McKenzie must stay in Australia

By Simon_Sez / Roar Guru

Ewen McKenzie has shown his hand: he wants to be a coach of an international team and no longer the coach of the Queensland Reds.

What a shame for the Queensland, as they were a shambles before he turned up as coach.

If McKenzie does leave it will hurt Queensland rugby and Australian rugby.

The strength of Australian rugby is based on the quality of coaches supervising the Australian Super Rugby sides.

It is only when Australia has the strongest SR conference, stronger than New Zealand or South Africa, will it have a chance of dominating the southern hemisphere Rugby Championship.

If Ewen McKenzie has his eye on being the next Wallaby coach he should be told categorically by the ARU that there is no job vacancy until Robbie Deans, the most successful Super rugby coach ever, wants to leave or some other event which causes a vacancy.

McKenzie should be encouraged to stay where he is for the sake of Australian rugby and the valuable contribution he has to make towards its success.

Australian needs more quality coaches like Ewen McKenzie, not less and he must stay at all costs.

Perhaps the ARU could offer master coaches like Mackenzie a top up cash bonus as a demonstration of their appreciation of his value.

Top up fees are offered to Super Rugby players who play for the Wallabies, why shouldn’t a valuable coach like Mackenzie get a top up fee, he is probably worth about seven individual players with his contribution.

The same situation can be applied for all of the Australian SR coaches, the master coaches are undervalued.

Well coached teams who play well fill up football stadiums, encourage sponsors to put money into the game, make the game more popular and last but not least, they bring on the talent; for example, the Brumbies under Jake White, a rabble of nobodies one year ago, now they are a team of future Wallabies.

Australia needs master coaches like Ewen McKenzie or Jake White and a system for creating more master coaches for all levels of rugby from schools to the Wallabies.

If the ARU mismanage the Ewen McKenzie situation then there should be an assessment as to who should be replaced by a fitter smarter more accurate candidate, like any other team.

Good for you Sprigs. Let me start by saying you shouldn't have Robbie Deans. He is useless, can't talk, can't coach, can't motivate... he's just not Aussie. Look he has left out all of my favourite players and while some of them were injured, he should have picked them before that. He clearly has no strategy and the only thing he tells the guys is play what is in front of you. He also hasn't improved their basic skills and he's playing them out of position. How ridiculous is that. And finally Quade Cooper has also said he is crap and look how well he is doing. His team mates wanted to agree with him but were all too frightened to say so. They just bagged poor Quade when he was only thinking about his team mates and better facilities. I don't know who we should get. But the way to do it is someone high profile. Put out some media hype before hand and then it looks like magic when you sign him up. Say it's such a shambles it's going to take years to fix up... offload some key players so you give the new guy something to blame. I reckon by the time fans realise there's no magic spray... well you'll have a pocket full of dough and who really cares. In the meantime McKenzie who had a couple of good years, a decline then some bad years has moved to QLD to see if it's repeatable... looks like it might be. Let's give him a tilt at the Wallaby jersey. At least we have one of our own taking the ship down. And anyone is better Dingo. In seriousness the name Dingo is somewhat offensive and the way it is spat out by several here as pointed out in a couple of well constructed comments by HT is a blight on Australian rugby fans. It also appears as insinuated by your comment that fans have a deep knowledge of what it takes to coach, what the coach spends their time doing and how the players and coach work as a unit. They also know just how good Ewen or Jake will be. I thank god I didn't grow up playing rugby here in this private school opinionated environment. I thank god I had good coaches and played with and against quality opposition. Because if I hadn't maybe I would have just had weak unsubstantiated opinions to espouse here. For the record, my chill pill this week has been Biltong and High Tackle. Thanks guys you both help me retain the faith. Sorry BT for the comments about props and there pudgy hands. But you know when doing endless drills of short passing and snapping the ball into the props guts... the reason we do that is because props instinctively know where there guts is. I made the mistake of bouncing a ball off a props head once (he was irritating me.. Long story). I didn't think he would notice; bit like bouncing it on the ground. But he started shuffling towards me with a glazed look in his eye. He would have made it to me in about half an hour, but in the meantime I got pinged and sent to the sin bin.

Good, then we can give him the Hurricanes or the Highlanders to work with. And see if he is as good a coach as some NH pundits say he is.

It is probably part of the reason that he's going to coach elsewhere before making a tilt at the Wallabies. At the moment the blue blazer brigade at St Leonards see him as a Queenslander which is scary and cannot be allowed.

Well it didnt stop them appointing 3 QLD assistant coaches, now did it? QLDers have a strange perception of being hard done by. The most Wallabies in 2012 came from the Reds, the 3 assistant coaches were from QLD, the 4 players that captained Aust were all from QLD (Genia and Pocock were QLD products) and all the QLDers get all sooky as if the Tahs and NSW are unfairly advantaged. You guys need to see yourselves from an outsiders perspective. You complain after QLD is CLEARLY not descriminated against in the slightest and has by FAR the most influence over the Wallabies at the present time. Boo hoo.

Yeah I thought that was quite a strange comment. Aust does extremely well for the amount of players they have at Super standard and have overachieved quite often. They used to dominate NZ at times without a national comp. Australia will prolly take a game off NZ this year if they can keep their best on the park but it will be the result of a virus, the comp being too close to a WC, food poisoning or becuz of the ref.

Wii has to be a kiwi. How I know this? Excuses for losing. NZ put a full strength side against Aust and lost. Aust went to SA and won in SA against a full strength SA side. Now you can say that maybe if NZ put a full strength side together for SA in SA them maybe they would have won but then YOU would be drawing a long bow. Aust has done extremely well against SA during Deans stint and its not becuz SA are bad becuz NZ has not done as well against them. Speaking of long bows, long bows are used by people against Deans when putting him down 99% of the time. Quite frankly, from the most hardcore haters to the "slight blamers", people just make stuff up, blame him for things thay clearly are not his fault and twist any little thing in order for it to be a mark against him. I think its pathetic and its sad that people can be OK with being that way. The truth is that Deans has made a few mistakes imo but nothing major. His use of the bench in years past has left me scratching my head and some of his selections have left me puzzled. However when I hear all this talk of Deans being conservative since the start of the WC and all the pure nonsense that gets thrown around I just have to say something. Although I will say this, I can fully see NZ fans becoming like Ausie fans and expecting to be great all the time and when things dont reach those unreasonable standards, I can see them looking for people to blame like a lot of Australians are now. Reason has long gone and emotion is left steering the ship for many on here. Aust were arguably the team of the 90s and in the last 12 years they have been relegated all the way down to 3rd. Surely that must mean Deans is a useless coach and the Wallabies are not up to it? Or maybe its reality biting.

I've been following Roar for a while now and noting all your comments. I have my application in at the Reds to be Director of Coaching next year and if successful in getting the position I reckon that, based on accumulated Roar wisdom, we will win the championship in 2014.

claiming the Tri-Nations 2011 winas anything significant is drawing a long bow when you take a step back and look at how it was approached by all three countries. Certain countries did not field full strength teams on their away legs as they had the World Cup in mind. Dress it up as much as you like but there should not have been a Tri Nations played so close to a WC. I would go onto say what good did it do for Australia really lets be honest this thread was still fill of vitriol from disgruntled Wallabies fans the euphoria was short lived indeed.

Declan Kidney's contract only runs until Ireland's summer tour to America, which takes place in June. There is nobody on the island who thinks he is going to be offered an extension and many think he may be "encouraged" to step down before that tour. Whether we want somebody who looks like Benny Hill's sterner brother is another thing. :) (Or maybe the picture above is not a true likeness) Smart money would be on Joe Schmidt who has done a good job at Leinster. Although whether Ireland's richest province would be too pleased by that is another question. Possible Irish coaches might also include Michael Bradley, who has had an up and down time at Edinburgh; Eric Elwood, who has done a good job with extremely meagre resources at Connacht, although he is stepping down at the end of this season claiming he needs a rest from it all, and Conor O'Shea who has done a great job at Harlequins, although he is not strictly speaking the coach, instead having the title Director of Rugby with Tony Diprose having the role of First Team coach. Either way, there will be some plum assignments going abegging in the Northern Hemisphere this year. In exchange, we could always give you Eddie O'Sullivan :)

My view is that everyone in top circles knows Deans is finished after the Lions tour ....or he should be. Taking Deans into 2014 is a disaster because its agreed by all the Wallaby game plan needs rethinking.

I think this is reaction to Jake White saying he wants the job. Basically McKenzie has offered the ARU an ultimatum, hire him for the job or lose him overseas.

Your right the past has shown if Aus can put 22 really good players together depth is not that much of a concern. Maybe people didn't get injured as much back then.

Maybe a White / McKenzie combo at the Wallabies similar to the Reds setup.
