John Singleton acrimoniously cuts ties with Waterhouse

By Alfred Chan / Expert

The final day of the Sydney racing carnival with four Group 1 races was overshadowed by an explosive interview with John Singleton where he declared the end of Australian racing’s most high profile relationships.

Singleton, one of Australia’s leading horse owners has been a mammoth player in Australian racing for over two decades.

The interview panned out live on Channel 7 after Singleton’s best horse, More Joyous, was comfortably beaten in the All Aged Stakes.

Singleton and Waterhouse have shared an owner-trainer relationship unrivalled by any in Australian racing which has repeatedly delivered Group 1 success.

After the race however, Singleton was livid when asked to comment about the future of his six year old mare who has won over $4.5million in prize money.

“She won’t be running again with Gai Waterhouse as trainer,” Singleton said.

Singleton issued concerns about information he had acquired from Waterhouse’s bookmaker son, Tom.

“When Gai’s son knows last night what the result will be today, there’s a conflict of interest.”

“I told her last night if she doesn’t win, she’ll be leaving.”

“I heard from her son that she’s got problems I don’t know about.”

“All my horses are leaving Gai’s tomorrow.”

Tom Waterhouse was given an opportunity to respond.

“I never said the horse had problems – I never knew the horse had problems,” Tom Waterhouse said.

“He says that kind of stuff to cause a bit of controversy.”

“They always kiss and make up so hopefully they will tomorrow.”

The Singleton-Waterhouse relationship appears irreparable after the two were seen in a heated argument after the race.

Singleton is Waterhouse’s largest client and the fallout will have commercial implications to both the Waterhouse stable and Tom’s bookmaking company.

Asked if he had a new trainer in mind for his horses, Singleton remained tight lipped. Given an opportunity to rethink his thoughts, Singleton confirmed his decision twenty minutes after he made his initial comments which he made immediately after the All Aged Stakes.

It is the end of one of the most high-profile relationships within the Australian racing industry and many trainers will be putting their hands up to train Singleton’s talented horses.

The fallout at the end of the day overshadowed what had been an excellent day of racing.

French import Reliable Man won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes beating hot favourite It’s A Dundeel. After the race, Reliable Man then pulled up lame and was later diagnosed with a sprained off-fore.

Trainer Chris Waller was unable to speculate on the future of the import that was having just his second run in Australia but flagged immediate retirement a possibility for the stallion.

Peter Snowden trained Guelph claimed back to back Group 1 victories by winning the Champagne Stakes while Lloyd Williams owned Mourayan won the Sydney Cup after running seventh in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

In the final Group 1 of the day, All Too Hard made it three wins in a row by winning the All Aged Stakes.

It was confirmed after the race that All Too Hard would now prepare for the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in England before retiring to stud.

How is it ? Gai walks in to the hearing with Mr Wankenov QC, trying to generalize the whole thing. Are the stewards biased? I think that the nature of being a steward is specific, and not biased, or else everything a steward does is biased. They are 'hands-on' and have an inquiry process. It refined, already. A judge does not put the whole legal system to jeopardy for the sake of a case. Mr Wankenov QC should not put horse racing in to jeopardy. Synergy DOES exist in racing. Succor is one of the heights of having stewards. The courts don't take backward steps once down a specific path. I've seen idiots every day of my life. Their simple minds will usually 'broaden the narrow" or "narrow the broad" Just accept the hearing, Gai. It's the right place to deal with horse racing issues. Don't be with the quality of twitter.

You want to tell me again how great Sportsbet are? You obviously don't bet with them. Or perhaps you are a losing customer and one of the few people that they let bet more than $50 Punter takes action against bookie's ban Aussie punter Robert MacMillan has filed a civil dispute with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) claiming that online bookie Sportsbet placed restrictions on the bet types they would accept from him. McMillan is alleging the restrictions are in breach of the Australian Consumer Law and has asked for $35,000 in damages plus orders requesting the corporate bookmaker to amend their advertising. The punters claims he won $22,500 between December of last year and January this year before having his account restricted by Sportsbet, where he couldn’t place bets in the vicinity of $10 - $30. Sportsbet replied to the McMillan’s dispute saying that according to the terms, they were entitled to cancel, change or restrict the bet types as well as to decline or limit any wager a player may wish to place. McMillan took the matter further lodging the complaint with the VCAT. Sportsbet attempted to have the proceedings halted but the VCAT dismissed the request ordering the Northern Territory-based bookie to file a reply by May 31 stating whether they had declined or limit any wager McMillan tried to place.

I'm just glad that Gai's real thoughts about those involved in the racing industry have come to light. She has shown nothing but utter contempt for owners and jockeys alike. Imagine how she feels about the punter who is the very lifeblood of the industry. She has nothing but disdain for the rest of the industry. Jockeys and punters are below her. This, from a woman who is married to a convicted race fixer. Perhaps now some of you mugs willknow how the first Lady of racing really thinks about the very gambling public that funds the racing industry

Are you questioning Gai's integrity yet? She treated a horse with two different substances and didn't think she needed to tell the owner. if she didn't think the owner needed to know imagine what she thinks of the punter. Now combine that with her description of Robbo the former jockey. She has nothing but disdain for the rest of the industry. Jockeys and punters are below her. This, from a woman who is married to a convicted race fixer. perhaps now some of you mugs willknow how the first Lady of racing really thinks about the very gambling public that funds the racing industry.

My greatest concern about all of this, and it has not been discussed, is the fact that when Singo said he was going to have a $100,000 bet on the horse on the day of the race he was told to 'just enjoy the races', in other words don't. That came from stable staff so if it wasn't considered good enough for Singo to have a punt on then why should the normal punter be kept in the dark and go blow their money on a horse that the connections knew was not in a state to give them a fair go for their money. That is what really sticks in my craw and is the worst aspect of the whole affair. Johns proved that there isn't much between the ears and Robbo, what can you say??? Explanation someone!!!

Singo should have taken More Joyous off Gai after the Cox Plate debacle.

Tom was full of lies on his TV interview. The voice, the eyes !!!!!!! (text book lies) Just because he can rattle on about being a bookmaker like a 'Do Bee' does not make him come across as sincere.

Syd seems to respond to everything ! I posted a comment months ago about Gai Waterhouse and the obvious "conflict of interest ' that the family connection creates. Pittsburg Phil ( greatest handicapper in history) said that corruption in horse racing " Just adds another element of uncertainty to an UNCERTAIN game at best " Gai Waterhouse trained horses can WIN with ZERO form OR run 35 lengths last with impeccable form . I simply do not bet on ANY race with a Waterhouse runner in the field .Saves me a lot of money and heartache.

Syd FYI, Sportsbet are a $2.5billion operation who made over $100m profit last year while TomWaterhouse.com lost $10m. Your definition of "fluff and no substance" is way off the mark.

"Owner onus owns no remorse." I don't know what this means but I thought it sounded funny (peculiar) and I see a chance of making up a saying. Seriously, I am all for busting up the cheating bookmakers, jockeys and trainers, but I don't think that it exclusively takes a family to slow horses. The main players of the industry know each other much better than they demonstrate on a race day. Owner is King. (and they want more than prostitution or entertainment of the social event) Punter and sponsor can be King too. Everyone else earns money.

No probs GM. Any semi-serious punter has seen this 3way Waterhouse insider trading as a massive conflict of interest for over a decade, and well before li'l Tommy starting showing up in every ad break. This would be a very funny story if it wasn't for the fact that the only people who have burned and will continue to get burned by of all this are the punters. The stewards will do nothing about this ridiculously massive conflict of interest and Gai, Robbie and li'l Tommy and it will be business as usual even though this is a highly toxic situation. There is no doubt in my mind that Robbie and Tommy have made millions laying Gai's horses over the past decade. It would be incredibly naive and stupid of anyone to think that those two have not benefited greatly from inside knowledge from the stable. It's only natural for family to want to help family. It's a shame that the only ones who didn't recognise this were those in charge and those able to make sure that this never happened. I can't see Singo having made this up because it is a well known fact that the Waterhouse's are one of the most litigious families in Australia, let alone the racing business. They love a law suit or the very threat of one and they would slap Singo with half a dozen lawsuits before he ordered his next beer. I just find it funny that Singo vouched for Gai and never had a problem with this obvious conflict of interest until it affected him for a third time. Perhaps he hates seeing li'l Tommy's cheesy grin on TV every 15 minutes as much as most of the population.

Just trying to be funny - actually read all comments here and notice a mixture of good fact and elements of good fiction. It struck me that the only people able to dismiss the possibility that Singo actually made up the story and therefore know what happened are the mystery friends. Seems you two fit that bill of seeming to know what happened very well. Not funny?

@Maxwell. I'm sorry that you're feeling intimidated because people are talking about things that are way over your head and actually have an idea about the subject at hand. Where as you heard the word " horsie " or " Gai " and felt compelled to comment even though you are clueless to the racing or gambling industry. There are some nice pictures of horsies and a cycling section on this site if that's more your speed.

I agree Scott. The stewards really are clueless to exchange betting let alone offshore betting and won't be able to do a thing. Robbie has been around for far too long and is old school and definitely not stupid. Li'l Tommy on the other hand isn't the sharpest knife in the draw. He got given a giant leg up but I will admit it seems like he works hard, or perhaps his form students work hard. It's obvious that he knows nothing about rugby league as he just regurgitates stats. I too was disappointed but not surprised with Sundays post race shows and their tossing softball questions at Tommy boy. He is paying channel 9 a fortune in advertising so they were always going to go soft on him. As for TVN, they could have had a good crack at him but I guess Richard Callender was worried about missing out on interviews with Gai pre and post race. I found it interesting that on TVN initially categorically denied speaking to or seeing Andrew Johns on Friday then at the end of the interview he said that he may have seen him on Friday. Again, nothing will come of this as the players are too integral to the industry. The stewards allowed this mess and theyll do nothing that makes them look stupid.

I agree with you Justin, I have followed Gai's horses most of my life and before this her father the late Tommy Smith (Tulloch fan) Apparently More Joyous should have not run in this race, what a beautiful mare, she was given Triprim Antibiotic for her neck problem and the side-effect was Lethargic systems it also effects the blood, she may have been in season? According to Nash Rawiller she didn't respond when he asked her, I am sure he would know how she felt after all he is the Jockey and knows her so well. I hope that the lovely mare has a good rest she deserves it, I am so glad she is away from the mad house.

The need for vets to call themselves 'Doctor' is for them to explain. A BVSc does not in itself provide the wherewithal. Some people earn their doctorates, unlike frauds who claim titles by default. I watched More Joyous run 2nd last. She was listless at best. She ran a shocker. She should never have started.

Syd Forget about betfair, its yesterdays news. It is easy to back or lay horses to win or lose "millions" off shore. Any professional punter or bookie would now this. It is unregulated and no one knows whats happened. I am not suggesting that happened with MJ but I am suggesting that would have been the best avenue and sadly our stewards cannot trace any bets. Syd, I have only met Robbie once and I can assure you he is NOT stupid. i do not know Tom but he has been handed a silver spoon and the interviews he did on 9 and TVN on Sunday suggested he is no rocket scientist. I was disappointed in both TVN and Channel 9 with the soft questions, but I guess he does give them a heap of cash.
