This is the worst Australian team since 1877

By Beardan / Roar Guru

Australia’s embarrassing and disgraceful tour of India ended with another hiding in the fourth Test. Coming home to Australia will be Australia’s worst ever team since 1877.

These are the facts about this team. It’s the worst Australian touring team in over 40 years – since Bill Lawry’s side got hammered 4-0 in South Africa.

It’s the worst Australian team since Charles Bannerman opened the batting for Australia about 140 years ago and Shane Watson eclipses Kim Hughes as Australia’s worst ever captain.

On this poor excuse for a captain. Promoting Maxwell to opener in the second innings, after he had failed in his three previous innings’ as a Test batsman, screamed of amateur hour. It looked no different to park cricket, when you run out of ideas so you just give someone a go and hope for the best.

All of the planning and professionalism that comes with sport these days has amounted to moving a bloke who has shown nothing as a Test batsman to opener to take on India on a tough wicket.

Is that the best Mickey Arthur and Shane Watson could come up with? What a disgrace.

There has been too much talk and focus on the Ashes during this tour. The time to worry about the Ashes is still a month away.

The lessons from this disgraceful tour need to be learnt first.

What you're forgetting is that in 1985-87 Australia were stripped bare because of the rebel tour ban. At least there was an excuse for having a weakened team. Since there is no rebel ban now, there is no excuse for this threadbare poor excuse for an Australian team.

dunno bout that. but one thing is sure, they are the worst pitches ever served up since 1877. where the ball explodes off the pitch like a grenade. funny thing, india could well be a true force in cricket for decades if they could only develope some real good fast bowlers and suitable decks to bowl on. poor old ishant, must have an average of 48? ...whatever.

yeah McKenzie was great bowler prior to that, but one reason they failed so miserably in SA was that he picked up a bug or something i suspect in India and was the never the same bowler again -- as a result the team had no attack in SA -- Hawke was only really a medium paced trundler good but not great and near the end of his career, alan connelly had been good in england but after that petered out -- gleeson who was a good bowler bowled a fearsome amount of overs and the other seamer was lawry mayne a west oz journeyman. It was also mallet's first tour and he got thumped. The following season against england, froggy thompson opened the bowling in four tests for literally one wicket and in the last test chappell was made captain and Lilllie and tony dell a big very promising Qld left hander opened the bowling. Dell immediately retired don't know why but he was mighty handy -- that team wasn't bad at all. it was more to do with circumstances than anything else that they lost so heavily in south africa and the following season against the poms they were undone by snow and boycott really two of the best players poms ever produced, plus they simply couldn't bowl the poms out.. Absolutely much better than this team. I've also been saying for a while here that in the 80's there were a lot of players didn't kick on and when the aussies came back under Border round 1988 they weren't there -- talking Yallop, Phillips, wood, cozier, ritchie, hilditch, darling, dyson a whole raft of 'em -- don't know what it was but they were certainly a lost generation of aussie batsmen. One reason i think was the chopping and changing the conflicting state loyalties etc etc all reminiscent of now.

I don't think Watson should be in the team at all, his batting is not good enough and he has had enough chances to improve it. If he bowls, he breaks down. He should not have played most of his tests, it was only the selectors mania for having an allrounder that led to his inclusion. But if asked, do you expect him to say no? Blame the selectors. His performance in this test and others was no better or worse than the rest of the team, witH some few exceptions. His captaincy, due to the overall shiteness of the team was never tested and probably made no difference, though they did seem a little more aggressive. Your little rant just verged a bit too much towards personal vindictive without adding anything that hasn't been already said in my personal opinion. Sorry about that.

The worst bit of the 1877 team is that none of them are around now to walk into this crap team. -Beardan

Which part of the 3 days did you like about Watsons captaincy? Which innings was your favourite of his, the one where he made 17 or the one where he made 5? -Beardan

No India isnt the greatest in the history of Indian cricket, which makes it even worse to be hammered 4-0 to a good but a far way from great team.

In another words Robert, you agreed with most of it as they were two of my main points. Of course the most important test is the next one you play, there was far too much talk about the Ashes during this tour, which was poor to say the least. -Beardan

I have to login under my son, Jaiden Bettiol, as the Roar banned me from comments for having a little dig at Kate Lundy 2 months ago. Yes it means worst Australian cricket team since test cricket started.

Gidday bayman, I have actually said the same thing before - if the Aussies had gone straight to SA without a detour to india, it probably would still have been 4-0. But most of the tests might have been closer. Instead of losses by 170 runs, an innings, 307 runs & 323 runs, it might instead have been losses by 70 runs, an innings, 100 runs & 150 runs! A margin call, I know.....

If memory serves me, that 4-0 South African hiding in 1969/70 followed beating India in India on the first leg of the tour. Perhaps it might not have been 4-0 if we had not been forced to play a series on India's dust bowls immediately before confronting South Africa on seamer friendly decks. Of course, South Africa did have Proctor, Richards, Barlow, Bacher, Irvine, Lance, Lindsay and the Pollock brothers - so they may have won 4-0 anyway.

How did this get published? It's just a slightly wordy way of saying "I hate Watto".

Exactly the 84/5 sides were made to look worse than what they were , playing such good opposition. Love Dirk Wellham lol and Greg Ritchie and Murray Bennet lol they rock.

The 1984 and 84/85 sides had to contend with the West Indies too. Forgot about Redpath from the the 1970s outfit. A sublime player with brilliant sideburns.
