GWS Giants deserves more credit

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

There’s been a lot talked about the concessions that the GWS Giants received on its entry into the AFL, and how it will cheapen their success.

I believe the team has earned everything they will win, up to and including a premiership, because it’s been a lot harder than it looked.

As it was the second expansion club in as many season, other clubs got to see what Gold Coast did before GWS and they made sure they locked away their good players.

Of those that were left, the good free agents didn’t want to go to western Sydney, and they quietly re-signed with their existing clubs, or took their bat and ball and went home to Perth.

GWS paid overs and got an overrated soft outside midfielder from Melbourne, a skinny might-be-a-centre-half-back-one-day from Adelaide, and a failed midfielder who can’t kick well from Freo.

GWS added not one but two Port Adelaide reject ruckmen, a Tassie boy who was playing for Casey, a retired midfielder from Brisbane, and the Cornes who wasn’t good enough to play for Port Power.

Also, Callan Ward’s best mate from the Scraggers, an Irishman who got cut from Carlton, and a 24-year-old rookie from North Ballarat.

That plus Israel Folau.

GWS’s coaches were fired from teams they led to premierships.

It then threw the kids into the fire, and are winning quarters against teams that think they are chances for the top four, and are in with a red hot go against any of the teams in the bottom bracket.

GWS is then going to need to convince these kids to stay, because as Mumford shows, you can’t make a player play for a club when he sees better opportunities elsewhere?

So, yeah, what they win, they deserve.

And spent the money they didnt spend on Cloke of re-signing some good kids "Dylan Shiel, Tom Bugg, Adam Tomlinson, Matthew Buntine and Adam Kennedy all extending their current deals until the end of 2015." http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/136081/default.aspx

GWS have apparently folded in the Cloke Sweepstakes.

Right next to an ad for Skoda cars - hard to tell which one is the story and which one is the ad?

They come from all over Australia, with half a dozen from Southern NSW, and two from Canberra, including one of the co-captains. More will come through the GWS Academy - it's an exciting time for the people of West Sydney - their very own club in the premier sports competition in Australia.

Tom, You might have noticed something called the Royal Easter Show. It turned out home ground into a cow paddock. The good people of the ACT are also paying us $2m a year or so to play some games there. ICAR, I object ! We have a number of fine South Australians as well, and Im very impressed by our young Sandgropers. Oh, and our Tassie boys are doing very well as well.

This is the article: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/afl/skoda-set-for-giant-premier/story-e6frexwr-1226356733902 Very exciting times for the people of West Sydney - they are building a club that all can be proud of. Everything they have done so far has been brilliant.

They are a Victorian team who play at Blactown, Homebush Showground, Canberra or Stadium Australia.

What annoys me is they say their from west Sydney but they've played a majority of their games in Canberra. Are they a Canberra team or a gws team?

Article in today's Telegraph about Skoda Stadium has a pic of the video screen. It looks impressive.

Palmer went, because he can't hit a target, lack of confidence and a sizable amount of fans blaming him for Barlows broken leg.

GWS will continue to get concessions and everyone is excited they have won a game, but they only beat GCS. Front page of the age - really? Is that front page news - the bottom team in the AFL comp won a game against the fellow bottom team. Sure every team deserves what they achieve and they still have to win games whatever their concessions are. Lets se how they finish up at the end of the season, before you give them more credit than they really deserve.

By the way, forgot to mention that GWS actually got a big front page spread on The Age for that win, which is pretty good.

I can remember Geelong West getting promoted from the 2nd Division to the 1st Division. It was around 1973 or 1974? They had to change their jumpers to red monograph on white so as not to clash with Preston.

I remember sitting on the cyclone fence at Kardinia Park watching Sam Newman and the Nankervis brothers on the Saturday and if you lent back too far, it was about a 30 foot drop onto asphalt on Moorabool St. Then on Sunday going to watch Geelong West in the VFA. Unfortunately didn't see any cyclone fencing at the Blacktown ground otherwise l would have perched my kids on there for a few hours for old time's sake. Can Ian Witchurch have a word to Sheeds and have some cyclone fencing put around the new ground? Will give it a more local feel.

There's a lot to be said for going to a local footy game, not many people, and just chilling out. I was only reminiscing the other day how great the old VFA used to be.

GWS are the best thing since sliced bread as far as l am concerned. I am Geelong supporter from way back but now live in Sydney. Went to the game at Blacktown and it was great - they had a BBQ going, no queues for beers, nice small ground and we could get seats on the boundry line. Damn, even the security staff were friendly and that is saying something in Sydney. I took a couple of my kids, along with a few mates who are all rugby league followers and a few of their kids - it took a lot of convincing and bribery to get them there but hey were all impressed with how well it was organised, our close proximity to the players as well as how friendly everyone seemed to be. Maybe this friendliness will fade away as they get more successful and more crowds come along to games but at the mom, it's great. Sitting at the MCG and the SCG on big match days is great but equally it's nice to scale it down and be up nice and close to the action where you can hear the players talking to each other. Sheeds and Choco are doing a great job but please keep the games away from ANZ stadium ... it's a graveyard. And my league mates ... they all said they would be back for another GWS game before the year is out (providing l pay for their beers up to half time again!)

Once Port moves to Adelaid Oval, they will have zero problem drawing a crowd. Of course it would help if they could occasionaly win a game.

Does that mean they are expecting 20+k for each of those games? That's pretty good!
