Queensland team for 2012 State of Origin Game 3 announced

By Laine Clark / Wire

Queensland have named a 20-strong squad for the 2012 State of Origin Game 3 decider to provide cover for their injured stars, which include fullback Billy Slater.

Slater features in Queensland’s expanded squad, but is racing the clock to be fit after suffering a knee injury in Origin II, initially expected to sideline him for up to another three weeks.

Greg Inglis is expected to wear the No.1 jersey if Slater succumbs to injury, with Melbourne’s Dane Nielsen likely to slot into Inglis’ left centre spot.

Canterbury’s Ben Barba has not been included, with experienced North Queensland fullback Matt Bowen earning a recall to the 20-man squad.

Maroons selectors are also sweating on Justin Hodges (ribs) and Sam Thaiday (shoulder), while Gold Coast lock Ashley Harrison (broken toe) has been ruled out, handing Brisbane’s Corey Parker his Origin starting debut against NSW at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday July 4.

Parker’s Broncos teammate Ben Te’o has been called into the extended Maroons squad.

South Sydney forward Dave Taylor lost his starting spot to Thaiday and will be under pressure to make the bench with the inclusion of Te’o.

Selectors will make a final call on whether Matt Scott starts after the Cowboys enforcer attends his mother’s funeral on Wednesday.

If Queensland win game three, they will seal a seventh straight series, giving retiring prop Petero Civoniceva a fitting farewell in Maroons colours.

Meninga will give Slater until the end of the week to prove his fitness.

“He ran yesterday, he was very upbeat, we are very hopeful but we can’t make any judgements just yet,”he said.

And asked about whether Inglis would replace Slater at fullback, Meninga said: “We’ve got Matt (Bowen) here as well, but we are in no hurry (to make a decision).”

Squad (alphabetical): Matt Bowen, Darius Boyd, Petero Civoniceva, Cooper Cronk, Matt Gillett, Ben Hannant, Justin Hodges, Greg Inglis, Nate Myles, Dane Nielsen, Corey Parker, Matt Scott, David Shillington, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith (capt), Brent Tate, David Taylor, Ben Te’o, Sam Thaiday, Johnathan Thurston.

i do agree that nsw have won the battle of the forwards and i hate to say it seeing as its his last game but i think petero has to go back to the bench. just a bit to old to handle the pace of the first 20-25mins. i think matt scott will be fine to start. and probably hannant into the starting side, on current form i think hes about the best front rower in the world at the moment.

Ben Barba is a versatile and outstanding player who I believe has earned a shot at origin.

I am a keen sport fan. Have always followed rugby league. I am looking forward to watch the State of Origin Game III on Wednesday and wish all the Queensland members of the squad all the success and best of luck. I am somewhat disappointed that Ben Babba was not included in the team. He played a great game. Guess the selectors of Maroon's know what they are doing. My advice to the team is that they should not give the NSW team any opportunity to wiz pass them and score tries. They should defend until the last Wiesel. Good Luck to you my Maroon Boys, dont give up fight till the end. Try as much as possible to off load making sure not to pass to your opponent.

Don't think sticky would want to use the eel moniker at present.... :(... The only point you have proven is that like all qld'ers, you believe you are correct in your opinions....unfortunately that doesn't make it reality...it just makes you look even more arrogant - you don't need to be Ricky to have realised that most qld'ers are like that... we've known most of them are like that for at least 32 years now... just because the Trickster has all of a sudden let it out in the media doesn't mean it's a 'new' concept or opinion of ours... but maybe in that good ol' country town of Brisbane or wherever else you might hail from they all believe your nonsense... but nowhere else worth mentioning would anyone listen to it..... so go take a break with your "racist selection policy" mumbo jumbo and smell the roses...

To be fair Oikee was tlaking about the risk in putting poor Robbie Farah in the position where he plays when his heart is not in it. entirely understandable, and there is the same issue with Matt Scott. There was no distrespect to Farah in saying his last game looked like a man with his head not in the game. Mine wouldn;t have been.

Never "one" a match BJ, I think you may want to spell that one "won". The reason they didn't win a match was because the NSW based Queenslanders played in blue, not for the "smug and arrogant" reasons you think. Thanks for those words Ronnie or is it Ricky using an alias. Thank you both for your interesting opinions, you make it a lot easier to prove a point.

That would be South America.... or do you mean Tasmania? hahaha.... good old Al has jumped on the "racist' bandwagon with the other sheep now...... the aforementioned dictionary has also decided to replace the words "smug" and "arrogant" and "double standards" with Queensland.....

oikee, I am convinced that you are not smart enough to be a moron. for you to question Farah's commitment to his profession is ludicrous, many players have been in this situation before and as with this time it is discussed at a multitude of levels. Farah would have input, and the decision will not be made by one person. I have no doubt if Farah believes he can't do the job he will step aside. As for Cam Smith I dare you to find another player world wide that interferes with the play the ball or slows it down more than he. The unfortunate part is referees give him more lateral movement than any other player and this includes his team mates. History shows us that Buderus plays his best football at club level, personally I would have preferred to see the serial pest at #9, Ennis. It never ceases to amaze me how teams having a shocker of a season can still feature so prominantly in rep selections. I would like to see the curtain raiser to SOO be a game for debutants origin players, 34 new players each year.

aussie Al, how is that gooder english working for you, obviously you are no intellectual genious yourself. I think the word should have been "you", but being from Queensland I am guessing you meant it to be "yawl". You know the way you intellectual genius' speak in Queensland, having trouble with pronunciation. As for the education process of interstate rivalry, look up the record books, before SOO was commercialised it was simply called NSW vs Queensland and you know what Aussie Al, Queensland never one a match. NSW agreed to rule changes to make you boffins more competative and to keep bums on seats. "As for the intellectual giant who was able to type the big word “redneck” perhaps your should educate yourself a little about the origin of words before you go dribbling them"

The Macquarie dictionary has recently decided to replace the word hypocrite with NSW. One state of origin side last year fielded players from Burkina Faso, Fiji, ACT and one even played world cup for Tonga. They were in blue, get over this whole pathetic whinge, you should be much better at losing with dignity by now. The main reason Greg Inglis wanted to play for Qld is they do not have a racist selection policy. One third of Queensland's players since 1980 have been indigenous, NSW sometimes have 1or2. As for the intellectual giant who was able to type the big word "redneck" perhaps your should educate yourself a little about the origin of words before you go dribbling them. A "redneck" is a poor uneducated farmer from the southern racist pro slavery states of America. So if you want to adopt this an insult check out a compass to see which state is in the south.

Very strong team chosen for Queensland. Surprised though not to see Ben Barba and Ashley Graham in the team as they have been performing outstandingly well for club.

Austalia doesnt "poach" players.... no one is forcing anyone to do anything.... go back to the players and hit them up about where their loyalties lie... if they want to put their hands up to play for Australia because they're going to get paid more (among other things) then why should the country be blamed for the choices they make....
