Australia's worst management leads to worst Test team

By Ash Lemson / Roar Rookie

Due to the sacking of four Australian Test players, we will be left with the worst Australian XI to ever take to the field.

We will probably have three all-rounders (Steve Smith, Moises Henriques and Glenn Maxwell), a wicketkeeper who’s well past it (Brad Haddin) and two mediocre spinners (Nathan Lyon and Xavier Doherty).

Don’t forget three out of form batsmen (Phil Hughes, Ed Cowan and David Warner) to go with Michael Clarke and two pacemen (Mitchell Starc and Peter Siddle).

Would this team put any fear into India?

With two Ashes series just around the corner, the Aussies have become the laughing stock of international cricket. The Poms are licking their lips!

It is time for a personnel change in Australian cricket and it must happen soon!

We need to see some heads roll and it has to start at the top with the selectors: John Inverarity is just as bad as Andrew Hilditch, if not worse. We need people with good cricketing brains to be selecting the team.

My suggestion would be someone like Steve Waugh to be chairman of selectors.

The coach Mickey Arthur was great for South Africa but maybe his way of coaching is just not right for Australia.

My choice for coach would be current Queensland coach Darren Lehmann, who has had great success since he started coaching. ‘Boof’, your time has come!

Michael Clarke is a good captain, no matter what people say about him, however he should not be a selector because in the past he has given his NSW mates Hughes and Smith selection over others (Usman Khawaja anybody?!)

For the Test squad that goes to the Ashes, quite a few changes will be made.

Out goes Shane Watson, Hughes, Cowan, Lyon, Doherty, Maxwell, Smith, Haddin and Matt Wade. Here is my first XI for first Test against England:

1. Warner, 2. Shaun Marsh, 3. Khawaja, 4. Clarke (c), 5. George Bailey, 6. Tim Paine (wk), 7. Mitch Marsh, 8. Starc, 9. James Pattinson, 10. Ashton Agar, 11. Jackson Bird.

Other touring members: Adam Voges, Chris Hartley, Steve O’Keefe, Ryan Harris, Henriques, Callum Ferguson and Nathan Coulter-Nile

What do other Roarers think? Any other ideas about how to save Australian cricket and possibly recapture the urn?

You really are clutching at straws by looking at one innings of a test match. What happened on the second innings? You chose not to comment on that. England have been known to start slowly on tours but unlike Australia we always come back stronger. I guarantee England will still win this series. Do you know what happened the last time Australia played the Kiwis? Let me remind you. They played in Australia and it was 1-1. How embarrassing is it losing a home test to New Zealand! When New Zealand come to England they won't win a test and won't even come close. Check the link below. Australia couldn't even chase down a target of 241! http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-new-zealand-2011/engine/match/518948.html

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/current/match/569243.html look at that i would say being bowled out by the kiwis on a pitch as flat as your bowling attack. Very poor cricket by England I must admit australia isn't at its best. But England is not much better.

Well another defeat for the Aussies. Lol. That's 3-0 down to India. Your top batsman over both innings combined was Starc! One word describes the Australian team, Shambles.

'If it wasn't for rain we would have lost to 'NZ' lol. You have no idea what you are talking about. Just accept this is the worst Aussie side for a long long time and a Aussie side that hasn't got a hope of winning a single test match in England. You are losers.

if it wast for rain you guys would have got beaten by new zealand. Also if it wasnt for rain in the first and an injury to pattinson in the second we would have beaten sa. Just to remind you you also lost to sa.

You really are thick mate. West Indies? The West Indies haven't been a force in cricket for over 15 years. Getting wickets against the West Indies means nothing. You also mention Starc being 'unplayable' how many test matches has he played? Seven! Let him play a few more before you compare him with the likes of Anderson. Oh by the way those wickets he took against SA? If I'm not mistaken SA beat you guys. But that's no surprise as losing is now a habit for Australia.

even agianst south africa in perth(the best batting line up in the world) he destroyed them picking up amla and kallis (two of the best batsman in the world) in one over. I would call that impressive swing bowling.

if you would notice that the pace attack now is completely different from the one that played in the last ashes series(except siddle), and if you watched the latest odi series against the west indies, when the ball is swing mitchell starc is unplayable. Bad news for the english is it swings in england a lot.

Ha ha. That's funny. I take it you are joking. None of those 'pace' bowlers you listed would get into the English team. James Anderson is regarded as one of the best quick bowlers in the world and has been for some time. Only Steyn and Morkel are probably better than them. England's bowling attack was brilliant in India but I wouldn't say the same about Australia. How did the Aussie attack do against England in the last Ashes tour? Not very well. Whereas England's pace attack was superb. Rankings and averages don't always tell the real story. You just need to watch test cricket and have good knowledge to realise that England's attack is miles better than the Aussies.

Could not agree more - your selection is very close to mine - but not sure if MC is the right person to captain he is a wuz. Look at WA since DH Arther left they have won nearly all games. Could be in the Grand Final - will know tomorrow. Let US select the oz test side through pop vote - WE would get it right. had enough not going to watch test cricket game till this S is sorted. We want the BEST 11 not Invers 11. Cant wait for the shield final. At least they are playing their best 11 not this SH. "S" "S".

oliver you make good points on marsh, but really our whole pase line of about 6 guys would walk in to the english team no competition you just have to look at the stats. james anderson avg 30 stuart broad avg 32 steven finn avg 29 nothing impressive there aussies james pattinson avg 22 peter siddle avg 29 ryan harris 23 ben hilfenhaus avg 28 and jackson bird avg test 16 fc 19 so i would say all of thes 5 bowlers would stroll quite comfortably in to the english team.

Ignore the bit where I said ' I would play him at three' I meant five. The site wouldn't let me edit.

Whatever team Australia play against England will lose. They have not got a hope in hell of regaining the ashes. This is the worst squad the Aussies have had in my lifetime and if it the weather doesn't play a part (which it probably will) England will win 5-0. Australia haven't got a chance of winning a test. England's team is better on all fronts. On current form the only Australian player that would get in the England team would be Clarke. No one else comes close. One thing I agree with the writer is that Shaun Marsh has to be given a run in the test team. I personally would play him at three as you cannot have Warner and Marsh opening. You need a steady batsman there. I would play him after Clarke at five with U.K at three.

Allocating blame appears to be the favourite past time of critics. Let's not forget that individual responsibility is the purvey of the representative competing. Coaches and Managers don't compete on the field. The really good ones will even admit that they can't motivate competitors once the action starts, Once they cross the line the competitors are responsible for their decision making and performance. To be selected, with a few notable exceptions, they must have demonstrated an appropriate level of competence and commitment. They are entitled to a few chances to confirm their eligibility to compete at the highest level. Should they fail to stake their claim we should never forget that they did climb the mountain and achieve what many of us can only dream about. They should be applauded for their dedication and will to achieve. It's too easy to be an armchair critic (just take a look through this site for example) and fling the brown stuff on those that fail to triumph. Most of us have no idea of the sacrifices these competitors in all representative sports make to carry our hopes and our dreams.

reckon Mitch Marsh brings more to the team than Hughes but yes with Swann out Hughes won't have to face to much of it in England however will have to face the Jimmy Anderson Swing (anyone remember caught guptill bowled Martin)

i like your team. only thing i would change would be mitch marsh out paine to 7 batting moves down to make room for hughes at 2. he is a terrible player of spin but with no swann he will not play much of it in england. Also i think some should tell warner to pick a bowler and go at him, to try to take him out of the series. as happened to mitch johnson last time round.

I think we just have to accept that we won't win the Border Gavaskar with the team we have got so we.have to look forward to the Ashes and not make the same mistake there
