Top 20 rugby league players of the past 30 years

By Brisguy51 / Roar Rookie

I haven’t seen a list of the top 20 players in rugby league over the past 30 years, and so it’s time to set that right.

I’d be interested in what the criteria for such a list would include to ensure the best players are selected.

I’d have to think that in order to be included, the player would need at least the following criteria:

– Played in the ARL/NRL
– Played representative football.

So here is my list. I haven’t listed them in any order; it’s just a list from one to twenty of the best players in rugby league over the past 30 years.

If you’d like to offer changes or suggest other players I’d be interested in your views.

I will start with my list:

1 – Darren Lockyer (355 games for the Broncos, 36 State of Origins, 59 Tests for Australia)
2 – Arthur Beetson
3 – Mal Meninga
4 – Peter Sterling
5 – Brett Kenny
6 – Wally Lewis (though only for his efforts in SOO and Australia)
7 – Cameron Smith (but capable of rising in the list)
8 – Andrew Johns
9 – Billy Slater
10 – Steve Mortimer
11 – Bradley Clyde
12 – Greg Dowling
13 – Eric Grothe
14 – Michael Cronin
15 – Gene Miles
16 – Allan Langer
17 – Steve Roach
18 – Johnathan Thurston
19 – Bob McCarthy
20 – Graham Eadie.

I would be interested to hear what others have to say.

I find it interesting but odd that Wayne Pearce has not been mentioned yet?? He was so strategic and methodical not to mention super fit!! He played with an edgy toughness that surpassed many of his larger opponents!! I agree with most of your list but for Junior not to be included just is not Australian!!

the best team I think is 1 Darren Lockyer only because of his milestones 2 Andrew John's the best play maker the game has ever Seen he had an eye no one could compare to 3 Cameron smith he's the only player to ever win a premiership origin and Anzac test in 1 year 4 wally Lewis He was the king 5 Clive Churchill a very smart man 6 mal meninga one of the most lethalist players in attack and defence 7 billy Slater the best full back of all time 8 sonnybill Williams such a weapon all over the park 9 Jonathon Thurston the best goal kicker of all time and the best player in attack I've ever seen such a perfect line runner 10 Paul gallen such a great leader and a tough man 11 authur beetson had such heart for the game 12 Alan langer so cheeky in attack and 1 amazing little player 13 Greg inglis he's broken all the records in origin and hesbis the strongest carrier of the ball of all time 14 Danny buderous such a great experienced leader he was involved in everything 15 peter sterling took his team to numerous premierships and lead nsw and Australia from the front 16 cliff Lyons the best five eighth of all time 17 brad fittler in his time was the best player 18 Matthew gidley always produced the magic ball doe his team 19 Paul sironen 20 this is tough but I'll put in Anthony minichello because of his heart and of his bravery this year always putting his body on the line he has also played in six grand finals and only won 2 so that's a milestone on it's own Theres a lot more players to put in there but in time the list will the player I think that will be number 1 in 3/ years from now is James Maloney he is a great hole runner and great in defence he will play for Australia and will lead nsw to their first origin next year

Allan langer should be a lot higher. 4 premierships 34 origins 24 tests all at halfback. Most consistent player from1990 till 1999 and 87-89 he was an australian halfback managed to dominate origin in the early naughties. 1st man to captain his state country and club to comp victories in the same year. Seriously alf is the man

In my opinion hands down Paul gallen should be there he is the hardest working forward out there and continues to get better every game hes definetly the benchmark in the forwards and i find it hard to find a harder working forward over the past 30 years i understand theres alot of great forwards but week in and week out theres no one better the only one that gets close is shane webke also i honestly believe that lockier was and will always be the most clinical player of all time rarley having a bad game but always making the right desicions when needed its been my privledge to watch and admire these three players through out there career these 3 players dont need other quality players around them to stand out there work ethic on the field speaks for itself

Andrew Johns is a joke, He wouldn't even be in the top 50 on the field if it were not for him spending couple of fifty's of the field. This current QLD team contains at least 5 of the top 50 players over the past 30 years. Lockyer Smith Inglis Slater Cronk Thurston Should all be considered to be some of the best footballers to ever play the game.

Needs Fittler, he was for years battling back and forward with Andrew Johns as best player in the world. And Joey should be higher. Gallen should be in that list if Slater is

Greg Dowling was the first prop named for australia for a decade. Terry Lamb was always behind kenny and lewis. Only made the starting team in the mid week games.

Dont add Fittler hes no where near the top 20 players in the past 30 years same with Daley he was good but not in the top 20. Should be instead Ricky Stuart and Kevin Walters

Hazem el mazeri should be in there holding two league records for highest ever points for a player in a season and most goals kicked without missing

Backdoor Benny was a good playmaker but he wasn't that keen on tackling... I'd put my money on Walters in a tight spot and he was a pretty a pretty handy ball player as well... And if wallys in the side Alf has to be also if your pickin On position

billy slater is vulnerable in his postional play and defense? you have to be kidding me . haha mate get your sh*t together.. his try saving tackles and being in the right place and the right time, let alone his support play, is what has seen him pass Lockyers ability as a fullback.
