Mundine an embarrassment to Aussie sport

By Curtis Woodward / Expert

You could hear it in Anthony Mundine’s voice at the pre-fight showdown with Daniel Geale. As Mundine fumbled his way through another tirade, this time with News Limited’s Paul Kent, you could hear the desperation.

Mundine is slowly slipping into history and he knows it.

Kent knew exactly what he was doing when he continued to probe the boxer. Mundine would do anything to sell a fight and it was evident here once again.

The journalist had his story and Mundine, ever the ‘showman’, kept himself in the headlines.

“I’m breaking records, doing what I done in sports, you know they gypped me in football, that’s why I left the game,” Mundine hissed.

“You had the [then-Australian] coach Chris Anderson coming out saying ‘We don’t pick him because of his off-field characteristics’.

“I left it at its height, and I was the highest paid player in the league at the time, money talks.”

He was pushed into a corner and then tried to fight his way out by disrespecting two of the greatest indigenous rugby league players we have ever seen.

Mundine, still believing a conspiracy kept him out of representative jumpers in his rugby league days, took aim at Laurie Daley and the Immortal Arthur Beetson.

“How was he [Daley] Aboriginal? He didn’t claim to be Aboriginal, he was like this fella [Geale]. He never claimed to be Koori.”

The ageing boxer then implied the deceased Beetson was an “Uncle Tom”, before backing down when Kent asked, “Did you say Arthur Beetson was an Uncle Tom or not?”

Enough is enough.

Anthony Mundine you weren’t worthy of Australian jumpers or more State of Origin jumpers because you weren’t good enough. It is pretty simple.

You weren’t Kevin Walters, you weren’t Laurie Daley and you weren’t Brad Fittler.

You weren’t even Trent Barrett.

Paul Kent got you in a corner and you did the only thing you know how to do. You cried foul and disrespected people.

You took aim at your own people. The same people you say love him and respect you.

You took a shot at Arthur Beetson, a man who isn’t here to defend himself or fire back.

The point is quite simple. Mundine was an average footballer, an above average boxer and a champion salesman.

Hopefully tonight is the last we see of him.

Anyone with any respect for rugby league and what men like Arthur Beetson did for our game will be hoping Geale puts Mundine down for good.

Great article. I get tired of Mundines voice of victim-ism in the media. I have never particularly liked his arrogance in the lead up to bouts but the guy was an embarrassment to boxing after his loss to Gaele. Gaele boxed rings around him but somehow Mundine could not see that. He is a sore loser and incapable of good sportsmanship. I would love to never see him again unless its watching Danny green knock him out.

Everyone has fallen for the PR bait carefully crafted by Mundine and his management to get everyone to dislike him or at least talk about him and his fights so that he is always in the media so sponsors get the dollars worth and he gets bottoms on seats at fitghts to cheer against him whether you like his opposition or not. Game Set Match to Mundine and crew. They laugh at all of us who have bought the spin, all the way to the bank!.

As much as some of what Anthony says makes me cringe, what makes me cringe even more is the overt racism of many of the people who will delight in seeing him get knocked out. Some of the stuff I have read on facebook has been horrific. Funnily alot of the people who are highly indignant about Mundine's questioning of the Aboriginality of Geale and Daley, are the same type of people who in the normal course of events make comments like "how can he be Aborginal, he is whiter than me".

you and I dunno what Mundine went through as an individual from his childhood to his sportsman life, thats why i dont want to judge him. Am sure though that he has witnessed some type of discrimination, against him, family members or other ppl of the aboriginal community. Look at at the example i wrote before and tell me it doesnt happen in this country. There is also a great doco caleed 'the tall man". might help you chnage your mind. Doesnt mean that i dont see that AM talks garbage sometimes, thats not the issue.

Please don't ever compare mundine to ALI. Ali had a reason to protest, etc because of what he went through as an individual....What's mundines reason? Just because he pretended to train under water doesn't mean his Ali. His just a guppy saying ridiculous things to try and get his name in the paper as much as possible.

What he just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in his rambling, incoherent response was he even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

"Uncle Tom is an american term" So is redneck, the "N" word, etc, doesnt stop Australians from using these "American terms", I suggest you pick up a book or two on the history of Australia and its treatment of Aboriginal Peoples for some perspective. Either that or stop saying American terms, stop listening to American music, stop watching American Movies and stop using American Websites.

So when exactly did Mundine attack Beetson? Where is his quote (singular) on his attack of a dead icon.

So what? There are huge similarities between the oppression of African-Americans and Australian Indigenous people. We rip many 'Americanisms' off. I feel a bit dumber after reading your post.

As a boxing fan, and no fan of rugby league, I have to point out that I believe Paul Kent got his facts wrong in his desire to bait Mundine at the press conference. He stated that Ambrose Palmer was an 'Aboriginal boxer' who played AFL. Ambrose Palmer was certainly a very good boxer, and played AFL, but I've never heard anyone suggest he was Aboriginal before. Made Mundine sound stupider than he was, by implying that he hadn't heard of an Aboriginal fighter who'd achieved the same thing. I thought that was a bit shoddy from a journalist. As far as his league career goes, I couldn't care less what sort of a league player he was, or what he said to offend the NRL aristocracy. It was all a very long time ago. I would point out, though, that at his best, he's been a much better boxer than most Australians give him credit for - and the people who fume about his lack of respect for rugby league have always been pretty reluctant to give him any.

Uncle Tom is an american term and relates specifically to African Americans and what they went through in AMERICA. Mundine is not Ali and needs to think of his own punchlines and stop ripping off all the americans he see's. No matter who wins tonight, We are all dumber for having heard him speak.

Righto you're free to believe in what ever you want, but its pretty obvious you're biased in your beliefs concerning Mundine. "Mundine is the man Australia loves to hate because he is a fraud. He will never be remembered as a pugilist, he will be remembered as an idiot who served his Islamic masters from SW Sydney." Yeah right, thats not hateful or extreme is it.

Tbh I don't think he directly attacked AB. It was a general comment on some aboriginals embracing the rules and policies set by others. Mundine said no when asked if he meant that AB was an uncle Tom. Ali has made such remarks in the past, and much worse, and I don't think many ppl would label him an embarrassment for the American nation. Mass media always jump at the smallest line that can be interpreted as an attack when it comes from a controversial character. Am not surprised many are extrapolating about it. And am not a Mundine fan. I just want to see a great boxing bout tonight.
