Neill booed, Sydney FC beaten in A-League

By Sam Lienert / Roar Guru

Lucas Neill has been repeatedly booed and Sydney FC soundly beaten as Melbourne Heart gave the Socceroos skipper an unpleasant A-League debut.

The Heart won 3-1 at AAMI Park on Sunday to climb to fifth spot, while the Sky Blues fell to seventh on goal difference.

Compounding a bad day, Sydney lost striker Joel Griffiths to hamstring tightness and defender Sebastian Ryall to a red card.

Neill had said pre-game he was happy to play the part of a “pantomime villain” and it turned out that way, as Heart fans jeered him when his name was announced and whenever he touched the ball, after he backtracked on an indication he would join their club.

One fan held up a sign labelling him a rat.

But the AAMI Park crowd quickly found plenty to cheer about, as the 34-year-old debutant and his fellow defenders proved unable to resist the Heart’s attack.

Nick Kalmar and Jonathan Germano scored five minutes apart in the first half.

The game was effectively over 10 minutes into the second half when Ryall was ejected for dragging down David Williams in the penalty box and Williams converted from the spot.

Griffiths replied for the visitors before being subbed off injured.

Sydney coach Frank Farina said his side’s defence had been a problem all season but that Neill had shown enough to suggest he could help.

“It was a bit of a baptism of fire for him coming into this game but I’m relatively pleased and he’ll just get better,” Farina said.

“But we as a team have to improve.”

Neither Heart coach John Aloisi nor assistant Hayden Foxe shook Neill’s hand post-game, with Foxe walking straight past the Socceroos captain while Aloisi said he didn’t see him.

Aloisi was delighted with his own team, although said they frittered chances to win even more comfortably.

The match drew 13,752 spectators, the Heart’s biggest non-derby crowd ever, attracted no doubt by the presence of Neill and Alessandro Del Piero, who announced during the week he would continue with Sydney next season.

It was the Heart’s fifth straight home win but they’ve lost six straight away, a streak they aim to end against bottom-placed Wellington in Dunedin next Sunday.

“We’ll enjoy the win tonight but we’ll focus straight away on the Wellington trip and we’ll put this away record to bed,” Aloisi said.

I have said it before a team that leaks so many Goals and/or is unstable, will always no matter what be a team you can't take seriously for the title. Seen this, so many times in 18 years I spent in Europe. I use to follow the main 10 Football Championships around around Europe and there was always a title contender that got beaten a few times in a row and even thrashed, but when the transfer market opened they made adjustments, even sacked coaches. Yes there was allot of progress but when the going get's tough they get beaten and sometimes even thrashed again. Even thou we do have the Finals Series how many times have the Premieres lost the Grand Final? Only 3 times (CCM 2x's and ADUTD 1x). And when they did it was always to the second placed team. It just goes to show that a consistent team will always stand up when the going gets tough. But I have said it before, I doubt we will see the CCM win the finals this year. They just seem to have that Ghost of the finals haunting them.

"SFC where about to move their home games to Leichhardt Oval" Really? "it’s also labeled the Peoples club" Absolutely, while they are on the FFA books, it honestly feels like we all own them. "get nicky carle back." 100% agree

Completely agree with your statement: "...Marquees work best in big cosmopolitian markets..." And seeing that the Greek community in Melbourne is enormous what about signing the great: Giorgos Karagounis That man was outstanding when he played with Benfica and is still going hard at Fulham FC.

Sydney FC's problem is my view is it's policy, completely disorganized and desperate for attention. And now that the Peoples club is here things have just gotten worse for SFC, but ADP was a great move that might of saved SFC for now. Let's not forget that SFC where about to move their home games to Leichhardt Oval due to the lack of financial conditions to play in SFS. Western Sydney Wanderers FC are the complete opposite of what SFC are, it's also labeled the Peoples club and history tells us that the most successful clubs in the world in majority are the peoples club, time will tell thou...

Sydney had better improve a lot even if they only play Perth. That was, by any standards,a pretty awful performance against Melb Heart. You can't be A1 one week and C- the next. Well, you can but you won't get very far. Same goes for Victory. Lots of excuses being trotted out for them after the pasting by the Mariners. At least Ange had the honesty to admit they were rubbish.

JA is a legend in Aus football, however as a player he did very little for Sydney and even less for MH. I'm happy with Sydnes progress. A good midfield general, minus Emerton an McFlyn and we will be in top 4. Jason C has cocked his own goos. Rule number 1 the boss is always right. I did not like Farina, however I am beginning to respect him more and more. Don't worry, SFC will be there in the finals. I'm going to Perth on Friday for the game. Should be a cracker.

mice Theres no rocket science in this. Marquees work best in big cosmopolitian markets. A Marquee work's better in a big cosmopolitian market if he has wide International appeal eg Del Piero. They work better again in big Cosmopolitian markets if they appeal to one of the traditional football supporting communities in Austrailia eg Italians- Del Piero. They work better if the team is cooking with gas. Signs are that if not this season ,next season they will be under John Aloisi. Heart are competing with an already established club in Victory who grabbed the bulk of wannabe A-League fans in Melbourne initially, had some success making it harder for MH to be noticed as the new boy. However as you say , MV didn't grab all the fans, you know others passionately involved. The marquee is the honey for these fans ,John Aloisi & the lad will have to do the rest.

Not too sue about that Tezza. Maybe he didn't want to be seen standing in a dustbin in front of a portable school room at Latrobe Bundoora. Probably not a good look for the Australian Captain.

Totally agree Towser. Plenty of fans out there if we can attract them. I know many people who have been involved in the game some very passionately but getting them to come to A League games is a real struggle. Little by little the game in this country and the A League is winning them over. If Melbourne Heart could get hold of a quality Marquee player we would surely see more crowds like last night.

I think Heart should go for that more relaxed, family friendly fan. The jazz band was a nice touch. Drop the seat trashing antics and don't try and outdo the Victory when it comes to taking yourselves too seriously. I think both SFC and Heart can be that more mainstream, market, just a good vibe, good football, and a few star attractions.

It was a great game to be a Heart fan and thanks to Mr Del Piero we had a great crowd. Really good atmosphere and just shows the value of a good Marquee player to the league. It is to be hoped that some of the fans that came to see Alessandro Del Piero will have enjoyed the A League enough to continue coming to Melbourne Heart games. The booing of Lucas Neill was a bit of fun but what did he expect. He was probably always going to go to Sydney but used Melbourne Heart to help to negotiate a better pay deal.
