I haven’t seen a list of the top 20 players in rugby league over the past 30 years, and so it’s time to set that right.

I’d be interested in what the criteria for such a list would include to ensure the best players are selected.

I’d have to think that in order to be included, the player would need at least the following criteria:

– Played in the ARL/NRL
– Played representative football.

So here is my list. I haven’t listed them in any order; it’s just a list from one to twenty of the best players in rugby league over the past 30 years.

If you’d like to offer changes or suggest other players I’d be interested in your views.

I will start with my list:

1 – Darren Lockyer (355 games for the Broncos, 36 State of Origins, 59 Tests for Australia)
2 – Arthur Beetson
3 – Mal Meninga
4 – Peter Sterling
5 – Brett Kenny
6 – Wally Lewis (though only for his efforts in SOO and Australia)
7 – Cameron Smith (but capable of rising in the list)
8 – Andrew Johns
9 – Billy Slater
10 – Steve Mortimer
11 – Bradley Clyde
12 – Greg Dowling
13 – Eric Grothe
14 – Michael Cronin
15 – Gene Miles
16 – Allan Langer
17 – Steve Roach
18 – Johnathan Thurston
19 – Bob McCarthy
20 – Graham Eadie.

I would be interested to hear what others have to say.
