WIZ: League's brain-dead ploys are stifling the attack

By Gary Freeman / Expert

I have a few bones to pick with our NRL coaches and administrators and there can be no better place to air my grievances than right here on The Roar.

There are a number of things in today’s game that drive the Wiz crazy and I’d love to know if you share the same opinion.

Firstly, what the heck is going on when attacking teams get awarded a penalty a metre or so out from the opponent’s goal-line?

The captain instructs the kicker to kick backwards over the sideline, presumably to give the team some extra room to attack and perhaps curb traces of white line fever.

The rule does state that you can walk as far back as possible to take the tap as long as you stay on the line where the penalty was given.

And the benefit is the defending team cannot move off the goal-line. You can go back to your own goal-line if you want – they can’t move.

OK, I understand the theory, but what do we see week-in, week-out? The attacking team takes the tap and the ball carrier gets tackled on the exact spot where the penalty was given!

That’s a ridiculous waste of a tackle and obviously reduces the chances of scoring a four pointer.

Here’s number two – I cannot handle players tactically kicking over the fullback’s head to make the ball run dead.

This ploy is meant to reduce the effectiveness of the Billy Slater, Brett Stewart and Greg Inglis-types, who can be lethal with the ball in hand and room to move.

It’s a brain-dead part of the modern game. Surely coaches can come up with better last tackle options, knowing the collective skills of their kickers and chasers.

What is wrong with an old-fashioned cross kick for an eager winger with the defence back-tracking?

I hate seeing the ball kicked dead and want to throw something at the telly whenever this annoying practice raises its ugly head.

The way to stop it would be to give the defending team a 30 metre restart instead of the current 20. Use your heads rule-makers! This is not a major change but I feel it would prevent a lot of predictability and boredom from so-called ‘attacking’ teams.

My third bone to pick concerns the interchange rule. There are way too many interchanges being made and I’d like to see the number of interchanges limited to six.

We don’t want a game of touch football. The fans love seeing the big guys tough it out and not being rested at the drop of a hat.

The doctors say the game needs the current number of interchanges for player safety reasons.

What a load of crap. Can someone tell me about the ‘safety’ of the players who are constantly left out there in the heat of battle?

I’m talking about the halfbacks, five-eighths and fullbacks. These guys do a hell of a lot of running and tackling throughout the 80 minutes. No break for these tough guys. It’s nonsense.

OK, time for the Wiz to calm down a little and mention tonight’s Roosters-Bulldogs biggie.

I am counting down the minutes to kick-off and it’s going to be fascinating watching Sonny Bill Williams line-up against his former club.

He has been an exceptional signing for the Roosters – the media coverage they have received on the back SBW has been awesome. The club’s major sponsors must be in seventh heaven.

The hype has been anything but false. SBW has been making gradual improvements to his game every week and it wouldn’t surprise me if he starts regularly winning man of the match awards, from tonight.

There’s no doubt he is a very special athlete. And worth every cent the Roosters shelled out.

If you’re out at this game and you see the Wiz, come and say hello.

And have a great weekend.

I agree with the WIZ! point 1. Take the tap where the penalty was awarded if the penalty is awarded in the attacking 20 metre zone. If it is within the attacking 10meter zone than move back to the 10 metre line before taking the tap- ----gee thats simple! point 2. If a team kicks the ball dead from outside the attacking 50m than the opposition gets the ball back on the halfway line.- that'll stop em! point 3. 6 reserves and once a player is replaced they cannot return to the feild. also- Tries scored from kicks should be 3 points with no conversion allowed- hence rewarding ball movement through the hands. Get rid of the srums! Get rid of Golden point! Bring back the Shoulder Charge! And yes SBW is just something else- keep up the good work WIZ!!

Why do the refs have to teach players how to pack into the scrum. Its embarrassing! Also in recent games I have seen the fullback, half and "hooker" all pack in as lock. Another thing, why does the predictable scrum winner a go the blind most of the time. Whats wrong with running the ball from the backline where the speedsters are - scrums are a gift of possession. Make use of it!

t The new ruck rules have reopened my old offensive strategist ( ROY MASTERS NARRATTED) ulter ego's, I love the drawing board and the new rules have opened massive oppurtunities in attack that arent being takin advantage of yet, YET.

Whiz, just sit back and enjoy the game. Let us not change the game because a kick goes long or a player drops the ball. Let us leave the game as it is, they have fixed, well Dainel Anderson has fixed all the grey areas, most are black and white. So what if a bit of grey creaps in, nothing is perfect, you can tinker for life, it will never be perfect. I like the game now, i have no issues with kicking dead, dont kick it dead. The Souths halfback has not kicked a ball dead all year, and they are on top. Let us reward teams for not kicking dead, not change the rules to suit them or teach them not to kick dead. It is called pressure, dont kick it dead, pressure the opposition team to run it out from their own goal. I dont even know why any team would think kicking dead is the best option. Do a survey on the stats of kicking it dead. But dont try to change rules because a couple of balls have gome dead. Geez. Every time you change a rule, teams and coaches will come up with ideas to create oppotunities to get around the new rules. We will be chasing our tails forever if we try to make the game prefect. The game is fantastic now. Let us sit back and watch this magnificent Beast for a few good years. Can we at least feel the wind in our hair before the old girl needs a overhaul. cheers.

See you and Whiz are tinkering again. Look, how many times do i have to say, every action has a reaction So we get rid of the big men, and bring in the supreme athlete, the Greg Inglis in the front row who can go 80 minutes without a break, . So then we get 80 minutes of super fast boring play, next you know whiz is calling for slower play the balls so the big men can come back into the game. Mate, let's stop tinkering with the game. I said it is perfect, leave it the way it is, i seen 40 minutes of perfect footy the other night, Storm Tigers, then the team who did not fitigue ran away with the game. What are we trying to do once all teams catch up to the storm, change the whole fabric of the game because the storm are winning now. ? The Storm will lose Slater Cronk and Smith in a few years, they will be burnt out. When the Storm are stuffed with only 2 thousand crowds, what do we do then, give them concentives, a extra tackle each set of six. This code has got to stop worrying about interchange and player talent. The Broncos lost Lockyer, the Broncos fans have got to get used to life without Lockyer, not change the rules to suit our team. Can't i just sit here and enjoy the game the way it is, i said it was perfect last year, it has got better again this year, so why are we even talking about this, leave the game alone, it is a perfect Tv game, maybe we should be talking about Sydney crowds, that is the problem, not the interchange. They all want to stay at home and watch the game on TV, cant blame them, it is a wonderful product, best in the world.

Most of the issues you mention are a result of the 10 metre rule. Go back to 5 metres and you can have quick play the balls without the dummy half running as much because the defence is already set. I would also change the interchange rule to a replacement rule. Have 4 or 5 replacements on the bench. Once a player comes off ( except for blood bin ) they can't return to the game unless the game goes to extra time.

Branko Right on - get them to stay 10 metres back, that is never enforced. The second rower in the backline is OK so long as they have 6 in the scrum - cant legislate against negative play unless you get them back 10 metres...

Get all the forwards packing into the scrum please. I hate seeing second rowers standing in the backline in defence, or hitting it one-up once the ball comes out. The '90s saw some wonderful, sweeping backline movements from scrums - maybe following these rules might see a revival.

Definitely agree and i do think six is too extreme but it helps make the point. As a young one i don't remember too much of the intricacies of 90's league, But for me i think if rule changes commonly saw most benches holding two mobile/impact forwards, and two impact utilities, The game would have a good mix. As for repeated dummy halve running, "Finals Footy" as G Gould calls it, for me it is the best style of game as it brings about two things. - A desperation that just cant be attained through typical prop-for-prop swap every 18 minutes - Could help reduce interference/wrestling due to go forward and one-on-one plays As for this to all work, we would need the coaches mentality to be "work, work, work" not "swap swap swap"

Cant disagree with any of these three common sense ideas Wizz. My advice however would be to not be so safe with all your comments cause you tend to be boring.

The impact on tactics rather than player endurance is the key point elGusto. I think we'll go like we did in the mid 90s with dummy half running for five tackles because the big, tiring forwards are slow getting up and into position. Likewise speeding up the play the ball too much - remember the early 00s where there were attacking players diving at the feet of defenders so they could bounce up and get a quick play the ball. Rule changes need to be done incrementally to gauge the effects rather than going from 10 interchange straight to four or wrestling in the ruck to no contest.

The real question is, how do the tactics change if say interchange dropped to six per game. Does the bench get stacked with 2nd rowers, or more utility players? I for one think that not only would it benefit players like sandow, segearyo (sp?) and sam williams, but forwards like Joel thompson/Greg bird/Hoffman would excel even more in the middle of the park. And on the other hand, does this lead to more teams kicking the ball dead (one improvement making a negative worse?) Anything to get the speed up, and change the dynamics, will lead to more creativity and points.

And then they give away a penalty, we take three points and it starts all over again? No thanks

Contestable play-the-balls were an eyesore and ugly. This is why they made PTBs a simple affair.

The answer is simple, get rid of the 5 tackles, then make the ball contestable in the tackle itself. The offense and defense of the tackle itself will draw p.ayers and make plenty of room for clever backs to run... And then...
