Brisbane Roar vs Melbourne Victory: A-League live scores, blog

By Katie Lambeski / Roar Guru

Brisbane Roar will look to make Ange Postecoglou’s return to Suncorp Stadium a losing one when they host the Melbourne Victory at Suncorp Stadium on tonight. We’ll have live scores and commentary from 7.45pm AEST.

Both sides come into the game after losses last weeekend to Perth Glory and Melbourne Heart respectively.

A rivalry between these two has been brewing over the last couple of seasons and I cannot wait for this latest instalment.

The last meeting between the two was on Feb saw the Roar 3-2 winners over the Navy Blues. To just remind you how far away that was: Harry Kewell scored both of Victory’s goals that day.

It is hard to get a read on both sides right now, considering both have only played one game.

What was clear last weekend, however, is that Victory are going to take some time to play that way it never has before. That’ll be intriguing, to see how the Victory go against the champions.

Brisbane got started last weekend in a tight game and was two minutes away from a point at Perth, and they should pick up their opening points here.

Injuries and international breaks will impact this game. Socceroos and All Whites duty will leave the Victory without trio Archie Thompson, Mark Milligan and Marco Rojas.

Ivan Franjic and Henrique missed last week, but Franjic will start his season this weekend while there are doubts on Henrique.

Adding extra incentive, apart from the need to get the points on the board, the Roar will be keen to get one over Ange.

Victory, on the other hand, will be looking to avenge their derby performance and continue to develop the high passing/pressing game that was on show in parts last Friday. It promises to be a cracker, follow it all right here on The Roar from 7.45pm AEDT.

It's quite ironic because Brisbane fans have been putting Perth down for sometimes using the long ball.

After a little more thinking, I suppose I do have to consider that it was only some appalling finishing that prevented last week from being 5:1 and that solitary goal in Victory's tally line was a world-class cracker that was almost entirely courtesy to players that were not present today. When considered in that light, I have to wonder if Melbourne Victory has considerably more pain coming their way. That defence is ...

Only one way to settle a question like this - we'll have to revisit after full-time tomorrow! :)

Bit early to be calling top two I would have thought. For starters Perth are poor travellers and won"t get over the Mariners this weekend. All teams still have yet to hit their stride and I fully expect the Mariners to improve on last week's game and continue on with their push for THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Geez I thought Sydney FC had problems. As for Broich, can we naturalise him. Socceroos can do with his help!

Two seasons in a row with scant nothing done for a diabolically bad defence. I would suggest Victory has the worst defensive units of the A-League. You all know the usual suspects.

Brisbane all class, all energy, all confidence ... Melbourne all the opposite. Melbourne looked ok for the first twenty minutes but once Bris started to dominate it was all one way traffic.

Just quietly, bemused at the sudden about face on the Official Stance on Long Balls because Brisbane is doing it.

IF, and that is of course an almighty IF, but if Perth can win over Mariners then I think we'll have a pretty clear top two contenders in this league. Ange and Victory need another pre-season.

what do you say after that? Brisbane hungry, strong, quick and too good. A different edge to this team, not afraid to go long to hit a pass, very clean too. Victory have a lot to do. Didn't look too bad except for that defence. When in possession and passing, looked best . Nothing forward and all to do now join me at twitter @katielambeski for more discussion...have enjoyed my first game here, thanks Roarers!

The customary three blasts of the whistle peals out across the ground as the boys in gold drag themselves to the gate to the rooms as old Gladiators through the Libitinian Gate to the Spoilariun. Sic transit dignity, Melbourne.
