This was a gutless act by the Wests Tigers

By ScottWoodward.me / Roar Guru

What a gutless act by Wests Tigers! Fair enough, if they do not want coach Tim Sheens, then sack him and get a new coach.

Tigers chairman David Trodden and CEO Stephen Humphreys had an opportunity to show their members some leadership but instead of solving the problem they have elongated it. Humphreys was recently mentioned as a candidate for the vacant NRL CEO position – heaven forbid.

Who does Chairman Trodden think he is trying to kid with inane statements like, “He’s been offered a position and we would love to see him continue in a senior role in our club and to be fair to Tim this has all happened quite suddenly.”

Collingwood Chairman Eddie Maguire tried the same naïve and gutless act by moving AFL’s highest rated coach, Mick Malthouse, to a ‘director of coaching’ position so Nathan Buckley could take over. There is no way that Malthouse was going to hang around and watch his ‘apprentice’ give the orders, and to expect Sheens to do the same is foolhardy.

Trodden’s point that this has “happened quiet suddenly” is also inaccurate. Everyone in the game has known that Sheens has been on thin ice for months. Wests Tigers have had ample to time to get their act together.

They have clearly tried to avoid a $900k pay out to Sheens, and still sack him as coach. That is simply not possible and they must take the hit so everyone get on with life. The supporters want some clarity for next season.

The Tigers’ administration have fans very upset as they do not know exactly if Tim Sheens will be involved in the club for 2013, or who will coach the team. They have also watched many in-form and promising young players sacked and veterans like Braith Anasta and Lote Tuqiri signed up.

If they lose their champion hooker and skipper Robbie Farah to the Eels they would be a leading contenders for the next spoon.

Rene Firstly Robbie played most of the year with an injury and Benjy was forced to play out of position, he is NOT an organiser. Add to that they lost their fullback and halfback (Lui) then they were always going to have a problem. They will get the fullback for 2013 in Tedesco and they have the find a 7. Braith shud be retired and I think Sironen is a back rower. They still dont have an organiser and tactical kicker apart from Robbie.

If Robbie questions his coach as much as he bugs the refs, It's no wonder that there was no team unity.. this guy needs to keep his gob shut and start doing what he used to do well, playing for the team. He played well in State of Origin, but 'ONE Appeal' when he should have gone for the tackle, cost NSW a try and the game.

Scott, Both those guys played this year with a far superior roster to what they will have next year. I know they only just missed out on the 8 but i think all the teams below them will improve more than they will. I certainly can't see them making the 8 and would put money on a bottom 4 finish.

Basketcase- Moltzen Fragile general play kicking - Marshall Last tackle penalty every week- Blair Wingers liability under any kick - Tiquiri & Utai The Tigers needed to get rid of the dead wood . Head coach and cattle. But there is still some cattle there...I hope Jennings comes over and Ashyford stays. He will end up at lock soon enough as he is as strong as an ox. Tedesco I hope is the big next thing and we can put Moltzen out to pasture... finally . -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

Scott, what makes you think they weren't? Do you know something the rest of the world doesn't? Surely Bris are entitled to the same presumption as other clubs ...

I reckon tigers could be the first side to go from premiership favourites one year to wooden spoon favourites the next! Bottom 4 finish - guaranteed.

You're right Arthur - it seems a strange criticism. Especially when you consider only Brisbane, Saints, Manly and the Tigers have won legitimate premierships in the past 10 years!

Anasta is only a good signing because you rarely see him. Which means there are less people to get in Benji's way on a jinking run across field.

If they move to Campbelltown the Tiges slowly die and the magpies brand will work its way back. Will never happen. However I am in favour of amending the split of games to be more in favour of campbelltown e.g. 6 games Campbelltown, 3 Leichhardt, 3 SFS/Homebush (I know Tiges are currently contracted to play out of SFS but it's idiotic).

The Tigers playing roster has always been over-rated. I dont buy the argument that they "should have won more premierships". Which years should they won premierships by virtue of having a more talenetd roster than the premiers ? I would say never. If anything they over achieved in 2005 when Parra and Saints had superior talent but failed. I would keep Sheens, and let a few players go. Moltzen and Ryan out for a Jennings in would be a good start. A rock solid half to support Benji would be needed too. Anasta may prove to be a good signing for Benji's game.

Correct me if I'm wrong Scott but isn't the payout $900k, the equivalent of his salary for the remaining two years? So it seems that it is either pay him the money now and get rid of him or continue to pay him that money as his salary in another role within the Tiges for the next two years, a role where he could potentially add value. The issue is though, keeping someone around who isn't wanted can create a very toxic environment, and that isn't something the Tiges need right now.

Miller seems to divide opinions... But he probably deserves a decent chance in the top grade. And I reckon Tedesco is the fullback for the Tigers for the next 15 years! It'll be Billy Who and Whatsit Barba once this kids gets his chance!
