach?. It would explain why someone like Lasalo hasn't missed a game since Kearney started, even though he hasn't broken a tackle in that time. I guess the fact that Horo can't get a start flys in the face of that argumment, but still...

, Kearney is not an NRL coach. Its not all his fault but his calm demeanor shows a lack of intensity that is required to deal with the players and i think listening to him speak would be de-motivating as a player. He comes across as un inspiring i think. But in saying that what coach would want to go the eels, it would be a death sentance for your career in the state they are in.

It's not really about who do we get!! It doesn't really matter who. This will not fix itself with time. This kind of thing happens to teams across all sports all over the world. The only solution is to cut out the cancer. The players need to know that no one is safe. This method of dropping players to wenty is just a joke. Don't bother drop them altogether.. The realism is that these players want to play and not sit in the stands. I had a lot of time for Kearney but he is not mean enough for me. When I look at Bellamy or Hassler it's as if they would knock me out to win a game of rugby league where in contrast Kearney would make me a cup of tea...

There have been some odd decisions made by the Eels board(s) in relation to coaches stretching back to 2001. At that point BRIAN SMITH was given a 5 year contract. Why clubs contemplate 5 year coaching contracts is beyond me. Next JASON TAYLOR was overlooked as his fulltime replacement after doing good things as caretaker in 2006. In probably the craziest coaching appointment I have ever seen a proven dud in MICHAEL HAGAN was preferred to Taylor. In the only sensible decision made by the club in 10 years coaching wise, DANIEL ANDERSON was given the job with immediate results. Andersons firing effectively less than a year after getting us to the GF was off the scales in terms of baffling decisions. Purely polical/ego driven. Unlike Hagan, STEVE KEARNEY has huge self belief (and a payout clause in his contract) so he will not resign as Hagan did. However, he has been a failure by any measure. The board should not compound a bad decision by retaining him. He ought to be replaced. Basically the cost of retaining him in terms of membership and crowds could be enormous. What they need to do is give it time and find the right replacement for next season. This club is likely to replace him with someone like Craig Coleman.

I take the point of the various people saying you sack another coach, but that's only because Kearney is coming in after 4 or 5 other coaches have been shown the door. If he was the first in after Smith would he be given this long ? There are some fundamental things wrong with Parra that fall directly on the coaches shoulders. Their defensive line was terrible on Friday, as bad as any team I've ever seen. Under 14s sides would be flogged at training for defending that badly. It's not the skills of the individual players it's how they interact as a team and that's the coaches fault. The use of Hindmarsh is staggering. I noticed someone bring down Barba and thought "who was that" of course the replay showed it was Hindy. The next time I saw him on the coverage he was sitting on a plastic chair with a towel draped over his face. Not only WAS he their best player, he IS their best player and is Parra's captain. I have yet to hear Kearmey articulate why this is his strategy. Sandow off the bench ??? Why ??? He either starts and plays 80 minutes or he stays playing fofr Wenty for another week. I actually think Parra have much bigger problems than Sandow. Hayne was disgraceful on Friday. The best example was watching Reynolds chase the ball with everything he had while Hayne came sauntering across in cover. Result = Reynolds scores. Willie Tonga is in the same boat and really shouldn't be picked for QLD. Justin Poore is continually rubbish. Parra's decline came when he came onto the field. He struts around the field doing his try hard tough guy routine. I can barely remember any impact he had at all. Mannah is trying hard but doesn't seem to be a shadow of the player he was. Maitua is consistently one of their best.

After having a look at B.A sports post....no i don't think the other sides would beat the current mob. This is the strongest competition the NRL has ever seen and there has to be a team that finishes last and as a result of that unfortunately someone has to cop the blame.

The team that had Hopkins, Stapelton and Peek in it would, but not because they are better players, but because they had a lot of pride in their performance. That 04 team also used players like the corpse of Adam Dykes, Michael Witt, Jake Webster Mal Kaufusi, Junior Langi and Wise Kativerata in the centre's. I think Daniel Tracey and Ben Duckworth may have even got a start in that team... or that may have been the following year, not sure. They also had a better, although also much maligned, coach...

what rubbish, how many coaches are Parramatta going to cycle through before they realise there has been a losing culture at this club since the 90's. I feel for Parramatta fans, they must be the most infuriating team to support, so inconsistent. One thing that would be interesting, Will Hopoate signed with Parra only because of Kearney and his long term vision. It surely would suck if by the time Hoppa gets to the Eels the coach who wooed him over was long gone. Where they need to start with is the players, the buck stops with them! It's about time they rid their hands of Jarred Hayne, his weak as piss performance on Friday was the last straw. He showed no heart and commitment to put his body on the line. He doesn't even deserve a SOO jumper at this point.

The first thing Kearney needs to do is ensure Hayne is not at fullback, his defense is terrible. Its no wonder Parra has been bad for 3 seasons in a row, he is lazy or has poor game sense. He is never in the right place to pull of some sort of defensive effort. Im sure the guy can tackle...hes just never around to do it.

Soulnds like a good plan. May wake up some of these boys and get their attitudes readjusted. Drop the whole team and bring up their under 20's . Make them realise that they are part of the problem. Just may see a win!

Kearney should have stayed in Melbourne under Bellamy and waited for another job. God couldnt save this side.
