Mundine apologises to boxer Geale

By Joe Barton / Roar Guru

Anthony Mundine apologised to boxing rival Daniel Geale on Sunday, admitting he overstepped the mark with offensive comments about his Aboriginal heritage.

Mundine said he instantly regretted the remarks which drew widespread condemnation, notably from within the Aboriginal community.

At a Thursday press conference to announce their highly-anticipated rematch, expected to take place in January, Mundine drew Geale’s ire when he questioned the Tasmanian-born fighter’s heritage – and said he didn’t deserve to wear the Aboriginal flag on his boxing trunks.

But the barbs which hurt IBF and WBA middleweight world champion Geale most came when Mundine inferred he was less Aboriginal because he had “a white wife and white kids” – comments Geale said upset his wife, Sheena.

He now accepts those comments were out of line, with Geale accepting the apology.

“I think I went too far,” said Mundine as he appeared alongside Geale on Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports on Sunday.

“I want to be man-to-man. I had a press conference, and I’ll be man-to-man here and say I probably did (over)step the line about your woman and your children.

“I want to say I’m sorry, I’m sincerely sorry.

“After it came out I wanted to take it back but it was too late. I hope you accept my apology.”

Mundine had already apologised on Friday to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community for saying he “thought they wiped all the Aborigines from Tasmania out.”

During his Friday apology Mundine said he had a tendency to say the wrong thing before he realised it.

“Sometimes you say things and they’re out of your mouth before you can even take it back,” he said.

Geale was satisfied with Mundine’s mea culpa and shook his hand – but said he still planned to let his boxing do his talking on the matter.

“It was something that did get me. Say whatever you want about me, I don’t care but not the family, not the people I know,” Geale said.

“I accept the apology. But when the time comes in the ring we’ll sort it out.

“I do keep my opinions mostly to myself. Some of the things that he says I definitely don’t agree with.

“Some things that he has said before I have agreed with, definitely.

“But the guy says some things that aren’t right.

“That’s him. That’s what he does. I’m not like that.

“I’m a little bit quieter, I keep to myself a little bit more. I’d rather let my boxing do the talking.”

well i have been running since i was 2 years old but that does not make me a professional athlete. As geale says "ill do my talking with my fists" ... so maybe you should Show how much you know by writing things that are actually correct and informative and not based on ego. Im so happy for you that you know them. You must be very proud.

David i know Anthony and i guess you must as well ,seeing your so intune with whats happening ,Anthony puts on a show and is probably one of the nicest guys outside of ring talk and dosen't need this .bs. but thats his choice . i also know Daniel quite well and he spared many of my fighters over his early days and i am good friends with his long time coach in Tas Graham George . With over thirty years in the game i would like to think i have a rough idea about the game , cheers .....

You dont have to, but it just so happens to be the path mundine has chosen. And no it isn't unfortunate.. if everyone in boxing had the same character it would be boring. This is the reason we are on the forum right now, because it's interested and makes for good discussion... if you don't agree then don't respond.

And isn't it unfortunate that you have to be controversial loud mouthed to draw in a crowd , yes Mundine took what Ali did and has used it to his advantage adding the same recipe for playing down opponents and giving them a mouthful ....

Yes he did steve. He will fight golovkin when golovkin has built a bit more rep, and martinez was "unavailable". No other fighters will come even close giving him the pay day mundine will.Seriously dude.. you are wrong... really really wrong. Like dumbass wrong.

Steve, I lived through the Ali period and remember the behaviour and the public reaction. I am not suggesting that Mundine is in Ali's class, but Mundine learned much from how Ali promoted himself. Today we see Ali as that Great Champion Fighter. Back then, though admired for dancing like a butterfly and stinging like a bee, he came under very similar public reaction. People loved him or hated him back then. If you recall not only did he convert to Islam, which actually wasnt seen quite as controversial as it is today, he also was very critical of the West, refused to be conscripted and went to gaol for it, and often big mouthed against his opponents. One or two were embittered for years by his comments. But Ali, like Mundine, was a showman, and he raised the status of boxing significantly for a decade or two world wide. Mundine has only done it here in Oz but the Americans know him for his comments about 9/11. There is little doubt that Mundine took much of Ali's style and incorporated it into how he presented himself. Good luck to the young fighter he is soon to face. I would be very surprised if Mundine meant to be so degrading of his opponent....yes he crossed the line and I think he realised in the heat of the moment and the glare of publicity, he said things he now regrets because he is proud of his indigenous background. But that's how Mundine promotes himself and his fights, and when he fights, Steve, people pay attention, many hoping to see him flattened. But he loved being the cowboy with the black hat (excuse the pun) and if you think about it, its often the villain that draws your attention to a show. When he leaves, boxing will have lost not just a great drawcard, but a lot of interest in the sport.

Mate you talk rubbish , educate yourself majority money will come from Fox rights yet to be seen weather or not it will be a winner , and just how many will pay , and i can assure you Daniel didn't take this fight just for the money , don,t talk about what you know little about ...........

Steve.....the reason geale took the fight is because it was one with the biggest pay-day for him...educate yourself.

Mate Mundine could sit back and say nothing and this fight would draw a crowd , because most want to see his big mouth shut ,and to compare Mundine and Ali is nothing short of a joke , Mundine is sacrificing nothing Daniel is the one who is doing the sacrificing could have got way better payday and better cred fighting overseas than fighting big mouth Mundine ...

Good comment! when mundine leaves there is no doubt that australian attention to boxing will take a nose dive, maybe not by hardcore fans but the everday aussie. I am heavily into boxing now and follow many fighters. i was only 14 when mundine started boxing and he is the reason i started following. I was at the Green Mundine fight and it is a very fond memory. TRUE~ people dont seem to know that muhammad ali was the biggest loud mouth of them all, and converted to islam which created a huge stir. very controversial character though many years later still talked about. mundine isn't dumb, he is actually making a huge sacrifice taking all the heat from the media in order to publicise this fight. He knows what he's doing and it's working.

Daniel is the true aussie battler he never had a great fighter for a father and came from a hard working family in Tas . He was trained by a great amateur coach in Tas Graham George who taught him that hard work pays of . Daniel deserves everything that boxing can give and is a true ambassador for his State ,Country and boxing . He beat Mundine last time and lousy point scoring beat him , not only will he beat Mundine he will retire the big mouth , Mundine has crossed the line in talking about Daniel 's family , Daniel won't get mad he will just get even , good on ya mate see you at the fight ..........

Love him or hate him, Mundine knows how to draw a gate and make money. He has learned from his champion Mohammed Ali, who made many outlandish comments and often got the establishment way off side. Sometimes I think he believed what he was saying and other times he was just playing to the audience. Mundine has learnt those lessons. He doesnt care if you hate him or love him, what is important is that you take notice and are prepared to take an interest in him and fork out your pennies to see him strut his stuff. And he is a very good fighter, not great by any stretch, but very good. I must admit I'm amused by some of his outlandish comments that remind me so much of the young Ali. The young radical, giving the bird to the establishment, seemingly taunting his opponents with arrogance, sometimes going too far but we expect that. And no doubt people pay as much to see him lose as to see him win. But in the end he is an entertainer, and quite frankly though not up to Ali's level, a good one. He knows how to get people interested. he knows he has a limited time to make his fortune and get out. And though I think he is proud of his Indigenous Australian heritage, despite his recent comments, and does have some radical ideas, I would suggest that most of the bluster is for show. He obviously works very hard and his body will suffer in the long run as did Ali's. But I suspect when he retires, boxing in Australia will be less for that departure and many of us will probably later look upon him with some fondness, that wild colonial boy

I have looked at both "recent" and past competition, geale has had tough fights against real fighters where as mundine has destroyed sub par fighters. so for me, im not going to pretend to know what to expect from mundine. If mundine fights against geale like he did against otke or echols geale WILL be obliterated, but to be honest there is a slim chance of this happening.

David, look at their recent competition and that will tell you who should be favourite. I felt Geale won the first fight and he should win the second. Much more experienced. Too many angles and a too high work rate.
