Brisbane Roar v Melbourne Victory: A-League live scores, blog

By Vince Rugari / Expert

Ange Postecoglou makes appearance number two as the enemy at Suncorp Stadium as his Melbourne Victory side tackles Brisbane Roar in another game that will shape the A-League finals. We’ll have live updates through the match from 7.45pm AEDT.

The last time the former Roar mentor paid a visit to his old stomping ground, things were very different – back when Brisbane were invincible and Victory a shambles.

That was round two. It ended 5-0 in the Roar’s favour and it was thought they were surefire title candidates. The tables have turned.

It ended up being Melbourne, who eventually grasped the key tenets of ‘Angeball’, setting up camp in the top half of the table while Brisbane were brought back down to earth with a shocking thud.

Mike Mulvey is in charge now and while there have been flashes of that trademark swagger from the reigning champions, the side is still wildly inconsistent and is far from a finals certainty.

Meanwhile, Victory straightened up with a 5-0 pasting of Newcastle last week but one more failure and they’ll be all but out of the title race.

The side that revolutionised the A-League against the team trying to write the sequel to that success. With so much on the line this could be a classic.

yep i know MV won the double twice. its too bad you failed at the final hurdle and became the first team to host a grand final and lose it. quite an achievement. epic fail. still not even in the same class as actually going back to back. even your coach said how extraordinary it was. you missed that point of course. Brisbane chronically outplayed MV in the 2nd half. you only played as well as we allowed you. its ok, i know you're hurting as you were expecting a win. but you just can't admit it. all these comments because you can't say you had a legitimate draw. MV dead last in two ACL campaigns. 4th out of 4. terrible record.

"We (BRI) actually won the GF (and 2nd by 2 points) the year after winning the double" MVFC has won the double TWICE. The year after winning our 2nd double, MVFC came 2nd by 1 point & lost the GF on penalties. ... And, we've won a game in the ACL every time we've qualified. After 660 minutes of ACL football, poor Brisbane Roar still hasn't worked out how to win a game against Asian opposition .. and, who knows when Brisbane will get another chance.

a number of MV fan boys who claimed a thrashing was coming our way for both the last two games that ended in 1-1 draws. Archie was supremely confident after last week's game and talked up their charge to the grand final. we have been off the pace this year, which should have resulted in MV, who have been top 3 most of the year playing your brilliant brand of football as you say, spanking us. but it never eventuated. Fuss, you just cant say Brisbane outplayed you in the 2nd half. That's all you have to acknowledge. And of course MV fans in your vein say "MV played badly" MV never get beaten by an opposition, its always MV played badly. You were only allowed to play the way you did because of how Brisbane played. Blah blah - we went back to back. Surely you know how hard that is. Even Ange said in the Courier Mail this week how most clubs who can actually win one barely back up for the finals the next year. We actually won the GF (and 2nd by 2 points) the year after winning the double and it was extraordinary in Ange's words. he also said its not surprising there has been a let down based on his previous comments. (this is where you make excuses of premiership v grand final, knock out comps and divert the conversation) and questioning Kellet of supporting since a big event such as the 2011 grand final is your sly way of trying to insult him. we all know it. MV's record against the top four this year plus the Roar is not that flash. really its not.

Roarsome - a pretty fair comment all across the board but the eternal (this season) "hope" is still there when you say " goals to come".We've been saying that for weeks now and have yet to see an improvement in that statistic and although there was much more "shooting" going on in this "feast of football entertainment" there is still that lingering doubt as to when your "forecast" will happen. We have been playing almost half a year now and still the goal drought continues. Reasons??? When Berisha has to go foraging back into midfield to get things moving the ball invariably goes wide to Steff,Hingert, Broich or Franjic and when they whip their crosses into the danger area there is no one there. This is a balance problem caused by midielders not taking up a more advanced role when Berisha has withdrawn so the crosses are in fact ineffectual,a cardinal sin in football, a waste of time and effort. We keep hoping. jb

I do not recall EVER saying that and unless you want to search through my 997 comments to find it and prove me wrong then I would appreciate it if you didn't make such accusations! BTW I know BRFC/QRFC are, were the same club, thank you captain obvious. You said - "5 years – over half a decade – since Brisbane Roar won a game against MVFC in Melbourne." That statement was wrong for the same club Brisbane Roar/QLD Roar has never won as Brisbane Roar in Melbourne. Wouldn't that just kinda add to the fact I haven't been following since that Grand Final win!

Well, if you want to make a distinction between Brisbane Roar and Qld Roar, then .. Brisbane Roar has NEVER - repeat NEVER - beaten MVFC in Melbourne. Brisbane Roar/Qld Roar ... it's the same club; just a different name. Did you not say you started following A-League after the 2011 Grand Final?

Brisbane Roar or Queensland Roar?? Because if it was "5 years - over half a decade - since Brisbane Roar (you mean Queensland Roar) won a game against MVFC in Melbourne?" You do remember they changed their name in 2009 of May, not 2008 or 2007! So I actually was following the A-League when back that far, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

"Melbourne victory currently are pretenders for they’re talking themselves to play good enough football to win the championship." This is too funny!! Brisbane Roar has been sitting in the bottom half of the table for most of the year. Every time they lose their fans want to sack the coach; every time they win, their fans suggest Brisbane will win the Championship. The situation as it stands is that MVFC is 3rd on the table & guaranteed a 1st home final. Brisbane could be 2nd last by late Monday night & have a chance of being the 1st team to go from Championship to wooden spoon winners in consecutive years. In answer to your question, MVFC has not beaten CCM nor BRI this season. Of course, the biased nature of the fixture means we've played BRI & CCM twice AWAY from home this year & last year. Let's hope MVFC gets to play Brisbane twice in Melbourne for the next 2 years. In fact, the next time MVFC plays BRI at home next season it will have been over 5 years - over half a decade - since Brisbane Roar won a game against MVFC in Melbourne. So, Kellett_1992 you weren't even following A-league when Brisbane last won a game in Melbourne against MVFC!

Fuss, Besides Ian saying " we didnt cop a thrashing like they predicted." I believe everything he said is spot on. He said 2nd half, not 1st. Melbourne victory currently are pretenders for they're talking themselves to play good enough football to win the championship. And they're way off being GF contenders, spot on! For a season in which has not been one of the best for Brisbane and the season victory have had being well and truly better than last, you would think Melbourne could and probably should have beaten Brisbane at least once this year. Correct me if i'm wrong but is Brisbane one of the only teams, along side mariners that victory have not beaten?

"outplayed opposition something chronic in the 2nd half. they are pretty much pretenders and we didnt cop a thrashing like they predicted. their way off being GF contenders." And, yet, you couldn't do better than 1-1 at home? Mike Mulvey, quite rightly, observed Brisbane could have been blown away by half time if it weren't for Theo. And, MVFC weren't playing well! PS: Who predicted Brisbane would "cop a thrashing"? The bookies had Brisbane as favourites at around $1.75 & MVFC win was around $4.00.

outplayed opposition something chronic in the 2nd half. they are pretty much pretenders and we didnt cop a thrashing like they predicted. their way off being GF contenders. The Roar were great and MV barely could hang on. No BS about MV playing badly, they could only play that way because of the Roar's performance. 2. 5 years since MV have beaten the Roar and it will be 3 years before they get another chance. MV were overconfident after thrashing a ten man jets outfit players rested with two of their goals from spot kicks. Well done Brisbane. what happened to the handball decision we should have got? Go Brisbane Roar

Thankfully, I missed that match due to a prior function. Only MVFC match I've not seen - live or on TV - in the past couple of years.

Is that so? Well it's a good thing knock out is around the corner or some people may find it boring as the season is already over, even for Victory, well for the main prize that is.

I think Victory's worst performance was against Brisbane, round 2. What was the score? 5 - 0?

Within 24 hours Roar could also be 2 points off the bottom and, within 48 hours, Roar could slump to 8th on the ladder.

Disappointing performance by MVFC & very relieved with the result. Apart from 3-4 good chances, which account for a total of about 1 minute out of 94 minutes, that was the worst performance I've seen all year - other than the away game to CCM. Thank heavens, the opposition today were well below the standard of CCM that night in Gosford. Not sure what's going on with the lads, but the passing today was very sloppy & very little energy in midfield. Celeski has had a fantastic season but today he was anonymous & made some awful decisions. Let's hope it was the poor state of the pitch to blame for this effort. CCM's loss gave us a real opportunity to aim for 2nd, but we blew it.

Great game and a fair re.sult. Theo pulled off some great saves and in the second half the roar looked like they were going to run over the top of the victory. Pitch wasnt as bad as I had expected. Both sets of fans prabably leaving happy but if only.....

Best game I've seen from Brisbane in months. The hunger was there. Execution, particularly with crossing was poor but will improve. Goals to come as we beat a struggling CCM next week. Brisbane V Melbourne in the GF after Brisbane knock off CCM and MV do the same to WSW. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

Was thoroughly entertaining. Roar looked more incisive in 2nd half and MV did a good job of keeping them out. At times Broich seemed like he wanted to win it off his own bat.

Great game, I agree. Victory was deadly dangerous in the first half, and Brisbane were brilliant in the second half. Disappointed we didn't get three points, but Melbourne were very good defensively too. Cracking header Broxham, great finish by Franjic too.
