Allan Border Medal 2013: live blog, updates

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

Michael Clarke will look to make it two titles in a row at the Allan Border Medal which will be held on Monday at Melbourne.

We’ll bring you the live coverage of the action from the Allan Border Medal from 8.30 pm AEDT.

Apart from the Cricketer of the Year award, there will also be prizes for the Test player of the year, one-day international player of the year, T20 international player of the year, domestic player of the year, Bradman young cricketer of the year and the Belinda Clark Award for best female cricketer.

The cricketers and WAGs will make it to the red carpet before the votes will be counted and the winners announced. These votes will will come from fellow players, officials and journalists, who will vote for the player performances over the past 12 months.

While Clarke will be a favourite to win the award, he is only the second-highest scorer in that voting period of February 25, 2012 to January 28, 2013, behind Dave Warner. Of course he has a much better average – 61 to Warner’s 38 – and that should put him on a pedestal to win it again.

Shane Watson will be a front-runner to win the T20 cricketer of the year award after his four successive man-of-the-match awards in the World T20 apart from Clarke being favourite to make a clean sweep of the ODI and Test player of the year.

We hope to receive your opinions as the Allan Border Medal action unfolds at Melbourne.

Really, after the kind of year that Clarke has had, there wasn't too much doubt about his win. And it was not even close. Clarke tallied 198 votes, while Hussey, Watson and Warner were at 165, 165 and 148 respectively!

And Michael Clarke has easily trumped competition from Dave Warner, Shane Watson and Michael Hussey to win the Allan Border Medal as well!

Clarke's beats off the challenge from Michael Hussey, Matthew Wade and Mitchell Johnson to scoop that Test cricketer award. He had 22 votes in his kitty to Hussey's 15, Wade's 12 and Johnson's 11.

Kim Hughes will present the Test Player of the Year award. Can you see anyone but Michael Clarke winning this one?

A rousing speech from Ricky Ponting is followed by the counting of votes to decide the Test Cricketer of the Year.

Of course, after a good-natured ribbing about his batting, Glenn McGrath is inducted into the Cricket Australia Hall of Fame. My surmise is that it is to do with his bowling.

Here's an interesting piece of trivia from the 2006 Allan Border Medal awards. Andrew Symonds, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee and Adam Gilchrist all drew on 22 votes for the 2006 One Day Player of the Year award. On a count-back, Andrew Symonds would have been a winner but he was ruled ineligible because he was suspended for two ODIs for one of his off-field problems. There was a second count-back and Michael Hussey won the award!

It's a collection of Tony Greig photographs displayed now, celebrating his life. Greig passed away late last year after having been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier. Poignant moment.

Jess Cameron, Australia's wicket-keeper, has won the Belinda Clarke Women's Cricketer of the Year award. She's currently in India, playing in the World Cup... ...and would you believe it? She scored a duck in her last ODI innings as well! Whoa!

As an after-thought, Queensland's Joe Burns did not make it to the award ceremony because of first class commitments. I am assuming it was the same with Khawaja too.

Phil Hughes has won the Domestic Player of the Year award. Not too much of a surprise here given that his domestic resurrection has gone a long way in getting him an international recall.

Incidentally, Shane Watson was a three-time ODI Player of the Year award winner leading up to tonight. Well done Clint!

It was a very close contest for the ODI Player of the Year award. McKay had 30 votes during the voting period - February 25, 2012-January 28, 2013. Bailey and Warner ended just behind with 28 votes!

Burns wasn't there to collect his award because of his Shield commitments. The interesting bit is that in the last List A game he played day before he got a duck! He can well point to Maxwell for scoring a blob in yesterday's ODI and then earning a million bucks at the IPL auction. Talk of good luck charms!
