Premature Picks: NSW Blues 2013

By Daniel Szabo / Roar Guru

As a mad rugby league fan and passionate New South Welshman, there’s nothing I enjoy more than debating and discussing the make up of the NSW Blues side – even if kick-off is 12 weeks away!

In fact, given the sorry state of affairs south of the Tweed with regards to Origin success in the past seven years, and the fact that the great Laurie Daley is taking up the reigns for the first time, I’m surprised this debate hasn’t already started.

At this stage, this is the team I would pick, although there are quite a few players who I’ve only penciled in.

1. Brett Stewart – the Wizard of Fortress Brookvale, Snake has a great strike rate with five tries from eight Origin appearances. I expect he will want to add to those this year.

2. Jarryd Hayne – he probably is a certainty, but you never do know with Hayne. If he has a form slump and both Brett Morris and Uate are in form, Hayne may miss out. I would expect to see him there though.

3. Josh Morris – he has speed to burn and will be a handful in defence for Queensland. No one has done a better job in Origin marking Greg Inglis.

4. Michael Jennings – probably will be there due to lack of a better option (feel free to volunteer your services with some good form, Chris Lawrence). Whether he’s in form at club level or not generally doesn’t matter as he always brings his a-game for Origin.

5. Brett Morris – if he makes the cut ahead of Uate, it will most likely be because of incumbency and his combination with brother Josh. Brett will not be leading the try scoring this year because he plays in a team with halves who do not know how to set up tries.

That is not Brett’s fault. We all know he can score tries.

Good kick return metres and very few stupid mistakes (like the one he made in the play the ball against Melbourne) should see him make the NSW side. With that said, if he has a bad Origin one expect Uate to take his place.

6. Todd Carney – didn’t have a great debut Origin Series, but he was solid, and probably did enough to keep his place in the team for game one (he also needs to keep up his club form). But with Josh Reynolds in form, the pressure is now on Carney to perform or else he’ll be gone for game two

7. Kurt Gidley – I change my mind between him and Reynolds daily. I think Reynolds is a better option than Gidley, but knowing Laurie Daley, Kurt Gidley will be in the side somewhere, and for the purposes of team balance, it’s better he take up the halfback spot than a bench spot.

At halfback Gidley can interchange with Farah at dummy half throughout the game (Farah likes getting into first receiver for the Tigers). Gidley also adds lots of experience, and is a dangerous dummy half runner.

8. James Tamou – debate about his eligibility is over. He is a Blue, whether Queensland like it or not, and he’ll be there for sure for game one .

9. Robbie Farah – Mr “Never Again for Origin” turned Mr “Blues Hooker by Default” turned Mr “64 Tackles” has been through one hell of a ride to get to this point. He is now undoubtedly, second only to Cameron Smith (something I’m sure he’d love to change).

10. Tim Grant – proved he belongs in Origin when he smashed Petero at the start of game two and followed it up with a solid showing in Game three. He will partner Tamou in the front-row.

11. Greg Bird – Mr “Made for Origin” and Gallen’s partner in crime (on the field), Birdy may now ply his trade on the Gold Coast, but he still hates Queenslanders just as much as ever.

12. Luke Lewis – consistently one of the Blues’ best over the years. He will be in the 17 for sure.

13. Paul Gallen – for as long as Ricky Stuart thinks Ashley Klein is a “f-cking cheat,” the Blues’ inspirational captain and leader will be there come July 17 (unless some police phone taps magically surface between now and then).

14. Anthony Watmough – plays with such energy, it’s almost frightening. Like Lewis, he’s been one of the Blues’ best for years. Will not be around forever, and deserves a series win before he retires.

15. Trent Merrin – has been the Dragons’ best by a mile. Great at promoting the second phase. He will be dangerous off the bench.

16. Aaron Woods – has been an Origin bolter for almost a year now. Good club form and a solid outing for City should see him get a place on the bench.

17. Tariq Sims – this hinges on him finding form after consecutive leg breaks. At his best he could have a devastating impact off the bench. At his injury-prone worst he could be a liability to the team.

Let’s hope for his sake (and NSW’s sake) that he can pick up where he left off before he got injured.

So there you have it Roarers, the NSW team for Origin one 2013, 12 weeks out from kick-off.

Who knows if the actual team will look anything like the one above come game time?

Might have to wait until the ASADA investigation before naming both teams. The Blues have to develop their young players again this year and turn them into a champion side. Something Bellemy was unable to do this in the 3 years he was in charge but recent indication show there been considerable narrowing of gap between the Maroons & Blues. The kryptonite for the Blues their halves which the opposite for Qld! Until they manufacture 2 decent halves, Qld will make it 10 in a row!

Doesnt matter. NSW still need a couple more rule changes and to make QLD play all the games in Sydney before they come close. I would be more worried about how many NSW rep players may have a few problems with some current investigations going on.

What about the halves, 6/7 for Blues. I beleive the young Reynolds from Bulldogs and Rabbitos can very competitive. Try them out this year and see. They could cement the new 6/7 combination for the next 5-6 years. Also Aaron Woods is my first pick for a prop.

Much of his problems has been with the combination of the halves not firing as it should. If he can get his confidence then he will be the man for the job. He does not have much time left to prove it though.

The Jamie Soward of 2009, 2010 and the first half of 2011 is the best man for the NSW five eighth job. Unfortunately, he hasn't been seen since Origin 3 2011. I'm not prepared to take a punt on a guy who's best efforts have not been seen for over 18 months.

This is the very reason why we have not been wininig. We keep bringing in rookies and burn them out before they had a chance to blossom. You must have years of experience to play SOO. Sure there is the odd occasion where a rookie can make it but it is an exception. We need to keep the experience players and let the youth fight for the position. This is why people are saying Kurt Giddley in the 1/2 back position if he goes well at Newcastle as he has a ton of experience in SOO. Depending how Jamie Soward goes he should be the 5/8th as his kicking game is vital in SOO.

In my opinion, for Pearce to retain his spot he would have to be the form halfback in the NRL over the next 12 weeks. Leading the try-assists, leading the Dally M, Roosters top of the table, and he'd need to have an absolute blinder in City v Country (assuming he even gets picked for that). And even then I don't know if he deserves another chance. In every game he's played we've either lost because of him or won in spite of him.

I don't know if you can give the selectors credit for realising that. They were basically forced to pick Farah by default in Game 1 because Buderus was injured and Ennis was playing injured which was badly affecting his game.

The fact that we came so close last year with an inferior halves pairing says to me that the rest of the team is more than easily good enough. Look at the Kangaroos team that faced NZ at the end of last year. Take out the spine positions and the Blues outnumber the Maroons 8-5 (and I thought Darius Boyd was extremely lucky to get a start on the wing ahead of Uate). You do the maths. The Blues have a better team across the park, but the Blues' spine is second rate and unfortunately, that's where games are won and lost.

I didn't say I thought Gidley would be halfback, I think he'll be on the bench. What I'm saying is, that if Daley insists on picking Gidley then play him at halfback so that he's not taking up a bench spot that should be occupied by an impact forward. Playing Gidley as a reserve dummy half is useless - Farah can and should play the whole game. "is this the team you think SHOULD be there or the team you think WILL be there because, at halfback at least, it seems like neither" This seems like neither because it is neither. I don't really have a solid opinion on who should play halfback, and to be honest, I don't really mind as long as it's not Pearce. If the team was selected tomorrow I would pick Gidley over Reynolds because at this stage, I'm not convinced Reynolds is ready for Origin (although that may change after 12 more rounds and City vs Country). You can blood a young halfback in first grade a bit before he's ready because there are 26 rounds. If he's not up to it and puts in a bad performance he'll have plenty of chances to bounce back. Origin is a different beast. You don't get second chances, and one bad Origin performance can make or break an Origin career (Mullen, Campese etc). Gidley on the other hand, is a proven performer at Origin level (after a shaky start to his Origin career) and he is one of NSW's most experienced players. Whether he'd excel as an Origin halfback is debatable, but I have no doubt he'd handle the task because he is an Origin player.

I think NSW would be better off picking a team of players aged 23 and under. And give them some experience. Any team named by NSW is pretty much no chance of winning whilst QLD have Inglis, Slater, Barba, Cronk, Thurston, Smith, Hodges, Myles etc etc etc. This way of thinking would see a NSW team in 5-6 yrs time wih plenty of experience and able to take advantage of when the time comes when all those above named "once in a generation players" retire. Better to plan to win a series in the next 5 years than to continue to fail for the next 20.

Daley has already stated that Mitchell Pearce will be the 1/2 which I find amazing to say that so early in the season. Unless that has been wrongly reported? The pack chosen is pretty spot on but the 1/2 and 5/8 combination is a concern if once again we have to put up with Pearce after so many attempts at failing.

superstar superhuman, you've still got me a bit baffled by the idea that you chose Gidley at half because you think that's what Daley will do, when Daley has come out and said that he's picking Mitchell Pearce at halfback. I guess I'm saying, is this the team you think SHOULD be there or the team you think WILL be there because, at halfback at least, it seems like neither :-)

Its a fair point but, i think with the 2 reynolds in the halves NSW can get the job done.

The one thing that gives me hope is that the selectors finally took their heads out of the Murdoch papers, watched some footy, and realised that Robbie Farah is better than Mick Ennis by the length of Suncorp Stadium. Can't help but feel that the Blues would have won a series by now if it hadn't taken them so long.

I was going to say almost exactly the same thing! No matter how you shuffle the combinations, they're still not good enough. The rest of the team is easily good enough. Bit depressing really.

Didn't his decision have something to do with how the representative process dealt with him when he came back Europe? I remember him being rushed straight into the Australian team and shortly after he vowed to never be a representative again. My memory is fuzzy though... I would love to know the full story also.

I must admit, I am a little this year - 2 home games to the blues, yet again, does lean in your favour.
