Quade Cooper cops three match ban, $60k fine

By The Roar / Editor

After a four-hour hearing in front of a three-man ARU Conduct Tribunal, Quade Cooper has been found guilty of two charges of bringing the code into disrepute following his controversial statements.

Cooper has copped a three match ban from Super Rugby or Wallabies Tests (suspended for two years), plus a huge up front fine of $40,000, with a further $20,000 suspended for two years.

The fines were for social media comments ($10,000) made on September 22 and social media and mainstream media comments ($50,000), totalling $60,000.

Cooper was summoned to appear after a number of criticisms which included calling the Wallabies set-up a toxic environment.

He addressed the large media contingent after the hearing, but didn’t take any questions.

“It was a very fair hearing and I was very happy with the outcome,” Cooper said.

“Obviously, the sentence that has been handed to me, I have full respect for that and I understand that I fell well below par in what it means to be a Wallaby.

“For all the supporters that are out there, my apologies.

“From now on, I’m just looking forward to the future – hopefully having a big year, with not only my state, but the Wallabies.

“And I’m very much looking forward to overcoming my injury and getting back out on the field.”

so what are things such as defamation and slander all about then RK? you can think it is wrong till your blue in the face, but it is a pretty simple concept to grasp in todays climate. it doesnt matter if it is woolies, the wallabies or your local tuckshop, one cannot defame or slander their employer without repercussion. 10 years ago and its a non issue, but thats the internet and unfettered communication for you. i would bet some good money that there are a few of us that are less than happy with our employers at this time, but you dont see any of us venting on theroar or twitter. why is that? are we more sensible than quade? or do we instinctively understand that this is a public forum and you cant un-type a slanderous post? people who think we live in a world of free speech are deluding themselves, it has never existed nor ever will. there are always limits on what we can say. this goes doubly for our employers. i can fully appreciate what you are alluding to, and i agree that words are just that, words, but the reputation of your employer is sacrosant if one wants to keep their job. he shouldve just came out and said he hates deans and be done with it. deans is the coach, but the ARU employs him. who knows if it wouldve changed things though.

Your employer has every right to tell you what they want. And they have every right to demand you do your work. They have no right to tell you what to say in any capacity outside of your work.

Wallabies have won 52% of their matches. Deans with 58% is thus an above-average Wallabies coach. If Wallabies supporters are serious about seeing their team improve, then they should be seeking a winning record of 75%, i.e. same as the All Blacks, and not just for a brief span of time as in Rod Macqueen's time. But to achieve that we are going to have to see wholesale changes to Australian rugby.

You really think that??? Half the people bashing cooper even said they'd have been understanding if it was Genia or Poey coming forward.

Its probably not upto them, QC could claim the fine on his tax return as work related expenses (I think but not 100% sure, I know legal fines such as parking/speedin tickets incurred whilst performing work related duties arent tax deductible but not sure what the ruling is on these sorts of fines handed down by the employer). In the grand scheme of things it would still be the same portion of his take home pay as the original before tax amount would be of his pre-tax salary with the ARU/QRU.

The doubt surely remains whether Quade and Deans can play nicely. Or that Quade will be allowed to play to his strengths (see Campo's comments re Deans' focus on goals rather than tries - which I agree with). A number 10 will rarely look any good working with a pack going backwards. No 7's the same.

There has never been a decent rugby computer game, it just doesn't lend itself to it. I've played several, even forked out cash for a few, they've all been crap. I will admit I've not tried rugby challenge - maybe if I see it in the $10 bin I'll give it a whack.

Khoder hates league too. Prefers to be a boxing promoter. NZ League (Kiwis) don't need QC, they've got Benji, and can't trust SBW to stay in one place longer than 5 minutes. Besides, looking at QC's "appology", it would appear that he and Nasser have realised that no ARL team wants QC, that the ARL hates Nasser and that SBW may not be allowed to play league after all (because of Nasser).

How can you say "Unintended consequence I am sure, but still funny that Cooper is better at motivating the team than Deans". How can you measure or prove that?

Bull. Anyone who comes and said what he did in the manner he did it would have been torn apart and rightly so.

Yeah, great comeback. If RC2 ever came out, Quade will be a 2% tackler, and would be consistently injured or suspended for off-field incidents! Pity really - Sidhe did a pretty good job for first time around, but the combination of the criticism they have received and the low return on investment means they are concentrating on producing games for wider audiences (car racing etc).

"That being said, we'll be sure to take special care of his player stats if we develop a Rugby Challenge sequel." That is an awesome comeback from the gaming company.

Yes RK, it will be interesting, if the details are ever leaked. One does not have to be a Cooper supporter (which I am not and never will be for reasons I had posted elsewhere, but I understand this may not be the view of others) however the ARU in its wisdom had imposed what they felt was an appropriate penalty with a 'probation period', the matter now should now be put to rest. So he is 'back in the fold' and if good enough and I assume with the 'new top up ARU contract' he will against be eligible and will have an opportunity to 'win back' his Wallabies spot. From my view point I will leave it at that meanwhile, I am going to focus on the NH tour to get my next rugby fix.
