slow run race, the backmarkers never got into it,he was a flemington specialist and really only eva failed at wfa..his handicap form was what made him short price for the cox plate

I still imagine the prerace brief for the Cox Plate was "whatever you do, just don't injure the horse" (or the equivalent in trainer-speak). It does make perfect sense not to push Green Moon too much if they were really shooting for the MC.

also not for WFA races, you are correct in saying that Williams only concern is the MC

The second-stringers in the 2800 metre Lavazza Long Black earlier in the day ran a course record. It was a truly-run race, and the three best stayers filled the placings. I don't think that was the case in the Melbourne Cup. Tommy Berry had an easy lead on Glencadam Gold, and there was really no pressure up front. Kelinni had a gun run behind the leaders. It was no surprise to see him finish fourth with the light weight and that run. It turned out to be a sit-and-sprint in the straight, so the effort of Mount Athos to run on to fifth from so far back was very good. Ryan Moore was not the only jockey on a fancied runner who didn't do the maths and work out it was impossible to win from well back. Mount Athos also copped some interference from Americain rounding the home turn, which made him lose some momentum. I'm not talking through my pocket about Green Moon, as I backed Ocean Park in the Cox Plate, but I couldn't consider him a chance in the Melbourne Cup after his poor effort in the Cox Plate. There must have been a lot of punters at the Cup today who did their money cold on him in the Cox Plate, and not one of them happy.

Ahh, that's right. Weight penalties only apply to races of 2400m or more. Cheers. All just a coincidence then.

Hey Alfred, you don't get a penalty for winning the Cox Plate. Williams slaughtered it in the Cox Plate, still the most lacklustre reception for a Cup winner in the last 20 years, I know,I was there.

Mario, there's no need because it was always part of Williams' Melbourne Cup strategy. I wrote this for Green Moon in my Cox Plate analysis: "If the Melbourne Cup truly is the sole interest of owner Lloyd Williams who is not concerned about the prize money here, a win would mean a penalty in the Melbourne Cup which would be disastrous. He’ll still run a good race and probably figure in the placings but there are horses much more desperate to win this race than Green Moon." With a weight penalty, Green Moon may not have won today. Great management of the horse in my opinion.

How could a horse that ran so poorly as favorite in the Cox Plate who cost punters a fortune win the Cup in a canter. I hope the stewards look into this.

Atrocious ride from Ryan Moore on Mount Athos who was clearly flying when let go. Why the hell he was trying to hold that horse up off a visibly slow pace is beyond me, and I was there today. They were going a crawl and Moore hits the first corner practically pulling the head off he horse trying to hold him up. It was a good thing if there ever was one and he should have let the horse travel on!

Maybe it was because this was a slowly run Melbourne Cup. First 2600 was done in 2:46 and last 600 in 34.07. It wasn't a real staying test.

Surprised honestly to see Fiorente finish 2nd in the Melbourne Cup at 2 miles. At times when racing for Sir Michael Stoute in Great Britain he looked as if 12f was beyond him in some of his races until he finally broke through and won the G2 Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket at 12f.
