Wanderers release four A-League players

By News / Wire

Western Sydney Wanderers have released three players from their losing grand final side as they look ahead to next season’s A-League and Asian Champions League campaigns.

Coach Tony Popovic has repeatedly stressed the Wanderers need to continue to improve next season.

The former Socceroo showed on Tuesday he would not shy away from making the tough decisions in cutting four players who featured in the club’s stunning 2012/13 debut A-League campaign.

Forward Dino Kresinger, defender Tarek Elrich and midfielder Rocky Visconte, who all played in the Wanderers’ 2-0 grand final loss to Central Coast earlier this month have been released alongside forward Joey Gibbs.

Wanderers chief executive Lyall Gorman thanked the players for their contribution to the club’s first season.

“The inaugural season for the Western Sydney Wanderers has been an amazing journey for the players, coaching staff, club, partners and fans. Dino, Tarek, Joey and Rocky were all part of this journey and all played an integral part in the success of the club and winning the Premiers Plate in this historic season,” Gorman said in a statement on Tuesday.

“It’s unfortunate that we are unable to retain all of the squad.

“The Wanderers’ door will always be open to Dino, Tarek, Rocky and Joey and no one should ever underestimate their contribution to this, our foundation season. We wish them well in their future football endeavours.”

Kresinger, who developed a cult following at the fledgling club and scored in the Wanderers’ 2-0 semi-final win over defending champions Brisbane Roar, played 25 of the Wanderers’ 29 games and scored two goals.

Local junior Elrich played in 11 games, starting in two, while Visconte featured in three games and scored one goal.

Gibbs played 13 games and scored two goals.

Kresinger is a strange release but with the success they had under Popovic it would be wrong to doubt him

perhaps some of the fee received for halloran, if he goes, can be used for lustica, if that eventuates.

I'd love Lustica to stay. I can't see Brisbane paying Lustica's club a fee. Meaning the parent club will need to tear up his contract. I'd love Halloran to be sold. Saw $400,000 batted around? Seems well over the odds I'd think.

No idea who the replacements are which for me at least is worrying. I would hate to think we would get worse players than the ones we let go. I read somewhere that we were in the market for Jurman. I would not have been happy with that signing at all. I wait with baited breath who he has got lined up especially for the defender positions.

no worries. didn't think you'd made an error. but its interesting that nijland was mentioned but not lustica. just thought i'd share some more unsubstantiated rumours.

Sorry Ian, I honestly meant Nijland. Thank you for pointing that out.

The Roar's release you would have seen said Nijland was not part of next season's plans even though he was only on loan. But did not reference Lustica who is also on loan. Hard to say really a club is letting go of a player who is on loan. And another unsubstantiated rumour is Lustica asked to be released from his club to join Roar. Halloran isn't a 'let go' though. if he leaves its a transfer mid contract and that brings in caSh which can be put to good use. Jurman and Meyer are let gos. Massimo will be if its true. he hadn't got much game time recently.Foundation player for the Roar.

Not one of the comments so far have made the most important connection to Wanderers actions in releasing 4 players. Popovic is no fool and, not like others that could be named, he is simply doing a good managers job and is making room for players he thinks will improve his squad. That is good management and it will be interesting to see how Wanderers will go next season if he happens to bring in 4 "better" players than he has released. To the other contributors, think before you reply, if you feel so inclined. jb

Are you being serious :) Most clubs release about 4-6 players at the end of every season. Probably a couple more will go or leave before the pre-season starts. As a Wanderers fan if I had to choose 4 that had to go, they would be just about my choices. Dino was a bit of a character and scored a couple of goals, but he's not really the striker to fit in with Poppa's style of play. There's a rumour in the fan forums that one of the new potential owners have plenty of money and will sign a big name striker.

Kressinger and Visconte are not a surprise . I hope those players can acquire new clubs as soon as possible. They've all experienced an element to pro football that rarely happens club harmony, unity, togetherness, historic, ,it rarely happens in club football there's generally angst and procrastination within the club and its supporters.

i didn't think there was too much whinging from any fans on this forum. its also fair that its back to level pegging.perhaps that one player was the sole difference in WSW winning the premiers. ;-) . i think Ono would be a better offload, free up more space for WSW, and would look good in orange and black working in tandem, on other sides of the field, with a German.

Dino was always odds on to be released. There's no doubt he was a fans' favourite and some of his defending from the front put opposition defences under all sorts of pressure. He's the sort of players that fans of the club he plays for love, because he puts in 100% every week. But in saying that it was the right decision to release him. Luckily this season Ono and Bridge chipped with almost 20 goals between them, while Haliti got a handful as well. But WSW can't rely on that again and need a striker who can hold the ball up and also score goals. Releasing Dino also means WSW now have the same number of Visa players as other clubs can have, so hopefully that will stop some of the whinging from opposing teams (despite all 9 clubs agreeing to the concession).

well they needed to get rid of a foreign player, now that next year wont be their inaugral season. Maybe they can come to Jets, we need some decent talent.

The Wanderers need to address the lack of strikepower up front if they want to even repeat the performance next year let alone "go one better". Instead of going for more imports, which I don't think they will do anyway as they were gifted so many allowances by the other clubs, I would hope that they acquire a couple of decent strikers ( McBreen and Brockie up front => drooling at the prospect !!!!) or bring promising young talent through for a "go" at the front.

Dont care of the opinions of Syd Fc fans Dave. as for diving and cheating well Del piero attempted a few dives and got yellow carded for it, but ohwell lets turn a blind eye on that one cos its Del piero.

As a SFC fan I'm glad to see Kresinger dumped. One of the most diving, cheating players we've seen in the league. Like an extremely crap Drogba. *lights fuse and quickly leaves the room*

We all had our soft spot for Dino. Our first cult "hero", wasnt the most talented of strikers, but the big fella had plenty of heart and always gave 100%. Loved how we turned from booing him to cheering for him. A much better way to support players. One last fist pump for Dinooooooooo. :)
