Why I'm still not sold on Cronulla

By MG Burbank / Roar Guru

I have to concede that, were one to look back through my columns during season 2012, one might suspect me of some kind of anti-Sharks bias.

I consistently labelled them as overachievers who would fall at the most important hurdles. Luckily for my fragile ego, Cronulla did indeed fail their biggest test in 2012: an elimination semi against Canberra away from home.

The team’s biggest problem, which was a lack of true gamebreaking ability across the park, let them down (a subdued performance in all aspects of the game didn’t help them either).

So here we are in 2013. The Mayans were wrong, as was Mark Geyer, who predicted the world’s end upon hearing of the new shoulder charge ban.

The caravan of life has moved on, and I find myself looking at Cronulla’s squad for the upcoming season.

Some new faces, same problem.

Who’s going to break open the elite teams aside from Todd Carney?

It perplexes me that supposedly well-educated league scribes continue to be charmed by teams that add forward power to the point of naming them premiership favourites.

Last season, Wests Tigers added Adam Blair, who was supposed to be their ‘key ingredient’ in winning another title. I guess the rest of us were just supposed to overlook the fact that they had no three-quarters, an untested fullback and an experiment in the halves.

When will they learn: while possessing a powerful, athletic pack should make a team eminently more competitive, it can’t win you a competition. Even the champion Canterbury teams of the mid-80s that revolutionised the way defence was played contained match-winners like Terry Lamb, Steve Mortimer and Mick Potter.

Class wins premierships. The go-forward and defensive grunt aspects can be manipulated and/or replaced.

Cronulla have added more go-forward, workrate and power in the form of Luke Lewis, Chris Heighington and Bryce Gibbs, but who’s going to win them the close games with their creativity?

Michael Gordon could be very good at fullback. Possibly. We’ll see. Jeff Robson will be the bland understudy to the star halfback who may never appear. Isaac De Gois at dummy half? Not raising the hairs on the necks of ruck defenders.

The Sharks have high hopes for the young Fijian Ratini and a Kiwi kid named Sosaia Feki who did some damage in the Toyota Cup with the Warriors, but as of right now they’re about where they were last year, with a little extra muscle and punch in the forwards.

Certainly nothing to worry any of the teams that finished above them last season.

My last word on the Sharks (for today): despite this glitzy development funding they’ve been able to procure, fans shouldn’t be complacent about the club’s long-term future in the south of Sydney.

With suburban grounds due to be phased out over the next ten years, a club in an area as isolated as the Sutherland Shire, far away from either Allianz or ANZ, should have cause to worry.

Now bring on the hate mail, Sharks fans.

He basically won us the game against the Warriors last year. But then again, I would still like to see Townsend get the nod. He was solid last year, and the year before that. Being wasted in NSW cup.

Just on shark park the sharks own it so the government and nrl have no say on where we play our games. As to the side we beat all sides last year except the dogs so don't think we did too badly you also forgot to mention the injuries to our key players from origin onwards. End of the day it matters not what is written but what is achieved BRING IT ON UP UP CRONULLA

For starters mate, Dougie hasn't played for us since 2011. Gardner at halfback is an interesting idea, a lot of my shark supporting mates think that this could potentially be a masterstroke. In my opinion Gardner is NSW cup FB this year. 1. Gordon 2. Ryan 3. Leutele 4. Mills 5. Raitini 6. Carney 7. Townsend 8. Gallen 9. Degois 10. Gibbs 11. Lewis 12. Tupou 13. Graham 14. Fifita 15. Bukuya 16. Ross 17. Lichaa This side (when healthy) would challenge most squads. Plenty of depth with the likes of Morris, Peachey, Robson, Heighington and Pomeroy all playing reserves. Cronulla are incredibly underated.

I am not very familiar with this website, but how is this MG Burbank a "guru". He clearly has a hatred of the Sharks for unknown reasons. Does that make him a "guru"? Why hate on the Sharks so much? Did you have a bad experience as a child visiting the Cronulla beaches from your home in Casula? Or maybe you grew up in the shire and supported a team like North Sydney or the St George Dragons, so feel hatred towards the Sharks as they still survive (see it all the time). Anyway, we (shark supporters) do not "do" hate mail. Your blurb is nothing but hate disguised as some kind of "open debate" piece. Shark supporters just support their team mate. We have a good side on the up. Why do you want to bring the Sharks down so much?? Come on tell us the truth.

Down to where? 19-20,000 for home matches against St George and near the same at Jubilee,.19,000 against Souths,16,000 against the Tigers. Owning own ground,no reliance on poker machine revenue. One of the largest junior leagues in Sydney.Yep bringing the NRL down to the pits and to the depths of despair. Time for an ad"Down down, prices are down "with apologies to 'Wesfarmer's shareholders and Coles' customers.

Get rid of Souths while you're at it, they'll be gone in a few years anyway now that Crowe has pulled out. Ditto for Newcastle with Tinkler. Manly struggle with membership and crowds, as do Penrith - righto, they're gone too. No one even follows League in Melbourne, they're next. Tigers are a financial basket case as are Titans and Dragons, get rid of them. Roosters have no juniors and are around merely as a hobby for uncle Nick, see ya! Awesome comp: Bulldogs, Eels, Warriors, Broncos, Cowboys and Raiders, oh and of course the Adelaide Sharks. They can each play each other 4 times and then have a top two finals system. Bloody genuis. Why aren't you in charge Turbodweeb.

Ok PA, you did ask a few more Shark-centric questions so I will stick my neck out. Here goes .... from front to back followed by the bench .... Gibbs Robson Douglas Gallen (c) Heighington Lewis Gardner, Carney, Ryan, J Wright, Moroko, Ratini, Gordon Bukuya, Fifita, Tupou .... last spot is up for grabs Due to the Sharks lacking a definite "general" I think that this would team would give them the best capability of playing the style that I suggested in my earlier post.

G'day PA, no I didn't mention the Sharks just like I didn't mention my team, the Dragons. I think the Sharks have a great pack that will work hard all day but I am not convinced that De Gois is the dummy half to drive that pack. Carney is not someone who imposes himself on a team and dictates the pattern of play for what he wants to set up for tackles 4 & 5. On his day, Carney is a real good player who can make a break but imho he does not and cannot dictate play, and I see no other player who also can do that for the Sharks. A lot of discussion here has been who will play FB, Gordon or Gardner. Well how about this ..... has anyone thought of Gardner as a running halfback with Gordon at FB? With no standout 'general' controlling the play the Sharks could do worse than have both Carney and Gardner closer to the rucks using their speed and evasiveness to make breaks for the wider men to exploit.

Massive Luke Lewis fan. Paul Gallen and Luke Lewis on the same team. A half shortage will not hurt much if these two stay fit. Carney , Gallen and Lewis. How are they for Hookers anyone ?

IMHO Terry the Cowboys will not make the 8. One injury to one means they go from top 4 to bottom 4. If they loose one other JT I am taking whatever odds I can get on the spoon.

OK, it appears it wasn't quite the words "bottom 4" however you said they wouldn't make the top 8....so again a good omen for the team based on your above article. Here it is.... "And now, with the coup de grace, we had the Perth – sorry, Cronulla – Sharks v Manly game. I was stunned to wake up to articles by seasoned reporters gushing over the ‘arrival’ of Cronulla in the wake of their victory on Monday night. Really? Manly could not have cared less about this one. " "Cronulla have some interesting pieces (this chap Bukuya looks the goods) but I will be dumbfounded if they qualify for the eight. They win the Buster Douglas Overhyped Victory Award for this week" I'm not wearing glasses mate, i'm just seeing through you're garbage.....are you sure you're not Ronald M in disguise?

Good points Terry Kidd but how do the Sharks line up in attacking out wide or through the middle in your view ? And what do you think are our weaknesses? (obviously the backline). But what would be the best backline team line up?..Do you shift Luke lewis to the halves or centres or is he too slow?. Do you flick Robson and give the solid young 'kidd' Chad Townsend a go?.Where does Gardiner fit in..without injuries to the team?. I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on the Sharks, the line up and how far you'd think they will go this year. It's a Sharks article, but you didn't mention the Sharks.

IMHO the teams who will do well in 2013 apart from the obvious Storm, Dogs and Cowboys will be those who can come up with a game plan that will challenge and defeat the strong defences of this day and age. The best chance of defeating defences is to put the defending players in two or three minds or aim at a tired forward who can't move laterally fast enough. I will be looking for the teams that use their 5/8 in a straighter running role, where their outside men stand very wide, where the 5/8 has short options inside, short and long options outside, or the option to go himself. Then that same player must be able to sense when the defence is unconsciously inching wider and switch the attack up the middle. Souths can attack the middle very well but struggle with the wider bit. Dogs can do it wide but struggle to switch back to the middle, maybe Hodgekinson can help there. Thurston runs too much sideways and doesn't always have as many options to off load. The tussle for positions 4 to 8 is going to indeed be tight and interesting.

Another factor helping Sharkies reach the 8 is that the 2013 draw is kind to them. They only play Manly, Dogs and the Storm once.
