Surprise selections and omissions in the Indian tour squad

By Sports Nut / Roar Rookie

Recently the 17-man Test squad for Australian’s tour of India was announced. The selectors have chosen some rather interesting selections for this up coming tour with Steve Smith, Mosies Henriques and Xavier Doherty part of the 17.

I hear others saying that Glenn Maxwell was a surprise selection.

Well, to me he wasn’t as much of a surprise as the others, due to the fact that the public at least got given hints from other team mates as well as the coach that his bowling was improving.

Come to think of it, Doherty’s name was dropped once or twice as well.

Taking only one wicketkeeper is an interesting choice. If it was up to me I would have taken another one in the place of maybe Smith.

And no it wouldn’t have been Brad Haddin.

I was very surprised that Chris Rogers didn’t get picked as a spare opener, in case Warner doesn’t come good.

Having said that I think the selectors think that without Warner they would still have Ed Cowan, Shane Watson and Philip Hughes who could all open. The problem with that is Hughes is mostly focusing on batting at number three now and he needs to kick on and make big scores.

Either way, while Rogers may have missed selection, she should work hard and press his case for a trip to England. His experience over there may be a big factor in his favour.

And maybe the same could be said for David Hussey if he makes more runs for Victoria.

D. Hussey should have played Test Cricket years and years ago, but of course the selectors ignored him. Now it looks like he may never wear the Baggy Green, through no fault of his own.

It maybe a little late for him now that is for sure. But for awhile there he was in as good enough form as Brad Hodge years ago.

I do tend to agree with you he isn't in good enough form at the moment that is for sure.

And by the way I forgot to include O'Keefe to replace Doherty I think that would have been a nice one. Also I forgot to mention Alex Doolan he must have been close to going as a spare opener. The good thing with Doolan also is he is a part time wicketkeeper so if an injury poped up on Wade and they didn't send a second one then they could have had this option. However they proberly think if Wade gets injured they could send a replacement for him over in India or something.

Yes, Chris Rogers for Ed Cowan. But selectors don't like Rogers, so Ed Cowan will play.

We need in-form players not out of form. David Hussey is a good player but nowadays he is out of form. Every team of the world need in-form players. Ben Cutting should have been in squad on the place for Smith. Victory of Australia is a big thing for everyone.

The selectors didn't ignore David Hussey. He was never in good enough form when a spot was available. He could easily have slotted into the Test side for the rest of this year if he had scored any runs but again he fell short. And his inconsistent performance in limited overs matches for Australia suggests that it is unlikely he would have been a good Test player anyway.
