NRL proving to be the anti-expansion league

By NF / Roar Guru

While other codes continually expand throughout the years, there is always one code who is willing to do nothing proactive about expanding the game. And that’s the National Rugby League.

Rugby league seems to be the only code in the world not content on ever expanding; its approach is ‘heartlands’ they must protect over the heartlands they forgot about everywhere else.

The other codes out there are willing to take risk and invest millions of dollars in long-term expansion in ‘non-heartland’ areas. Historically, though, rugby league pulls out at a small sign of trouble (Perth and Adelaide, for example).

Furthermore, when those other codes go through hard times in non-heartlands areas they stay there and persevere, eventually getting rewarded.

Look at the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions who both were in financial strife in the early 1990s, yet the AFL stayed by them and were rewarded with the opportunity to create two-team local rivals with the Gold Coast Suns and GWS Giants in Queensland and NSW respectively.

League seems to be the only code it which the administration and fans are not keen on expanding constantly saying ‘it’s not worth it’, ‘focus on heartlands’, etc.

This mindset, along with the general laziness of the administration, has held the game back nationally and internationally to the point of no return.

It annoys me that rugby union is able to constantly expand internationally since its existence yet rugby league couldn’t do the same.

Seeing other codes walk over rugby league and their fans constantly laugh at league’s footprint is frustrating, as their codes tend to be in a greater state than ours.

It’s not too long to expand in Australia, but everywhere else is no hope.

Perhaps there was a slight chance 50 or 60 years ago, when the international game was competitive, but it’s too late now.

The NRL administration are traitors to the game and a humiltation to some supporters. Cant beleive its 2013 and no teams in the 4th and 5th biggest cities for the most watched sport on TV. Even more incredible when one considers its a small game internationally. I think it can grow but if effort is put in internationally, and it has been somewhat.

Perhaps oikee should try the proper calculator, you know ,the one used for calculating world cup crowds, for a particular code.

The so called vast majority(violins playing) have never spelt it our on google, stop the crap Greg.. You have no idea what the majority of fans, players, coaches,rl journos and administrators think. And being a union man with a dislike for rl,only makes your motives even more questionable. You and the links don't represent the vast majority, nor do they represent the rugby league tier structure, nor do they represent the views of many including the likes of Beetson et al. And it appears you have NFI on what being an immortal in Rugby league is all about. It is in fact the highest recognition a player can reach. I repeat care to demolish the Immortal recognition, instead of your usual BS bluster. I suggest I have been following rugby league for a lot longer than you(who appear to have little interest or knowledge),and will put my experiences against yours anytime of the day.

I asked for the $40 million a year that the 3 SOO games get as you mention above and all I got was a sponsorship and some casino deal with the Storm. Rugby is also open to all walks of life oikee.

Whatever makes you happy oikee. Sports are there for all to enjoy as players or spectators but if you think rugby league is only for a certain few then god help your sport. Brad Thorn was already an All Black when he switch back to rugby league and played three season for the Broncos winning a premiership as well as playing origin. SBW was also a rugby union junior in New Zealand oikee representing Auckland in the annual Roller Mills tournament. Rugby don't have time for league if you blink an eye and worry about it you might miss the Lions tours, Bledisloe cup, Heineken cup, IRB 7's, Olympics 7's, Commonwealth games, RWC, Six Nations, Pacific Cup etc etc.

True JZ Unionists such as Westy 'Real rugby fan', Greg, Clipper, etc has gone postal on league articles as of late even when there a couple of days old still sinking the boot in whenever they have the chance, it's seems typical that us leaguies can never be optimistic about our code. Yet other code fans can be we have to be negative it's the 'norm' as they say.

THE VAST MAJORITY of the league fraternity disagree with you!!! And so do I! Those links are showing this, can you understand that? Or do I have to explain it again? Arthur Beetson may have said it, I don't care, it doesn't change anything apart from he is one other who's opinion is far from the norm!

oikee have you ever lived in Perth ?. Even with out a team to call their own they still watch rugby league, and turn up to watch any game they can in good numbers and their is a less support in Adelaide. Perth is the logical choice before any other.

The evidence or lack thereof is not the final panacea,I am sorry to say. I have provided part of it above. And ditto on the matter of the eligibility of being a rugby league immortal The highest accolade one can get in rugby league. And to get there ,you have to have represented your country,as the 8 listed have. Their names and photos circle a Kangaroos jumper. So you and Westy (the real unionist)and other trolls can spellout the non importance of being selected as an immortal. You can't get it for just playing for your state or just your club. So we will wait with baited breath whilst you try to demolish the value of being an Immortal. "Petero Civenocea to Dan Koch journo 15/11/08 Ëver since I was a kid ,I grew up watching Australia and dreaming of playing for the Kangaroos." And I said it was the pinnacle, the Immortals eligibilty says it is,Petero,Beetson thinks so,the code's admin ditto, the RLIF Golden Boots an international award, and player of the year think so .I choose those with influence within the code, rather than a trolling exercise. But we are to rely on Greg a Kiwi league disliker and Westy apparently a real Rugby(thought that was in England a town BTW) as being the final arbiters Andrew Johns became an Immortal and an Australian Hall Sport of Fame, not because he played for his state but his country. I will say this both of you are good for a laugh. NB Just a thought,if you are so deperate to make a point, can I offer a token suggestion, stop continually spelling pinnacle as pinnicle.Else no sport on earth would have a pinnicle, they may as well have an icicle. You can say whatever you like about the sport, but if you are wrong await the arrows.

Further to my point,to become a rugby league imomortal of which there are now 8 Churchill inducted 1981 fulton 1981 Gasnier 1981 Raper 1981 Langlands 1999 Lewis 1999 Beetson 2003 Johns 2112. They all had one thing in common they were Kangaroos. You can't be an immortal just representing your state,as this is an Australian/National Kangaroo honour. A Johns in addition made the Australian Sport Hall of Fame, because he represented his country. Petero Civenocevain a story written by David Koch 15/11/08 "Ever since I was a kid,I grew up watching Australia and dreaming of playing for the Kangaroos." So tell me about prestige.

Evidence is not proof BTW,so dont;get all warm and fuzzy.Facts??? against word of mouth. But if you so wish to follow that path be my guest. http://www.foxsports.com.au/league/australia-captain-cameron-smith-named-rugby-league-international-federation-player-of-tthe-year/story-e6fr3ou-1226497973929 http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/05/03/2888678.htm?site=melbourne Order of player achievements in Wiki starting from club, state then country. And that is just for tasters. No difference ru man. I repeat your knowledge of rl is limited, nothing has change my view. I steered clear of NRZU monies debate and scrutiny of Wallabies in this thread,as I am no expert nor pretend to be one.Perhaps the same scenario could apply elsewhere. as someone alluded ,just another stock standard unnionist who get shis kicks from trying to belittle International rla,and as a by product the Kangaroos.

Your comment Greg with due respect is one o fthe most ill informed and immature I have had the disspleasure of reading."" Enforced "LOL you have obviously never been away on a Kangaroo tour, and try to make pithy desperate comments to rationalise your post.Without success i might add. Arthur Beetson was known as the father of SOO.If you know its history,it became an event after he cuffed his former Eels teammate Mick Cronin, who played for the blues. When Arthur stated he considered being a Kangaroo and leading his country as being the highest honour, you are telling me the opposite .You want me to tajke you seriously. One more time for the dummies;club/state/country.Gallop has mentioned it in the past.Grant the current chairman is a former International ,and wants to give more impetus to the international game. Why would he want to do this ,if International rl was not important. Some people actually prefer club to SOO and country .Some SOO to club and country and more than a fair share of players country the final rung. You can sprout as many google references as you wish or media hype(reliable at times LOL). On the other hand I can offer a different perspective"the horses'mouth. And you dare to call it misguided.I repeat are you calling me a liar ? Yes or no? I detect perhaps an underlying fear that rugby league will grow internationally to a point where it has at least half a dozen countries competitive to a point of winning an RLWC

I actually do Matt, ther is plenty of union followers who sprout crap and when I can be bothered I argue with them. Like I said its the right of anyone on any forum to do this.

You state that national is the pinnicle, which with all th evidence me and Westy have provided shows that you opinions are in the huge minority within the league fraternity. I never said it doesn't exist, I said it wasn't the pinnicle of the sport. Keep up champ.

You havent discounted any of mine with any evidence tho. You are basically just saying you disagree with them, whereas I show actual facts to prove yours wrong. Big difference champ.

Your view, ( which was enforced to you by the people paid to take you on a tour with the national team, how surprising!) goes against most players, coaches, fans, basically the whole rl fraternity. Google is the way to show you specific links which enforce the fact that your view, is misguided.

Its called Rugby League World now. They must have been given final approval to change LOL. Open Rugby name changed quite a few years ago, have the Feb issue on my very desk now. the name Rugby has always been used by thenm,in some heading format. They were at least allowed to use Rugby in their name, not like their brother in another country, who had to wait 50 years.

Show me a false statement, when I speak to players on a tour.Tamou wanted to play SOO,Kiwis did earn less than Kangaroos. That situation has changed recently. Show me where the code considers there are not three tiers club/state/country. You can sprout and post as much BS as you wish, but expect the appropriate response. It goes both ways!!! How much time do I spend in ru threads, bagging out the code, since you accused me?
