Rebels coach coy on his Super playmaker

By Melissa Woods / Wire

Spoilt for choice, Melbourne Rebels coach Damien Hill isn’t revealing which of his gun playmakers will line up at No.10 for this Super Rugby season.

Hill can call on current Wallabies five-eighth Kurtley Beale or James O’Connor, who has finally overcome the hamstring trouble which cruelled his 2012 Test campaign and has put his hand up for the job.

O’Connor thrived in the role on Australia’s 2011 European tour but hasn’t had much opportunity to prove himself there since due to injury.

“James can play wing, 15, 12, 10 and KB (Beale) can play 10 and 15 as well,” Hill said.

“It’s going to be what’s best for the team.

“They combine really well so they will be together out there and the two main voices.”

While Brumbies coach Jake White plans to play his strongest side from the outset, Hill said his best line-up was far from settled ahead of their opening-round clash with the Western Force on February 15.

The Rebels have two trials; against NSW in Hobart on Saturday February 2 and then against the Hurricanes in Geelong a week later with all members of the squad set to get a run.

“Competition for spots this year is the most we’ve had which is a fantastic position to be in, even if it creates a few headaches,” Hill said.

“The trial matches will be used to fight for positions so they’ll be very valuable for us.

“Thankfully we’ve got 34 of our 35 fit and ready to go so we’ve got a lot of combinations and we’re working through how we’re going to play them.”

Kiwi Jason Woodward could be the new face in the backline at fullback, where he starred for the Lions in last year’s ITM Cup.

The former New Zealand under-20s representative has a big boot which the Rebels need after losing veteran Mark Gerrard to Japanese club rugby.

The forward pack will also have some new faces with Wallaby backrower Scott Higginbotham joining Melbourne from the Reds.

As well as Higginbotham, another recruit – Kiwi Scott Fuglistaller – who had a stint with the Highlanders late in the 2012 Super season, is set to get first crack at No.7, combining with skipper No.8 Gareth Delve in a formidable backrow.

I'm still waiting for the ARU to act on their word to discipline KB after his night out on the booze while injured. In got shelved until the legal side was dealt with. I make reference to the following article: (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/rugby-gold/kurtley-beale-charged-over-alleged-assault-in-brisbane/story-fnbytzeo-1226397589709) "The ARU issued a statement saying: "Queensland Police have informed Kurtley Beale will face one count of common assault following an alleged incident nine days ago. "As a result the ARU's disciplinary process into the same issue, headed by integrity manager Phil Thomson has been put on hold until the external matter has been resolved. "Until then Kurtley will remain available for selection at Super Rugby and international level." Well that happened before he left for Spring Tour; KB apparently paid the guy a settlement at mediation and the charges went away. Just like with laptopgate, this does not mean that KB was innocent just that charges were dropped. And what he never denied was being out on the booze while in the Wallaby extended squad and injured; in itself a breech of the code of conduct, in conjunction with bringing the game into disrepute. It wasn't convenient to do anything about at the time apparently, but you would think now would be a good time to address it. Sweeping yet another incident under the lumpy ARU rug is hardly a sound way forward for the organisation. Especially when it is with a player with numerous priors.

I meant for the Rebels actually. Last time I checked Quade doesn't play for them. And by the way Tapuai ahead of Barnes, ditto Leali'ifano (assuming he gets back to where he was last year).

Quade's the man. Sounds like a promising backline. Add Ashley-Cooper and Ioane. I would put O'Connor at right wing and Barnes at inside centre. Genia at half back; Beale at fullback and there's a backline capable of taking the Lions.

Haha so you are using something Link said in 2010 as gospel? He also preferred to use Horwill as a 6 at the beginning of the season a few years ago also, doesn't make it correct. Is good to see you trust Robbie's selections. Shows how much you know about positions.

If Beale plays 15 and O'Connor 12, their better positions, who can play 10?

Hightackle, That's a bit sad to me as if Beale is not considered a fulltime fullback who is Australia top rugby is? I'm looking for players who play regularly and are experienced at fullback, have a feel for the position, when to counter, when to link and pass and when to kick. When to join the backline, good hands and good in the air. And can tackle. Like Israel Dagg, Ben Smith, Taylor and many others across the Ditch. I've always seen Beale as a player full of potential over the years but not really delivering until I saw him play fullback. Mind you while he played some great games at fullback he developed some bad habits like that little chip kick of his. Certainly injuries in 2011 and injuries and lack of fitness badly impacted on his game in the first half of 2012 but I was putting that aside because of the way he played in the previous two years. And because of the way he played I was calling him fullback.

You did and also talked about a "return of White" among others. He was passed over which was staggering so had surgery that was not necessary at the time. He clearly was more than fit to play or he would have had the operation weeks before. Thats the point Deans told him he was in the frame then he wasnt which cost him alot of time. The words "privately fuming" would suggest something dont you think?

Not according to those who count. Perhaps they dont blame Robbie for the 2004 tsunami like you do Justin.

I said Deans selected Phipps and Genia over White and so White opted for surgery. This is not wrong. White may well have been in Robbies 3 nats plans but White required surgery. What did Robbie do wrong? Indicate White was in the plans? Not select a player who needed surgery? Robbie should be sacked for selecting Phipps over an injured half who required surgery for 3 games.

Say "I was wrong and McKenzie did say that". I sometimes think I know more about the Reds than you. Opinions dont always change. My opinion of you is still exactly the same. Anyway, before I was interupted by somebody who didnt know what they were talking about I was saying Tapuai plays 13 and was bought in as injury cover at 13 before being shifted to 12 for Australia. He has played for the Reds at 13 quite often and it wouldnt surprise me if he played a lot there in 2013 with Harris at 12 but who knows what the Reds will do.

Im sorry but you are wrong I suggest you use google... its a pretty well known how it all went down. Why do you think it created headlines at the time?

Yep. But heres the thing, Beale is a 10 who was converted to FB in 2010. He spent 2 years there. In 2012 he played most of his rugby at 10 again. Of his 9 years of rep rugby only 2 have been primarily as a fullback.

The Wallabies won the tri nats, not Deans. Aust has been 2nd in the world and you are the perfect example of the unreasonable Australian fan. As Gatland said "Robbies job would be safe in any other country in the world" Why did he say that? Becuz the laughable insistance that Australia not only be 1 of only 3 nations to be able to compete with NZ but they must beat the best team thats ever played and often. What a joke. Perhaps every other coach in the world should be sacked? Becuz NO OTHER RUGBY NATION HAS DONE AS WELL AS AUSTRALIA except NZ over the last 3 years. And yet you whinge and blame him for things that are obviously not his fault or obviously not as bad as you make out. Deans took over in 2008. From the 6 3/4 nats Australia has won 1 and came 2nd 3 times against 2 of the top 3 countries in the world. Boo f#@king hoo. Quick top yourself becuz being clearly the 2nd best from the top 3 is unbearable. Australia isnt the best in the world so suck it up. Australia came 3rd in the WC, being knocked out by the eventual winners. Ahhhhh what a disaster! Australias 2012 had its ups and downs but Australia won the 2nd amount of international matches in the top 10 and also had the 2nd highest win %. Ahhhhhhh the end is nigh! WHAT A JOKE.

Justin wtf are you talking about? Genia and Phipps were selected as first and 2nd choice. White opted to have an operation that was required on his shoulder and you blame Deans? You are beyond help. The injury to White and Genia were not Robbies fault and if you somehow reason that it was I dont think there is any reasoning with you. White was ready to play...but required an operation. "Robbie bad, everything his fault" Was Deans the mastermind behind 9/11 too?

thats was in 2010. In more recent articles he has been quoted as the preferred 12. Someone probably referred to you as a charming little boy once... doesn't make it so now. Opinions change.
