Randwick Guineas preview

By Cameron Rose / Expert

On Monday, Justin Cinque made the case that this season’s batch of three-year-olds was the best in decades.

Tomorrow, we’re seeing another group one on offer for this prestigious crop with the Royal Randwick Guineas, albeit taking place at Warwick Farm.

While I agree with Justin that we appear to be seeing three-year-olds of a higher than usual quality, I’m very much in the camp that our weight-for-age ranks, especially at anything over a sprinting trip, are extremely thin.

The older horses got soundly whipped by a minimum of four lengths in the Australian Cup, and the best credentialed WFA horse among them, Glass Harmonium was beaten by five.

Now, the Mike Moroney-trained galloper has his share of talent, and is a bulldog in the straight when he’s been rated well, but I’d imagine a horse like Grand Armee or Desert War would beat him by ten lengths!

The greatest example of the lack of depth in our WFA ranks is Rekindled Interest.

This is a horse that almost started favourite in a Cox Plate, and continues to be rated in the markets most of the time he turns out.

He’s run some handy races in his career, but can you imagine him starting at anything under $31 if he was competing a decade ago?

Manighar certainly created headlines this time last year, taking out the Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes and BMW. But does anyone really think he would be competitive against the likes of Sunline, Northerly, Lohnro and Makybe Diva?

Connections of Shogun Lodge and Defier must look at the current fields with dismay. How many group one races would each have won in the current day?

So, getting back to the present, are there any potential superstars running around in the Randwick Guineas?

Rebel Dane, It’s a Dundeel and Proisir seem the likely candidates for such a status and are rightfully the first three in betting for tomorrow’s race.

The markets have not much between Rebel Dane and Proisir, but for mine the former should be clearly on top.

His turn of foot is superior to any other horse in the race, and he looks like he’ll relish the mile, which he’s stepping up to for the first time. I fancy that it may become his pet distance.

There looks to be a solid tempo on my speed map, and Jason Collett on Rebel Dane will have the pick of where he wants to sit from barrier one. Unless, Proisir blows them away from up front or goes out hard to get them off the bit, I can’t see him being beaten.

Proisir was disappointing first up for mine, and I wonder if the Gai Waterhouse colt is already at a mini-crossroads. It’s been six months since his last win, which was the breathtaking Spring Stakes at Newcastle, and I’m not sure what the right race for him will be.

We saw that It’s a Dundeel had him covered over 2000m in the Spring Champion, and if I fancy Rebel Dane has him covered at 1600m here, it’s right to ask where his next win will come from. And that’s without taking into account a couple of handy potential competitors in Pierro and All Too Hard!

It’s a Dundeel had the perfect return in the Hobartville, making good ground late to suggest that he’s on target for his future goals. I’ve got some time for this horse, he’s got the touch of class we’re always looking for, so we can watch for him to be strong again late.

I’m not sure there’s much between Tougher Than Ever and Sacred Falls, and fancy they’ll both fall a bit short at the highest level here, while we’ll get to see how the Melbourne three-year-old’s form ties in with the performance of Australian Guineas winner Ferlax.

I’ve seen plenty of Snowden horses perform well in the Spring but then not come up for an Autumn campaign, so the jury is still well and truly out on Tatra, Proverb and Solemn, especially after they all ran into a heavy track first up.

Selections: 1. Rebel Dane; 2. It’s a Dundeel; 3. Proisir; 4. Ashokan

I'll have to start including "Rose's Roughie" again as the carnival heats up, didn't do too bad last Spring! If I had to pick one out today, I'll go with the two year old race down in Bendigo, Churchill Dancer. Currently $26 with Sportsbet, he made his debut in a pretty strong race. The four that finished ahead of him have all either won or run placings at black type level since then. Churchill Dance has since been gelded and has the blinkers applied for the first time, a trick that David Hayes has often used in a target race for his juveniles. Should get a charmed run from barrier three, and give us a fantastic sight at the price.

It's A Dundeel will be ridden closer with the blinkers on. I think, if he doesn't win today, he'll just win the Rosehill Guineas!

I thought Proverb was outstanding first up and is another one to watch from a Derby prospective today.

If the race was actually at Randwick I'd be all over It's a Dundeel. Since it's at the goat track, the two favourites will fight it out.

I think Justin and Will make some reasonable points about It's a Dundeel, I'm not sure we can write him off yet over a Derby trip. He'll obviously be more seasoned this time around as well. His first-up run suggests his on target.

Some very good points Justin, but I'll contend that while Rebel Dane had fitness on his side at Rosehill, he still has one more run than them now. I can't wait to see Proisir burst clear and Rebel Dane (try to) reel him in!

Tomorrow, Rebel Dane, next start It's a Dundeel. Poor Glass Harmonion, a ferrari would have struggled to go faster than he did for the first 1000m last week. Those of us who backed Defier in the Toorak when Larry Cassidy didn't get him out till 100m past the post are still having sleepless nights.

I thought Dundeel ran on well in the Derby. He was no chance of winning though - parked out the back off a muddling speed. Such a pity.

I am going to be watching Solemn closely in the Guineas tomorrow. He's being set for the Derby, and I think he will be a big chance in that race.

Agree with your first par bondy - Proisir has had excuses. But dont write off It's A Dundeel for the Derby. I think he had come to the end of his tether by Derby Day last spring. He's bred to stay and he'll be fourth up - and not overcooked - come Australian Derby Day on April 13.

I think when dundeal beat proisir over 10 he prosir went to hard, and priosir returned on soft ground where theres no solid form for him on wet tracks. Another thing I think dundeal wont win a derby he wont get the trip he was beaten 5 lengths in vrc derby at evens.

You make a great point about the lack of depth in our WFA horses. I've thought the same thing over the last 12 months and it is good to see it getting some coverage. I really like It's a Dundeel; this race is set up for him to storm them at the post.

Nice preview Cameron! I'm going to put my hand up and say that while I agree this is a race of three winning chances, I actually think it's Proisir who'll be getting the chocolates here. I think perhaps the most important consideration for tomorrow's race will be the track condition. In the Hobartville - which the key chances come through - it was heavy but tomorrow it will be firm. We've had no rain in Sydney for the second week in a row. I think Proisir is going to appreciate that firm footing - he couldn't use his customary dash on the slop first-up. I think we're going to see him control the race from near the speed and sprint well tomorrow. This is a horse will a wicked turn of foot when right. My only bone to pick with Rebel Dane is that he may've been flattered at Rosehill. He had fitness on all his rivals and he clearly got through the ground. Those same advantages are taken away from him tomorrow. I think It's A Dundeel will be sharpened by the application of blinkers but Warwick Farm doesn't appear his track. And we haven't seen him ridden any closer than near last so that makes his task near impossible. Should be a cracking race!
