Aussie Tom Rogic helps Celtic brush Inverness 3-1

By News / Wire

A makeshift Celtic side swept aside nearest challengers Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3-1 on Saturday to open up a massive 18-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League.

With one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first-leg clash with Juventus, Neil Lennon made nine changes to the side that faced Raith Rovers last weekend with debuts for new signings Rami Gershon and Australian international Tomas Rogic.

There were also rare starts for Paddy McCourt, Marcus Fraser and Dylan McGeouch, while goalkeeper Fraser Forster made his return from a neck injury.

Lennon’s decision looked to have backfired when Inverness, who had defeated Celtic in Glasgow earlier in the season, took an early lead through Nick Ross.

But the Hoops hauled themselves level in the 20th minute when former Central Coast Mariner Rogic set up Kris Commons to hammer home the equaliser.

Fellow debutant Gershon headed Celtic in front for the first time in the 48th minute before Miku wrapped up the scoring in the 82nd minute as Lennon’s selection gamble ultimately paid off ahead of their against the Italian league leaders at Parkhead.

“I think you saw a wee glimpse of what’s coming through. Marcus Fraser, Dylan McGeouch and Rogic are young players and I thought they were fantastic,” Lennon said.

“All in all, to come here against a team in second place with our first team out and to win speaks volumes for the performance of the players today.”

His opposite number Terry Butcher was frustrated to see his side lose their fourth straight match.

“I’m not disappointed with the way we played, I’m disappointed with the result and losing three goals,” the Inverness manager said.

Inverness took an early lead when Forster’s weak clearance from a dangerous Aaron Doran cross only made it as far as the edge of the box, where Ross was on hand to drill a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

Rogic was looking assured on his Celtic debut and had a big hand in their 20th-minute equaliser.

The Australian international broke to the byeline before cutting the ball back for team-mate Commons to rifle a thunderous strike beyond Ryan Esson and into the roof of the net.

Rogic then came close to opening his Celtic account as the midfielder clipped an effort just over after being teed up by Anthony Stokes.

Elsewhere, Motherwell missed the chance to move into second as they lost 2-0 away to Kilmarnock, while Dundee United moved up to sixth as new boss Jackie McNamara marked his league debut with a 3-1 win over Hearts, and Aberdeen’s clash with St Mirren ended goalless.

On Friday, Ross County won 2-0 at Dundee to leave the Dens Park club 14 points adrift at the foot.

Fuss, a fool and his money are soon parted. Do you really think a pre-season friendly when one team has travelled half way around the world in a limited period of time really provides a good measure? I applaud the support of your team but your cash is mine!!!!!!

I hope it was good match Fuss. Was this match played during the off season for either side? This was the line up for the match against victory: Celtic starting line-up - Lukasz ZALUSKA, Adam MATTHEWS, Daniel MAJSTROVIC, Georgios SAMARAS, Kris COMMONS, Kelvin WILSON, KI Sung-Yueng, Paddy McCOURT, Thomas MULGREW, Beram KAYAL, Gary HOOPER Bench: Scott BROWN, Anthony STOKES, CHA Du-Ri, Joe LEDLEY, Daryl MURPHY, Richie TOWELL I'm not well educated on the matters of Celtic but I thought beating Barcelona 2-1 was an almighty effort and if victory can stand tall against Celtic and Celtic against Barcelona then i'm a happy A-league chap. Is there much of a difference between the side I provided against victory and side against Barcelona? Celtic line up: 01 Forster 02 Matthews 04 Ambrose 06 Wilson 21 Mulgrew 23 Lustig (Watt - 72' ) 15 Commons 16 Ledley 67 Wanyama 07 Miku Booked 09 Samaras (Kayal - 79' )Substitutes 24 Zaluska 44 Fraser 20 McCourt 31 Herron 33 Kayal 46 McGeouch 32 Watt Versing Barcelona: 01 Valdes 02 Alves 15 Bartra (Pique - 71' ) 18 Alba Booked 06 Xavi 08 Iniesta 10 Messi 14 Mascherano 25 Song Booked (Fabregas - 71' ) 09 Sanchez (Villa - 67' ) 17 PedroSubstitutes 13 Pinto 03 Pique 19 Montoya 04 Fabregas 12 Jonathan 07 Villa 37 Cristian Tello Upon reflection, my thoughts have changed but I don't know how Celtic pulled off the win against Barcelona!? I still believe Tom Rogic made a great move though.

Celtic came to Melbourne & played MVFC before the start of the 2011/12 season. The final score was MVFC 0-1 Celtic. The match was evenly poised. And, this was an MVFC team that was a shambles during the A-League season. I'd be more than happy to put money on MVFC if we played Celtic tomorrow.

Adrian, Didn't Celtic beat Barcelona last year? Do you honestly think an A-league club would have a fighting chance? How many players from the A-league play regularly for the national team? I don't discount your argument but in an argument you'll only seek the evidence to justify your opinion. You should not discount other statistics for i'm sure anyone could easily provide justifiable reasoning as to why Celtic (maybe not SPL entirely) are way better than all A-League teams here. I believe the A-League can scale the heights of SPL but Celtic are,out of the equation, in my opinion.

Brian, I agree with you. And I'm the one who compared CCM with Celtic only because Rogic moved from one to the other and both clubs are the best in their respective countries. Yes Celtic dwarf the rest of the the SPL and yes there are A league clubs better than some SPL clubs. I just think having watched both the SPL remains at level above that of the A League, for now. I'm in no doubt the will change in time. The A league is rapidly improving, which is great, as an Australian resident it adds to my enjoyment of football here in Australia.

:)))))) Armenia Have you you every been to Armenia ? it so poor if Armenia been in the AFC and not UEFA, would you had said the same thing ? Yes, countries, that are smaller then New Zealand , and way poor then New Zealand, should be better then New Zealand, but a less, the ranking not say this Oh Ya, Armenia, is in UEFA, it is good team ya, Uzbekistan is in AFC, it must be not good team, ya

Ok Adrian, you got me. I'm sure New Zealand could finish in the the top 3 of a European qualifying group for the World Cup if they had to. Plllease ! Armenia would whoop their bottoms.

"Statistics and rankings can cloud people’s judgement sometimes." as to watching 10 or so games a year, and knowing how good every team iin the World s or isn't :) yes, New Caledonia beat New Zealand , and you have use that one Statistic (score) to pass judgment ,:) a lest ranting use all matches played by every national team in the world to pass judgment ,

Adrian you make too much out of FIFA rankings. Use your common sense as well. Who did New Zealand (Let's leave Australia out of it for now) beat recently to attain their ranking? They got knocked out by New Caledonia in the semi of the Oceania Nations Cup. Do you really think they are better than a middle tier European team like Austria or Israel? Statistics and rankings can cloud people's judgement sometimes. As for watching Austrian BL matches....yes I do from time to time on live stream. I have connections with Austria. I spent the first 14 years of my life there. And I can tell you comparing it to the A-League in a 10 team vs 10 team league match up, the AUT BL is technically and tactically superior in the top 5 of the table.

I can't tell you the future of the Austrian national team, but i can tell you the past Austria is rated 63 in the world by ELO ranting with 1570pts November 15, 2011 Austria is rated 69 in the world, with 1551 October 12 2010 Austria is rated 58 in world with 1586 October 12 2005 Austria is rated 53 in world with 1634 February 23 2000 Austria is 43 with 1663pts maybe they go up and up, but last 13 year, they are down down down why do you think, the standards out side of the top 4 Austrian league teams , the standard higher then the A-league ?, do you watch these teams play? when we see a team like Wellington Phoenix, that is at this point in time, 2nd last in 2012-13 A-League , Wellington Phoenix has 6 New Zealand internationals in it team a national team that is rated higher then Austria, a National team that played at the last world cup, which we all got to see New zealand not lose a game So, if Harnik,Alaba,Arnautovic,Fuchs,Proedl genuine world class , why then is Austria national not as good as New Zealand in International football ? and not even close to Australia...maybe, you can only be world class, if your born with a EU passport, and have right to work (play football) in the EU? Austrian Bundesliga Israel Ligat ha'Al Scotland Premier League are not a higher stranded then the A-league

The Austrian national team is on the way up again. They have about 14 players in the German Bundesliga with some genuine world class players like Harnik,Alaba,Arnautovic,Fuchs,Proedl etc.. Israel is going through a rough patch but they still have plenty of first teamers all around Europe unlike Australia. If I was asked 6 years ago, I would have definitely ranked Australia ahead of Austria and Israel but at the moment the picture is not so clear. As far as the leagues go....Israel usually has 4 strong teams including Hapoel Tel Aviv, Maccabi Haifa. Austria has Rapid Vienna, Austria Vienna, Red Bull Salzburg and Sturm Graz. Outside of those teams the standard does drop off. But these teams are still a notch above A-League standards in my opinion. But given some time and with the HAL extending its season to a 36 round competition and through importing quality coaching from Europe we can close the gap in due course.

yes, , but your talking about 1 or 2 team from each league but those same teams that play in europa league, also win there local leagues year after year after year ..big gaps between first and last in those league, where with the a-league , you never know who will win it not about the league you play in, but for which team you play in The Austria, Israel national team, are well below Australia national team Elo world football rankings Australia 24 Israel 52 New Zealand 55 Austria 62 why is it, a league full of Austrian's or a league full of Israel players..is some how better then league full of Australia and New Zealand players, when there National teams are not better? i don't get this view New Zealand, we also look at Kiwi and see a non football country, but this non football counties players, made a world cup, and didn't lose a match there, and this non football team is ranked about the same as Israel , Austria ..wouldn't it stand to reason, that a National Kiwi player running around in the A-league, is as good as a Austrian or Israel player , playing in there local leagues?

Yes I would. But no disrespect to the HAL. Austria,Cyprus and Israel have competitive leagues whose teams consistently perform well in Europe considering their budgets. In particular in the Europa League. I wonder sometimes how far our HAL teams would get in the EL assuming they would have to start from the 1. or 2. qualifying round. I would hope they do well but I do wonder who would come out on top if they were matched up with teams from these countries.

Let's not get too excited. The SPL is a farce of the highest order. It was when Rangers were still there but now even more so.

agga78 there so many factors in player here ...Age, paspport , money , manger ...both McGlinchey, Paartalu where 21, 23 year old , coming back home , it likely they would get better ....you could just as well look up the ave Australians, who no body heard about playing in SPL Liam Miller, why did he have a ave CV?, he started every SPL game for 2 seasons , hibs Qual for 3rd Round of Europa 2010-11 season, he played full 180 min of there Europa Qual ? i don't understand how that ave ? UEFA league ranking in Europe (not inc 2nd div leagues ) 15 Austria 26.325 16 Cyprus 25.499 1 17 Israel 22.000 18 Scotland 21.14 19 Czech Republic 20.350 1 20 Poland 19.916 21 Croatia 18.874 would you say, Austria, Cyprus, Israel , are also better leagues then the A-league

Gary Smith why is there no way the A-league is strong as the SPL ? what do you base this on? SPL is full of 2nd string Scottish players , Scotland 1st string players, don't even play in Scotland , they play in England (37 out 50 players, called up to play for Scotland in the last 12 months, play out side of Scotland ) do you believe Scotland 2nd, 3rd string players are some how better then Australia's 2nd ,3rd string players, who are playing in the A-league? Scotland National team is ranked Fifa 69 ELO 48 Australia Fifa 36 ELO 22 please, give are ignorance something to base the facts on Celtic , yes , i believe Celtic is a better team then every A-league club, but not by a long way...If Celtic was playing in the A-league, i think they would win, but Celtic would not win by as much as it does in SPL,two or three bad games (luck) and Celtic wouldn't win the A-league and 100% wouldn't be able to play 9 new players vs the 2nd team in the table at home, and win with so much easy
