Panthers pip Sharks in golden point

By Joe Barton / Roar Guru

Cronulla’s finals hopes took another cruel blow on Saturday night with a controversial 21-20 golden-point loss to Penrith at Toyota Stadium.

The Sharks appeared to have stolen victory in the dying minutes themselves when bench forward Tyson Frizell crossed to give the home side a 20-16 lead.

But when a short kick-off found touch – and a scrum was controversially awarded to the Panthers – one last chance was afforded the visitors.

That was all Michael Jennings needed, dancing through defenders to level the scores with just 34 seconds on the clock.

Panthers halfback Luke Walsh had a conversion attempt close to the sideline to seal the win, but his kick hooked in the wind and slipped past the left upright.

He didn’t wait long for redemption, calmly potting a field goal from 20 metres out in the second minute of extra time to seal the win as the crowd of 7,848 let their feelings of disgust known to match officials.

Despite the dramatic finish, it was a dour contest for the most part as both sides struggled with troops missing.

A week after being blasted 36-4 on their home turf in a performance coach Shane Flanagan said lacked attitude, Cronulla took the field with even more reasons to fold.

They were missing their attacking fulcrum, Todd Carney, their inspirational skipper, Paul Gallen, and another half a dozen first graders to injury.

Penrith weren’t short of missing troops themselves, with former skipper Luke Lewis (neck) missing out on a match-up against his future teammates and Travis Burns suspended, but they did welcome back another player headed to the Shire, Michael Gordon, playing his first match since breaking his leg in round one.

And it was Gordon who sparked the dour contest into action midway through the first half with a 40-metre bust which gave Walsh the room to set up the first of Coote’s two tries with a clever grubber.

Cronulla had a player score a brace themselves, with rookie centre Ricky Leutele crossing twice, but it was not enough.

So Harrigan and Raper have now admitted that the Sharks were robbed of two points by the refs missing two crucial calls, the off sides at both the kick off and from the charge down. I think it is time for Raper and Harrigan to be sacked. The whole season has been one reffing fiasco after another. And that is at least 4 points the refs have admitted costing the Sharks this season.

Gallen doesn't need to bother with the Sharks anymore he's too busy trying to build a legacy for himself as "Origin Legend" and the all conquering savior of NSW

Fair dinkum dude ! It was an ordinary game because it was being played by two virtual reserve grade teams. Cronulla had all their key players out and Penrith don't have any key players ( that's why they are cellar dwellers). Lewis (out) and Gordon (first game in 6 months)are the their best, and both are off to the Sharks next year ! Penrith got away with the win on this occasion. Many other games they have already ballsed up this year. There were planty of refereeing blunders in the game like every game, every week, but the ball from the final kick off , whilst bouncing short of the 10 metre line then went into touch 11metres into Cronulla territory. The linesman's decision was spot on ! Cronulla will get back on track once they get Gallen, Graham, Carney, Gibbs & Pomeroy back. Not sure they can win this year, but with Lewis & Gordon next year, they will be formidable !

To be precise they were missing Carney, Graham, Gibbs, Pomeroy, Gardner.....and Gallen, who hasn't played for the Sharks for over 11 weeks, since before Origin.,,,but in contrast to the build up before origin, when everything was about Carney and gallen as the potential saviours of NSW in a massive media beat up and everything was somehow going the Sharks way and the Sharks were the feel good story of the NRL....nothing at Cronulla matters anymore, they are just the same old loser Sharks and the refs don't need to bother getting anything right ...Carney is a non story since he didn't deliver on the hype for NSW and Gal doesn't need to play for the Sharks anymore as he is really the heroic martyr of the Blues sorry tale. I guess it is best really not to mention Origin anymore anyway as it was such an embarrassment to the nRL and the fiasco that is its reffing. Let's just sweep it all under the carpet and get on with the next feelgood story...Souths maybe..or how good is Bennet...or what about those Bulldogs hey...who cares that Origin just cruelled the season of every team that had players involved...not that it hurt Bennet or Souths or the Bulldogs because they didn't contribute any players...geez even the mighty Dragoans are making a run at the eight...who would have thought...how good is all this?

A morale crushing loss for Cronulla as things get worse at the shire. Granted they were missing the likes of Gallen and Carney but if they are going to make the finals at the end of the year and have any impact for that matter they have to beat the panthers.

Damn straight JVGO the highest level of the game, Origin has become a joke where results are now determined to a large degree by the bizarre, inconsistent and conflicting calls, If they cant get it right at the highest level how will they get it right in the week to week competition.

Here is a list of some of the things the refs missed in the final minutes last night. Simmons off side at the short kick off, but I guess the ball never went 10 metres anyway so it doesn't matter I guess does it, it's barely relevant?. Ball fails to go 10 metres, but apparently gale force wind blows it backward. Ciraldo touches the ball before it bounces out anyway. Touchie in crap position to tell where the ball went out exactly but what would you expect. In golden point from charge down of Chad Townsend field goal Penrith player who picks the ball up is off side in front of the charger before running 50 metres downfield from where Penrith set up the winning field goal. This is what it takes to win a game these days, 5 incredible errors in a couple of minutes. And thus the Sharks will probably miss the 8. Oh well who cares if the NRL is at the point of being a farce. It's only the Sharks anyway.

I thought he got it right myself, Sharks blew that they should have been able to defend a set of six with the game on the line from 40 out. In my opinion the ref stuffed up massively though missing the obvious offside from the charge down. that should have been a penalty to the sharks. NRL needs to get these stuff ups out of the game.

the officials botched it yet again and nothing is done about. coaches cant say anything against these protected species. tough judges and refs are too afraid to make calls. sharks seem to cop the wrong side of calls

in the opinion of the the officials!! they do not want to admit they were wrong and will say anything. video and stills indicate many things they missed in the incident. it was a wrong call - period. and now that will cost a team two points in this so called 'great game'

NF, when the NRL serves up this crap every week you will lose fans, they will simply not turn up. I am a Sharks and RL fan of over 40 years but I will not pay $80+ to watch this week after week. I never thought I would feel this way but the reffing, as a Blues and Sharks fan, this season has been a farce. I can't stand it. For the Sharks this goes back 4 or 5 seasons at least to before 2007 when Sharks lost an enormous number of close games in controversial circumstances and Stuart whinged and whinged about it until it turned around in 2008. It was ridiculous with the Sharks last season also. I am sick of watching missed knock ons, missed forward passes, dubious ruck penalties, stripping penalties, off side penalties and absurd and ridiculous and inconsistent video reffing decisons deciding games and teams futures. The game to a large extent has lost its way. So much depends on the battle on the ground and the ruck and for field position that the adjudication of the ruck and ruck penalties essentially decide games. The ruck needs to be sped up and more attacking football rewarded. With more tries the games may not be so close but the better team who plays the best football will at least win. things will be more entertaining. but don't tell Gus Gould this because of course the way it is now everything can be manipulated for the media much more easily. You simply cannot base a successful week to week competition on a basis whereby fans are continually walking out of games gutted by contentious ref calls. This is why they got rid of contested scrums. this is why they brought in the ref at the ruck. This iwhy tries are worth four points and field goals one point. And this is why RU can never deliver a real viable club competition because the outcome of games are too dependent on the interprestation of the ref and his adjudication of the laws of the game. Basically I will not be spending more money turning up until my faith in the refs is restored and Sharks fans know their football and I doubt they will be turning up much either until this situation is dealt with. It is worse than a joke. But don;t tell Gus Gould or Bill harrigan, who both live in the Shire, by the way. i hope someone runs them over in Gymea shopping centre.

Pathetic crowd from Cronulla you still in the top 8 for god sake you should be there supporting them disgraceful effort. I shudder to think if you get the wooden spoon one year what 'attendance' would show up.

Sharks season. Rd 1 fiasco, ref sacked. From there on we get fair trot and we win a lot. Lose Gallen for Origin for what has been 11 weeks now so that he can go and get ripped off by the refs with some incredible decisions for the blues. Post origin with injury decimated side, stupid penalty brings Easts down field to level the scores in the last minute. Dragons winning try involves two knock ons. Last night Ciraldo touches the ball and touchie has no idea but I guess there was a gale blowing because the ball was pushed backwards across the ten metre line by the wind. I don;t think I can really stand more of this. Sharks fans think much the same, 13,500 against Easts Monay night, 12,000 against Canberra, 8,000 against Penrith, next week 5,000....probably.

You have to play according to the rules at the time, rules say golden point so its golden point, rules say it has to go ten metres and in the opinion of the officials it went exactly 10 metres. If the sharks then can't defend from that position then they lose. Period. No more arguments. No whinging necessary - you lost.
