Aussies have ego problem: Jadeja

By Greg Buckle / Roar Guru

India spinner Ravindra Jadeja says Australia’s batsmen get themselves out on Indian pitches because they’re too impatient and their egos are too big.

The tourists will resume on the final day of the first Test at 9-232 in their second innings, leading by only 40 runs with one wicket in hand.

Allrounder Moises Henriques is on 75 with No.11 Nathan Lyon on eight.

Jadeja says while the pitch is wearing and favouring spin, Australia’s shot-making has been a major factor in dismissals.

“The difference between the English batsmen (who beat India 2-1 in December) and the Australians is the English guys are a lot more patient,” Jadeja told reporters on Monday night.

“If we bowl maidens to the Australians, they have an ego.

“If we contain them for four overs, we feel like they will play a rash shot.

“That’s what we’re expecting from them.”

No.6 batsman Matthew Wade was bowled in eight by spinner Harbhajan Singh after missing with an ambitious slog-sweep shot on Monday.

However it could be argued the super-confident Virat Kohli (107) — going through with the stroke despite not being to the pitch of the ball — played a rash shot with a mis-timed slog to mid-on from the bowling of offspinner Nathan Lyon during India’s first innings.

Jadeja's comment is actually a case of "lost in translation" in the far reaches of his mind. Aussies & for that matter, Indians, shouldn't assume Jadeja's command over English and what he probably meant was that Aussie batsmen are stubborn in maintaining their positive mindset in the face of extreme adversity and sometimes, ground reality. "Ego" was an easy 3-letter word to use.

Smith is a proper shot playing opener,Gayle & Sehwag are more likely to get out,by the time all three retire Smith will have more runs then Gayle or Sehwag

Cowan and Warner are potentially a great opening pair. Wade should be at 7 with khawaja batting in the top 6 replacing either siddle or starc. Lyon gets one more chance... -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

I'm sorry to say but Warner for me is too loose for a opener in test cricket, how about khawaja & Cowan for an opening pair?,both are solid & more likely to score hundreds in future

Spot on dasilva - the Indians would love our batsmen to be rabbits trapped in the headlights , rather than attacking their bowlers .

Unfortunately this Aussie team has the intent to fight but is lacking in skills. Australia was the number 1 team in the world for nearly a decade and the next best team was not even close...maybe that is at the back of their minds every time they play a team that they easily beat at home. Hopefully in the next Test match, Australia will make some changes...here is my team selection Ed Cowan David Warner Usman Khawaja Shane Watson Michael Clarke Mathew Wade Moise Henriques Mitchel Johnson James Pattinson Xavier Doherty Mitchell Starc

See Pietersen, K. All the same things were said after the first test when KP scored 17 & 2, getting out to rash shots both times. In the second test KP scored 186 and England won in 4 days. And if we're talking egos, then they don't come much larger than our enemy Kevin. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

I think Ravindra Jadeja might just want to rein it in a little. Time and time again, Indian squads come to Australia and continually and arrogantly assume that the pitches will be slow and low. Surprise surprise when they play the first test, they are usually WALLOPED.

I think this is just a bit of mindgames and a bit of reverse psychology The indian team would love it if the Australian batsman get into a scoring hole surrounded by fielders to the spinners.

Bit harsh on Clarke. He's prepared to dig in and grind out the runs when he has to.

Dhoni's 1st ball had no good technique in it. Did you see it? So you can slog sometimes if you have a good technique? You don't see any contradictions there?

They do have egos. They all think they can walk out there and play big booming cover drives and powerful slog sweeps from the word go. Maybe back home against a lacklustre Sri Lanka they can, but this is the ultimate test, cricket's final frontier. Now is the time to dig in and play some seriously hard and gritty cricket. When you're in the form of your life like Michael Clarke, then you can carry your ego and play your shots, but if you've got a dozen tests under your belt and a test average under 40, I don't think you can afford to charge down the wicket and try put Harbajan back over his head for a lofted six to long off.

Hang on, Dhoni has a good technique? Could have fooled me. I'd classify it as unorthodox but effective. Far from textbook though.

Given that English most likely his second or third language, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But agreed on hating losing to them.

Based on what his trying to say, it sounds like he is conveying that Australians don't have patience. I'm not sure why he used the words "they have an ego"....makes absolutely no sense in the context of his comments! I honestly hate losing to this mob.

dhoni is of the old school of ponting and even clarke, players who were brought up and taught how to play and who had good technique so they are able to slog sometimes and amass huge totals. most australian players nowadays have rubbish technique focusing more on hitting the ball hard and far. the players are no good at leaving balls that should be left which is the difference between scoring 30 odd and 130 odd

Jadeja's captain slogged his way to a double ton, including a reckless big swish on his first ball. Who has the ego?

Its Ponting & co who won 3 world cups scoring at a dominating run rate in both test & ODI's,but Aust need to realise its rebuild mode with an exception of M Clarke who is in a league of Ponting & co at their best,on the other hand SA is pure class.
