Cronulla combination the key for Blues halves

By William McInnes / Roar Pro

A passionate Blues supporter, I am so disheartened to see the lads going out and losing game after game. Although in recent years they have been better, the need for consistent playing is still yet to be fulfilled.

The unquestionable reason for all these defeats has been an inconsistency with team selection.

From 2008 until now, the Maroons have changed only a few minor players, while the Blues squad has been an unrecognisable train wreck of chopping and changing.

We have quality, there is no doubt of it. But the team has been under-coached, over-selected and everything in between.

With the Maroons’ best players losing quality slowly, it’s the Blues’ time to pounce.

Brett Stewart is not the player he once was and playing him at fullback is simply leaving us vulnerable. Jarryd Hayne is the obvious replacement and he has the speed and strength to play well as fullback.

On the wings, Brett Morris and Akuila Uate are the obvious selections for me. Uate has proven himself to be a brilliant try scorer, he’s speedy winger and has great strength.

Brett playing alongside his brother is a deadly combination. So naturally, Josh Morris would be in my lineup. Michael Jennings too is a proven performer for the Blues and makes them a far stronger team.

The halves. Ready for the bombshell? I would choose Todd Carney playing alongside… Albert Kelly.

Yes, it is a strange choice but the former Cronulla half has proven himself this for the Titans season and for me has been the third best halfback in the NRL season behind Cooper Cronk and Shaun Johnson.

The second row? Greg Bird and Luke Lewis are both great performers at Origin level and they are both safe players. Bird, despite his recent haircut, has been putting in some impressive performances.

I would try Tony Williams in the second row and if it didn’t work out, move him to the bench, but I believe he would play there well.

Front row would be Paul Gallen, James Tamou and Robbie Farah. Simple. Farah, an incredible player. Gallen, is a superhero at Origin level. Tamou adds a bit of youth and energy to the mix.

Looking to the bench, Trent Merrin, Beau Scott, Ben Creagh and Tariq Sims would all be players I believe can come off the bench well.

That’s my squad, what do Roarers think and who would you put in your squad?

Don't agree wih a couple of those selections but as a Qld fan I will help you guys out a little bit; 1. Jarryd Hayne- has to be there and with Stewart injured he is the next best option. 1 out of 5 fifth tackle options. 2. Blake Ferguson- youth, strength & speed. Simple. 3. Josh Morris- only man that will sadly contain Inglis 4. Michael Jennings- his form for the Roosters and his speed makes him the first centre picked 5. Michael Gordon/Aqulia Uate- both handy players, both string runners and both score try's 6. James Maloney- 1 out of 5 fifth tackle options. 7. Mitchell Peirce- Maloney and Peirce together would be a good combination cause they play at Roosters and know each others game. 1/5 fifth tackle options. 8. Aaron Woods- needs a Blues jersey, needed one foetal season now. 9. Robbins Farah- Who else????:) 1/5 fifth tackle options. 10. James Tamou- in form & wrecked Qld last year, strong runner and quick play the ball 11. Greg Bird- in great form and he is regular. Lifts for Origin 12. Paul Gallen- captain of this team 13. John Sutton- he is a forward who has ball skills. He is in the form of his life and he breaks into this team. Beats out Ryan Hoffman for a place in the side. 1/5 fifth tackle options INTERCHANGE 14. Kurt Gidley- NSW needs Kurt, he is Aus' best utility. Can play anywhere. Another fifth tackle option. 15. Trent Merrin- can play prop or lock or second row. In good form. 16. Anthony Watmough 17. Luke Lewis- when Watmough and Lewis come off the bench, that is when I feel NSW is going to win the game. These two put others through holes, they run through holes themselves they scare Qld fans. 18. Albert Kelly 19. Luke Douglas 20. Glenn Stewart

Nsw has an opertunity to have finally have a bench filled with massive guys ( Trex idris Mateo sims mason Tamou grant). Much like Queensland does (shillington and Taylor) we shoul take the chance with 2 arms

Holy Crap Batman- we are starting to agree?? For sure stick with the 1,6.7 and 9 a much as possible.. I hope Stewart will fit, he is a tough hombre who if at even 85% is worth the bench spot. sleep easy and peace out

sorry dude, i was refferring to Merrit as an 80kg winger not Uate. (Boyd weighs over 90kgs, so what's your point??) And don't you think if I was a Rabbits fan I would support Merrrit as an inclusion?? Yeah I pick Sutton at 6, the only difference between him and say Carney/Maloney is that he likes to mix it up with the big collisions in the middle 3rd and he plays his best attacking footy in the opposition's 20-- nice and close. This suits SOO against the current QLD team. Carney and Maloney put on their best plays from 30- 40 metres out and NSW need to get closer than this and earn repeat sets before they can expect to cross the chalk. Sutton for sure....

Now at least you are making sense. Agree Ferguson is a great option as is Woods. Don't think Stewart will be match fit by origin. Also would give the whole back 7 speech of step up or time is up. Even though we would be only falling back into Bellamy days I we keep chopping and changing. 1,6,7,9 must get the opportunity to play all 3 this year. For mine, new coach must give these guys every chance of performing then make changes where he see necessary, not what anyone else thinks or has assumed

Now that Morris and Stewart are out, we should be looking at Blake Fergusan on the Wing and It would be nice if DUGAN could start firing with the Dragons. If all else fails put Hayne at the back, but if I was the coach, I would be telling Hayne and Jennings to step up or kiss SOO goodbye bye.. they have to lose their tendency to have he 'odd' quite game whilst playing for their state. Other changes to my team posted 8 days a go is that I would bring Aaron Woods onto the bench in place of Ryan James and switch G Stewart in for T Sims. Reason being is that we will need offloads and ball movement from our bech players

No maybe your right the fact that QLD have such large wingers like Boyd may have been the difference the past 7 years. Really? You pick sutton at 6??? There is our lifesaver right there.....You must watch gymnastics in your qld room. Morris is injured, or would have been my pick over Merritt. Ps if Uate is 80kg I must be 40kg. I can't believe I'm bothering replying to you and your just pointless comments. Lastly, this is my opinion, Deal with it or boot off back to your rabbit Warren. Sutton....really???

omg.............. NSW won't pick 80kg wingers! Don't you remember what Tallis did to Hogson?? Small wingers are not origin wingers, plain and simple. But why am I even responding to your post anyway TJ?? your bench has Kidley and Innes on it so you must be a cricket fan. You obviously dont follow Rugby League with comments like that.

Adding mason and Trex to bench is good idea, beefen up the pack so to speak. Matteo could be a good option but not sure who I would leave out. Drop Innes for Mason and Trex for sims and could be just about ideal - love ya work mate

Sadly we don't have brett Stewart for game 1 but the backline you chose is big, fast, black in skin colour and absolute wreckers nice chose I say. For game 2 put stewart to fullback and idris to the bench and Hayne to centre. Also throw mason and grant and Trex and Mateo into the team.

This is in my opinion the side that will game one 1. Hayne - and leave him there for the next 5 years 2. Uate - hopefully learned from his mistakes and perform the way we all know he can 3. Jennings - form, pace and been there before. Like uate, expectation is high 4. Idris - big fast strong - an take pressure off forwards if necessary - defense questionable 5. Merrit - regardless of history - Form should see him there. Natural born try scorer 6. Carney - I have no idea why anyone us questioning his position - best we have, daylight 2nd. Been there before 7. Pierce - automatic pick or not, also best we have by distance also been there before 8. tamou - brilliant prop 9. Farrah - part of the 1,6,7,9 combo that should not be changed unless injury hits 10. Gallen - 1st picked in my opinion 11. Lewis - wonderful back rower or utility 12. Watmough - fast agile impact player 13. Bird - 2nd pick 14. Hoffman 15. Gidley 16. Sims 17. Innes Good balance but maybe a bit light up front on bench but can shuffle back row to cover - I'd love to see this team game one and let's go from there - on our day, I honestly believe this is the team to stop the rot!

1. Brett, Stewart 2. Nathan, Merritt 3. Michael, Jennings 4. Josh, Morris 5. Brett, Morris 6. James, Maloney 7. Mitchell, Pierce (Adam Reynolds) 8. Tim, Grant 9. Robbie, Farrah 10. James, Tamou 11. Paul, Gallon 12. Ryan, Hoffman 13. Greg, Bird 14. Luke, Lewis 15. Anthony, Watmough 16. Aaron, Woods 17. Willie, Maison I believe that Reynolds is ready as he shows all the signs of a matured and SOO worthy halfback, also Maloney has shown great from and has a destructive running game, as he takes on the line, which most halfbacks don’t do these day. I believe Maloney and Farrah would complement each other with the styles of playing and that Reynolds would be able to set up B. Stewart giving either Jennings or Merritt the opportunity to finish the play and make their way over the line to score points.

Queensland have chosen the same players year in year out not because their selectors are brilliant mins, but because they don't need to choose anyone else. Unfortunately for us New South Welshman, we're playing a team littered with future immortals/legends of the game, and we don't have the luxury to select the same players each year. Of course I have my mock Origin tem that I'd like to see play the cane toads later in the year, but it's unfair to attribute the seven series losses in a row to inconsistent selection, because it'd be foolish to keep selecting the same under-performing players each (bar Mitchell Pearce).

You are so right on brett Stewart. He is the best fullback in the nrl by defense and support play and shear luck......he pulls magic out of a hat with his passing and even his kick as of recent. He is a great defender at the back.

Great apart from Watmough... He really just makes too many crucial mistakes. I don't ever feel safe when he has the ball.
